anyone know if new 1st gear set can be made?
Flowmastered87GL replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Off Road
I dont know the answer to the impreza re-gearing, but the tercel toaster / ATM wagons actually had a 6 speed tranny. It was a 5 speed until you put it in 4WD, then you could access the EL gear (extra low) It was up and to the left (next to first) I think some older civic wagovans had the same thing. -
My wagon almost burnt up yesterday

safe temp ranges?/ cooling issue

I would tend to agree here. My 87 turbowagon did the same thing... ran great around town but as soon as you got up to 55 it started to cook (it was further along the radiator failure process that you sound to be) -

Talked to Jason about it.... maybe I described it bad, or maybe he is right... We established the car MAY just be pinging really bad. Basically it sounds like the rattle when you try and start ind 2nd or 3rd gear or go up a hill in the wrong gear.... it just does it easier than before. The smoke from before really doesnt seem to be there, it was just brief when I heard the pop that one time. I still think the car is on its way out and I still plan to part it out, but the engine may be fine and just need a good cleaning. -
Wow, with prices like that how you could you pass em up! Uhhhh 6 lug 14" rims I think came on alot of 2WD nissans in the 80's and early 90's The rims may be rather narrow compared to 4WD rims (like 5.5 or 6 instead of 7inches wide)

Richie has 2 lifts.... After removing the suspension you lift the bare carcass with the lift by the side window holes (by the roof) Then roll a trailer under it and take it off to the subie graveyard -

Sunday that I dont work? Good luck (my new days off are Monday and Tuesday generally) Saturday and Sunday are the 2 best days for selling cars. Though I may be able to get away with working Monday instead of Sunday if no one else in the store is getting the day off and the weather is scheduled to be kinda nasty. (either rainy or really hot, both kill car sales) I located a baja through Gresham Nissan Subaru. They can get it to me under invoice if I outsource financing. If I do in house SOA financing I forfeit the rebate, but can get a killer APR. Payments differ only be like $9 depending on which way I go. So it all depends on what my banks say. I may have it by Sunday -

I do have a rebuilt engine. At 215K the engine blew up, bad compression in #2, swapped in a JDM engine. A little over a year ago it blew a head gasket so I yanked it and resealed it. Now around 30K later its going bad internally. Delivering pizza is VERY hard on a car. Craig, Shannon said you came by today, sorry I missed you, but I work everyday up until a week from Monday (so I have like 8 more days of work before I finally get a weekend) The good news is I work with a girl who knows people inside Gresham Subaru... so I put in an offer for $500 under invoice for a Baja sport -
Boycott Shucks/CSK AUTO
Flowmastered87GL replied to xoomer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ya Ive learned to get little sale things here and there, but basically, they have the WORST prices, autozone seems to have the best. $2.19 for oil at schucks... low price guarantee my ____ well you know... Get the same stuff for like $1.69 at autozone! No coupon needed or anything! -
Well the GL is starting to show its age... today coming home from work, taking off from the 2nd stop light I stopped at the car felt kind of sluggish, I gave it a little more gas <pop> <rattle> <rattle> Uh oh, I think something in the engine let go. Now the car rattles under load, seems to lightly smoke sometimes. It goes 55 still, maybe more, I didnt want to push it (plus my commute only involves like 1/2 mile at most on the freeway) I think I am getting a Baja sooner than I planned. I think at this point I am parting out the car. Its worth WAY more in pieces than as a hole... even if I have to pay someone to help me part it out.

wheel bearing eatin' sube
Flowmastered87GL replied to mitch184's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On the front assy there is: The hub, then the conical washer (grease it), then a flat washer then the nut. the flat washer actually has a little concavity to it. Or convexity depending on how you see it. Basically you want it to look like this: HUB <Conical washer> )) <-- washer, [nut] Make sense? The )) shows you that you want the flat washer to dome out in the middle, so the edges touch everything, and the middle does too AFTER you tighten on the nut. Helps to keep everything snug. -

idiot lights come on half way?
Flowmastered87GL replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my ugly green lifted brat did this. alternator was bad, leading to battery failure. Replaced both and fixed it. I touched up the grounds too as afew were loose. it still made it all the way from the Oregon coast to Portland with no issues though! Just the annoying lightly glowing lights. -

Subaru capital of the US?
Flowmastered87GL replied to markjs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hood River Oregon (its by where WCSS6 was) = something like 4 Subarus out of every 10 cars sold... funny cause the nearest Suby dealer is either Gresham OR or The Dalles OR. -
Remember where I live? I can leave a little tub of CV parts in front of my garage door if you want. There are some new nuts, washers, etc. PLEASE bring em back when you are done though... I hear those conical washers are $7 each new! (and I may need em in afew more thousand miles) My address is 4811, you should know the street

Dishonest Mechanic?
Flowmastered87GL replied to Zarkoff500's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am a fan of the book rate personally. You are always able to ask what the hourly rate is and how many hours are billed for a service. Think of it this way.... an axle job bills, say 1 hour. What if it takes 2 hours because its rusty or something is a pain to work on. Alot of honest mechanics (like Richie) would probably just eat the hour and finish the job right. Other times maybe it would take 45 minutes... basically it averages out. I do MOST of my own work so its all billed as my own time.... FREE -
I'm wondering that too... as I intend to TRY to drive up after work tomorrow and chill for an hour or 2 then come home. I am going to shoot for 5-6 PM off time + drive time but... today I was supposed to get out at 7 and I sold a car and instead left at 9:45. So I agree that it would be nice to know about nightime entrance... also how hard might it be to see y'all from the highway.

Short Throw 87 GL-10
Flowmastered87GL replied to NuclearBacon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have seen parts from an XT6 modified to make a short throw... worked really well but looked kinda funky as the shifter was slightly relocated. My short shifter keeps the same degree of movement, but I just chopped 2 inches off the rod up top and put on a leather knob. Shortens the radius of where your hand has to move... though it still moves the same # of degrees.
