How do i remove the bumper frame
StormTrooper replied to MaroonDuneDoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
on my loyale, the nuts are tack welded to the bumper itself, so one has to back the bolts out that are in the engine compartment... -
Goofy Spare Tire Storage Idea

I'm sure if you worked with Tony (soobme) a bit, and shared plans, he could build you a custom setup for a decent price... -
Goofy Spare Tire Storage Idea
StormTrooper replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
might work out pretty well.. I'm looking at the spare tire carrier on the rear of a 4-runner at the J/y as a possible somethin to mod. Always liked the rear swing arm carriers -
On a lighter note, Subaru related

Hopefully I can make it up north some day. Hey, Ezap, could you e-mail or PM me with your snail-mail addy? I'd like to pickup a subarubicon video (vhs) if ya got one. still owe ya $10 from like 2 yrs. ago... -

EA81 Engine Parts Forged Piston Kit....With rings....$515.00 Cast Piston Kit......with rings....$172.52 Turbo Piston Kit.....with rings....$192.52 Add teflon coating...(set of 4)....$67.50 Rings..............................$86.15 Full Gasket Kit....................$53.65 Main Bearing set...................$38.95 Rod bearing set....................$30.95 New water pump.....................$39.93 New Oil pump.......................$67.43 Stainless Intake Valves-set of 4...$75.00 Head diameter 1.63, 1.66, 1.68,1.7 Stainless Exhaust Valves-set of 4..$75.00 Head Diameters 1.38,1.4,1.42 HP Springs (a must w\hp cam).set of 8...$45.00 Valve Seats-intake and exhaust.ea..$4.73 New HP Cam and Lifter Kit (lifters exchange)....$295.00 Looks like it depends on how far you're going to get into that engine. The forged pistons definately cost. If you plan on going hi-po, and get spendy, you'd might as well build it from ground up, with new main bearings, rings, the whole nine...looks like he sells the whole engine hi-po kit kit for around $1000, which includes forged pistons, hp or torque cam, and everything else. I think the general prices for water pumps, oil pumps, rings, gaskets are about average to slightly spendy.

Do ya need em now, or should i use them as incentive for you to come wheel your rig down here? I 'm going to trade my old computer/burner/printer for a red hatch AND the blue wagon!!!! -
Yo, brian... I found a guy who's got a red hatch (dibs) and an 82 blue wagon, both 4x4, that both run for $100 a pop 25 miles North of Santa Cruz....i got dibs on the hatch, but in case you or a buddy were looking for a great old wagon, its a steal! BTW---I got the ball taper lug nuts that came off the same rims you have on your wagon..are those the ones you need?
-
Cool man, will do. When I refer to the widening of exhaust ports, and decking, I'm refering to the much cheaper modding of the single port heads. RAM sells the kit for the bigger springs, valves, and lifters. You just gotta send em the heads, and he'll work 'em for a decent price. The dual port would obviously be the way to go, but I don;t have that kinda dough...

Rear diff gear ratios from Forrester...
StormTrooper replied to StormTrooper's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The entire engine and trans are gone, so i dunno. I assume auto -
I live pretty close to Joe Souza. Next time I'm at my mom's house, I'll stop by his shop and check out the products. I thought that his and Ron's manifolds were worth considering. But now I met a hot rod chevy dood who is interested in subarus, and knows all about souping stuff up and fabrication, so hopefully we'll figure somethin out. Its good that your stirrin the pot, cuz alot of people stop chimin in when it comes to engine mods, but keep us posted on what you find, and i'll do the same. with out the increased manifold flow, the decked heads with larger ports don't mean much, so its important that people modding an EA engine figure something out for the IM...

Xt4 Steering Rack is in my Loyale....
StormTrooper replied to StormTrooper's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that was by no means a jump...there was no pituresque arc, no split-second of pure sky, just straight off the ridge, nose dive, and WHAM!!! GD- that would be the quick fix, to turen the wheel, but as russ said, I gotta disconnect the steering coupler, turn it 180 degrees, and drive it further down the steering rack shaft, cuz i got tight sposts in my turning... -

