StormTrooper replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Off Road
woah, the drilled rims dont look bad at all, actually. You're probably right that it don't matter, i was just curious as to how one gets a perfect taper on the holes on the rim, but i guess you already had that figuered out... Looking good!! -

The drilling the rims thing seems very sketchy to me..The hubs are stronger than the steel on the rims and can handle the extra four holes i think, plus you have bigger wheels, so how can two extra studs hurt? not only that, but what about the taper in the rim holes? Wouldn't it be more of a biotch to have to taper the holes, than to have a straight foward conversion that required no special tools, and would leave no room for error when it comes to simply drilling holes and banging in studs? GD- not clowning on your choice, but it seems like you're going that far with a nice project, why not do it the way that's fool proof? Solemente es mi dos pesos :bday: - - those rims are dope!! -

Hey Flow -- 4WD burnouts? Are you making fun of me? Man, that wildfire's goin crazy down there. Fortunately we live in the North. Over 1200 houses destroyed and like 15 or so people dead, that sucks... Rain almost came today, but only drizzled enough for me to wipe the rest of the dried mud off my windsheild. -
1978 Turbo 1.8 Brat

Thats' awesome!!! You're living proof that when there's a will, there's a way!! Next thing I know, there's gonna be a post about a 302 powered wagon!! So what're your plans for the car, long term? Looking to put a lift kit or anything, or straight up spank ricers? Do the gen1 axels fit on the 5sp.? or are the axels off the wagon (EA82) the same length as the gen 1''s?? Man, you got me all stoked to take on some backyard wrenchin! -
I was thinking of spraying my rocker panels with the industrial grade Rhino liner, and doing racing stripes!! The Rhino Liner stuff doesn't chip or fragment easily, otherwise it would be a worthless product, being that it its supposed to take the beating that you dont want your bed to take, plus its quite immpermeable. If you do lets say whack a rock pretty good and nick a chunk out, the nick is not going to spread easily create a water trap, it wont sag like paint. Methinks its a great idea, especially for the inside of the hatch, itll give the floor that rugged, gruff texture. the sucess of the underside might not be that worth it, as it'll be alot of work to get a nice finish down there, plus you'll get overspray all over the suspension components without a ton of prep work... did your soob come with undercoating?

Not sure if it's the springs or the strut assembly iteself on the 2WD strut assemblies for soobs that are shorter, but they are. Not even sure if there is a 2wd gen 1, but possibly ea81 2wd strut stuff would work on a gen 1? pero, solamente son speculaciones, amigo...

Skid plate Qs(EA82 front)
StormTrooper replied to soobme's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
man, I smashed my oilpan so hard i bent the pickup inside. The only reason that my EA82 isn't FUBAR is because the skidplate did such a good job. They're small, but they do the job, plus with the subtle ribbing it gives a few areas of crumple room. Dude, you should design and fab some mean fender flares for people who want or need to cut the fenders for bigger tires... -
EA81 Power Steering Conversion

Brian, take into consideration that pretty much every J/Y has a janky cherry picker to use, with ghetto toyota wheels on it or sumpthin.. Removing two engine mounts shouldn't be any sort of headache, nor should it take much time at all... -

Replace your ball joint while you're at it. Might also want to grab the sway bar mounts off the donor, as you could have warped those..How'd you bend that? Sounds like a doozy -

EA81 NA Mods Questions

BTW- Who knows what "Forged Pistons" are?? RAM Performance sells an EA81 rebuilt kit with Forged Pistons...:cornfuzz: -
Welcome to the board, my friend about your inquiry of the xt suspension, im wondering what exactly has been done to your 4x4 to make it all high..maybe the car has been swapped with adjustable height thingys, and its cranked all the way up? kinda curious as to what's goin on down there... Anyway, the XT 2WD Strut assemblies will go right into your 4WD XT, no prob. Only thing that would impede that is larger tires and if they rub... I can sell you the set of 2WD XT Strut Assemblies that I have here. I was going to put em on my Loyale, but my bigger tires wouldn't be havein it, i think. You likely have the 185/70/13's, so youd be cool. any way, if you want them you can e-mail me by clicking on my name, and doing it through my profile... Hopefully someone can help you with your other inquiries... Good luck :headbang:

Upon doing my research for a write-up on swapping an XT steering rack into a L-series or Loyale, I found this very well written 8-page Acrobat Reader that covers all the different types of Subaru Steering systems, and it turns out there are more differences in the XT steering rack than I had previously thought or was able to fathom.. MAjor difference is that the XT rack is aluminum, as opposed to (steel?). There are different types of seals, and something else too... What's cool is the electronically controlled XT6 steering system, which seems to be the most superior of the swappable systems to EA82 vehicles, plus having the tightest ratio: 3.2 Lock-to-Lock. I am now convinced the XT rack is tighter than the Loyale rack, but not as tight as the XT6 rack. http://www.endwrench.com/pdf/steering/FtSteeringSystemsSp99.pdf

I would be reluctant to take the heads elsewhere, as Don (RAM) is the manufacturer of the custom valves, and he knows exactly how to pimp out those heads to get what you need. It would increase the possibility for a higher margin of error to get the work done at various places than to just have RAM do it all. True, you can save some money, I'm sure, but his quality of work is guarunteed to be better, and sometimes a little extra $$ down will save a crap load of headaches and times...

trip to see that thread brought back.. Don from RAM performance quoted me on that order...but like I said, that's for Bulk orders of 10 or more, and the likeylhood of getting 10 broke rump roast sube heads together to simulataneosly put $1250 on some hi-po is damn near impossible... Dunno about porting out single port heads...pretty sure what he uses are the freshly manufactured SUB4 Dual ports... You can send him your single port heads, and he'll bore out the intake and exhaust, and send it back with larger custom valves, lifters, springs etc...that seems to me to be the way to go if you wanted to do that..

thanks brudda, I don't have the FSM, so your research would be appreciated...If you could scan the pages and e-mail em to me so i can include them in my USRM write-up, that'd be cool too -

It was actually a very easy job, with a whiz like russ around (he works on Fire Trucks and stuff for San Jo, CA... The bitch was the bashed oil pan, cuz the pickup got bent, and that took us about three hours and a 40 of King Cobra:drunk: GD--not quite sure yet, but the fact that the XT is more a aero-handler so to speak, plus the different part number, and just from what i noticed driving it home, i thikn it is tighter---but i think my wheels are still toed in a little, so its hard to say. But I definately will do a step by step write up, when i do in fact have proof that its tighter.. -
