can an ea82 handle hydrogen power
Flowmastered87GL replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I say try it! The only way to see if they really CAN handle it is for some pioneer to try it. Who knows... you may stumble on to something! -
Yes.... but I didnt actually try it that way with starting up and running the car... just with a breaker bar on the tranny. It moved with a breaker bar. Funny thing is when I reseated the release fork and bearing the breaker bar made the car move again. then when I started it, it didnt move. Thats when I yanked the clutch and saw some wear on the outer edges... therefore a concave flywheel it looked like, so I had it machined on the inside and out. I probably should have measured it, but bolting it on to the engine it all felt really nice. I saw the splines on the pressure plate move in as I bolted it to the flywheel.

Cant be a pimp-brat without the red velour GL-10 interior

I've done all the work at my place... so any abuse has been done by me... I have had easy times yanking the engine sometimes and hard times others. I have always done the clutch work from the engine side as I have a nice hoist and a so-so jack... easier to unhook the engine in 45 minutes than wrestle a tranny for afew hours. I suppose its possible that the input shaft has slid forward with the engine one time... Isnt there like an E-clip or something inside to keep it in there though? I know I have had an automatic tranny (a 3AT) shaft slide out, but NEVER a manual one... Anyone else? Think one of the times when I had to pry the bell housing apart that the clutch splines yanked the input shaft forward or something? On another note, I will be discussing the matter with Jerry on Sunday, hopefully we can come to a solution... even if its a new 4 speed DR tranny.
-
Yep the brat is still having moving issues... The flywheel was JUST turned a couple of days ago. The disk, PP, TO bearing, and pilot bearing are all new. The machine shop (or subaru dealer?) said something along the lines of maybe the input shaft is broken on the tranny. I just find it odd that the car drove into the garage, got lifted got the engine yanked and put back in and suddenly it doesnt work... why would that break the input shaft? I guess the next logical step though is to replace the tranny. Anyone got a KNOWN GOOD 82 4 speed DR tranny laying around? I know some of you may say just swap in a 5 speed, but I dont really have the money laying around for a tranny AND a kit. Not sure if I want to exchange my clutch setup AGAIN either. See update further down the page....

"Rattle" in 87 GL
Flowmastered87GL replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No I havnt isloated the noise to be either drivetrain or exhaust related. I have new CV's though. I am guessing its either internal to the tranny, the driveshaft, or the cat making the noise though. I wont even start with the right rear brake/bearing assy.... (nasty noise on left turns) thats unrelated though... and the whole trailing arm is getting swapped when I switch to disk brakes. -
"Rattle" in 87 GL
Flowmastered87GL replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmmm good point... it does it under coasting, as well as under power, but maybe I'll try a tank of 89 octane and see what happens... -

Flowmastered87GL replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You mean the honeycomb in the cat coming out?? I suppose thats possible... not the heat shield though cause that fell off a long time ago... now that I know how weld maybe I'll build a new one someday.... On a better note, it made the 100 miles of on the job driving no problem today... very little noise. Had a little rattle and vibration this morning taking shannon to work, but it was a cold morning... after it warmed up it seemed fine... so the tranny is cool for now... but I still gotta keep an eye on it. (checked fluid today, its still clean and full) -
For the past few months my 87 GL has had some kind of drivetrain rattle. For a while it had a little vibration under acceleration from 0-10 MPH, but that went away as it got warmer (and I changed the gear oil too) It almost sounds like little ball bearings in a coffee can gently banging around. Well... today I just HAD to have fun... launched in low range, redlined the first 3 gears... well the rattle is a little louder now... Keep in mind this is the original tranny with 312,900 miles on it.... So... I may have toasted my tranny a little more than it was toasted this morning. Any other things down there that could be rattling?? My guess is some bearing or something in the transmission is bad or maybe a U joint or something, most likely the bearing though... Thoughts? I may be posting in the marketplace for a replacement soon if it ends up getting louder or vibrating again.

Doggy Brat or Doggy motor?
Flowmastered87GL replied to FlyB0y's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmmmm my brat did 70 over the Oregon coast range no problem... had it floored but it did it... tailgate up too (lower the tailgate or remove it to cut drag) Given the rough idle, I am guessing the carb is making it sluggish if doing tune up stuff didnt cure it all. For some reference my 86 GL that I just had, had a bad carb... ran rich, had NO power and was super rough. Changed the carb and it all went away. So... if you have the money and a general clean up and tune up doesnt help... maybe consider a weber carb? -
How much oil pressure is TOO much?
Flowmastered87GL replied to karinvail's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Eh, depends on your engine / oil. My 92 loyale idled at like 5 PSI I swear... My 87 idles at like 20 PSI... cold mornings with the 20W50 get the pressure up NEAR the top, but not pegged. -
Oh man now I gotta make at least a brief appearance on Sunday even if I spend the day wrenching. (unless you are gonna be crashing at rallitek...) I GOTTA see the modded OBS

making my GL faster
Flowmastered87GL replied to Subaru_dude's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you have a carb you can get a Weber carb... wakes the car up MUCH more than just a K&N on a hitachi carb. I have an 87 GL and I am running a full custom exhaust system with a flowmaster 40 series delta flow muffler. Its 2.0 inches to the cat 2.25 to the muffler then 2.5 out. -
Hmmmm between the rain and my lack of days off now.... I may or may not show... sorry to be flakey but I bought my lifted brat BEFORE I met shannon and we are now married and its still not done So the day off MAY be better spent working on the darn thing! I am still up in the air... either have fun and pay $30 OR save $30+ gas and gain a wrenching day... :-\

Back from Maui!! Pics are floating around here and there, but I will find em tomorrow or Wednesday... I'm still kinda dizzy from all the flying. -
I am having a similar issue on my Brat... finally got back from vacation so I am finally gonna try to REALLY get it solved. My money on both this car AND mine is that the flywheel is turned incorrectly. The part where the disk mates was probably turned down, but the outside (where the teeth and stuff are) probably was not.

OR... if your spare is a different size... put a good tire off the front onto the back and put the mismatch spare on the front so the front diff can take up the difference. Or just yank your rear driveshaft and go 3 wheel drive.

this diff clearance owns all

He he, my lifted brat has 12 inches with the big tires on it.... not sure with the hakki's -

Zap, sorry to hear about the accident. If you need to back out to take care of your duties I understand. If you make it great, if not, its an acceptable reason, its not like you overslept or something (the reason I missed taste of subaru)