Xt4 Steering Rack is in my Loyale....
StormTrooper replied to StormTrooper's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sorry guys, I haven;t done a write up yet, but here's the scoop: XT6 steering Rack: Tightest possible steering for gen 3 style soobs. 3.3 lock to lock. Prob is, Its a computer controlled rack, with like 6 different modes for different conditions, which is awesome, but requires computer/wiring stuff plus p/s pump to match.... XT4: A bit tighter than the Gl/Loyale rack, plus its aluminum, not steel. tiny bit bulkier. 2WD or 4WD doesn't matter: same rack. All you'z gottas do it remove y-pipe (or Crossover i think), eazier withpout the sway bar in there, but not neccesary to remove. Then unbolt the four steering rack mount bolts, loosen the nut on the steering joint that the steering shaft from the rack goes into so the shaft can slide out of the joint, and careuffly loosen two of the p/s hardline nuts that run from the softlines, and you got the whole unit disconnected. Oh yeah, remove the two front wheels and the little mini cotter pins on the tierod end balljoints, remove the nuts, and get the tierods ends off of the knuckles, and viola, you have disconnected the steering rack. Keep the tierod ends if they're still in good shape, but both of mine were shot... to install, repeat this process but replace "loosen" and "remove" commands with "tighten" and "properly place".... Remember to properly burp the system and get all air out by turning lock to lock with car on ground and off, then on ground with car on, then off ground with car on, the whole time with the p/s cap off and filling it slowly as air comes out of system...The whining noise at lock should leave the car after driving it around a little.... P.S. my front end was towed in like i biotch and we accidentally connected my streering knuckle 180 degrees the wrong way, so i now drive with an upside down wheel, so take heed of that too....!!! get it aligned afterwards... -
Sorry, maybe this should go in the Newer gen forum... Looknig for 4.44 pumpkins to do the nissan t-case swap.. Saw a wrecked Forrester at the j/y yesterday. The rear diff was sitting on the front seat!! Can anyone tell me what the gear ratio of this diff. is? And possibly the rear diff. ratio of a '95 Legacy L wagon??

StormTrooper replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My stepdad was rummaging through the back of a gen1 wagon, and found 8 motor mounts, brand new!! They fit EA71 and EA81 I believe...sell you a pair for $20, if ya need! -
lets get the ball rollin for a hollister hills day, my buddy can come in his '79 dodge and spot for some of the "Tank Stoppers", if neccessary. Unfortunatly, my Loyale's not up to it, and my old school isn't down here yet. But theres always your rig, and my digicam... Day trips to Tahoe are always high on my priority list, so whenever theres a good dump up there, and youre down, let me know, i can come swoop you up in sac on my way up I-80

brake bleeding tips
StormTrooper replied to brus brother's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
no, you don't reconnect the hose, you pull the hose off one of the male pieces, and cut a nice length off of it, and reconnect it..there's plenty of slack to do this. -
Just a short rain and some drizzle today..Got so happy when it rained, i took the backroad to work down a super muddy strightaway through the cornfield, and swiped my very tail end into a concrete pole on a 90 degree turn!! Tahoe missions are a must for me this year!! Probably will only be able to do day missions by leaving at 4:00 am, but I havent snowboarded in two years and i am fieeeeeeeeeeending!! Yes reverse wheel whip/brake stomping in the icy Squaw Valley Parking lot is quite a thrill, if you didn't eat a heavy breakfast!

Bring the Grey poupon Wagon !! I remember days ago when you were rollin that thing stock... The BRAT looks clean, but i'm into checkin out the rig, vato... We might even be able to get shannonsf and rallyruss down and do a little and a little bbq'in, and whole lotta soob snarchnuffsky. <------:cornfuzz: I'm hopin the day comes, when we can get a strong head count of soobs to come into the california regions, cuz places like hollister hills rule. Not many people in california are up on the old school soob thing at all.. Anyway..let me know when the next time you can come down, and ill see if thats compatible with my schedule.. weekends are better, if not tuesdays and thursday can work, sometimes...damn incosistent work schedule.:madder:

sucks about the bunk score at the boneyard. there's a couple EA82 turbo's at moss landing now, and one Legacy Turb, intact still. Plus that XT that I mutilated still has a clean looking spider intake on it:brow:
-
saw one today, didn't know they existed. did they make them after the RX? tripping cuz this one had a body kit that matched the stock charcoal paint. are they not turb, so therefore not an RX, kinda like the fulltime GL-10's? this dude tried catching up after he got smoked off the light, but couldn't. too bad I was in the Volvo T5, and not my fair game Loyale...would have been fun:brow:
