  1. Talked to a subie gyrocopter engine builder from Marysville Cali through e-mail, and he says that his Gear Reduction Boxes are compatable with an automotive tranny. So there are kits available for lower gears via a setup that would bolt up between the motor and trans... this would involve moving the engine back, id assume... what does 2.18 to 1 compute to when reduction is ran from in the front of the driveline? unfortunatly they cost a grip...just curious how significant the gearing for off road purposes would be improved..this could do wonders for someone's buggy or hatch!
  2. you can get a good idea of the materials cost from http://www.rhinobuggies.com.au/prod02.htm which is the site that sweet82 got his buggy from...that plus your donor car plus whatever mudrat (john) would charge for labor... sounds badass...
  3. you're right...my bad. are the stock xt6 rims 5-lug 13"s or the same as legacy?? if so, i would suggest the larger rim/tire combo...
  4. you'd have to do some major suspension work up front in order for the car to handle the weight of that block. Or possibly an aftermarket impreza strut could handle that kind of weight, me don't know. Curiuois as to how you could "beef up" the rear-end, but still keep the sube hubs and wheels, or why you would want little 13" rims and limited choice of puny tires to handle the power a 351 would crank out of the rear. If you use the 351, you're also using the tranny to match it, no? So then you're custom fabbing a driveshaft to what rear end? a sube? prolly not. The rear diff wont be able to handle that direct power, nor will the hubs methinks. and axels???!!?? maybe you shoulkd think about a solid rear from a suzuki; it could be fabbed in there maybe, but man...either way, alot of headache and $$$.. Get wheel to wheel measurements in the rear, and see if any solid rears come close to that... When there's a will, there's a way...but one must also consider that there is a fine line between possibility and plausibility... Good luck..
  5. next time you have a day off. Maybe after it rains...It's only a 2 hr. 20 min. drive to my house from yuor neck o' the woods. plus I'm only 10 min. from Hollister ORV park, and 20 min. from the HUGEST boneyard in this central coast/ north area. (That's where I rescued a running RX in GREAT shape from hitting the rows for only $500)
  6. wouldn't mind getting my hands on some more thourogh directions..
  7. I always used to use that little crevice behind the emblem for a..er..hiding place... cool idea, bri... hey man, you should come down to hollister soon and hit the course with your wagon, and we'll shoot the shizzle
  8. subarubrat's is a 6" lift, huh?? That's what I'm wanting...How did you come across that rectangle tube lift? I'd like one of those...any info, or was that fabbed from those directions?
  9. not blueprints by any means, but on Subarubrat.com, there is an article on what is required to build your own 6" lift, if you are good at deciphering verbal instructions...
  10. that looks like it's coming along!! are you doing the straight up tube-frame, or do you have the panels to make it look rhino-ish? what kind of wheels you using?
  11. this is where ol' uncle pug taps on your shoulder and smiles...and endearingly says: "Little nephew of mine, it's about time you stopped by your local junkyard and scored some of my ever so helpful 15" alloys. Then, we're gonna mosey on down to the local tire shop, and pick up some aggressive 195/r70/15's for ya, you wont regret it." what the hell did i just say? :drunk:
  12. I just stumbled across this website: http://www.spiralmax.com/ looks like they're selling a pretty solid and proven product that reaps great benefits for the price and ease of installation.... anyone have any information/ experience on these that would counter my motivation to buy one?
  13. nuthin beats good ol' mud and rocks! Let me know when you plan on hittin' the trails out there ahead of time, and I'll see if I can make it down for a run or two, and guide for ya...
  14. I was half kidding, but it would be cool, as it is a straight-up course, with many different aspects of off-road application. Another cool place we could go is the "Sand Highway" at Pismo Beach, Cali...that's closer to LA in San Luis Obispo county... That place is AWESOME...there's dunes galore, comp hills, all kinds of sand craziness!! I took my stock soob out there, just had to air down a bit, and had a blast!! Being in Cali, we are privvy to the most diverse of terrain...we got snow courses, mud trails, dunes, desert, redwood forest trails...etc.. Jared, I think the Subaru communtiy can have a great influence in this section of the country, as there are many off-road enthusiasts in cali, and so much good roading to do around here..plus with the economy the way it is, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few heads ditch the Jeeps for a old beater hatch!! Anyway...keep up the motivation, and if you need any help getting this club together, I'm more than willing to make it a reality...
  15. I didn't think the suspension lifts would be very good for the driveline, unless you nicknamed your rig "CVSnapper"! Havin' a hard time seeing how you'll get the front diff. ratios lower without actually cracking the tranny case and swappin' gears. Would you mind e-mailing me or letting me in on how this 10-12" lift can be achieved? BTW- members should be admitted according to their ability to complete the Hollister ORV off-road obstacle couse!!
  16. are you doing more body lift, or suspension lift? Is a combo of the two the best way to do it?
  17. I know you're one of the old school hp guys, i was saying it would be cool to have some of the guys come down where yoiu're from and tear up some cali. spots, as there are some cool places too. I just won't be able to claim "Stomper" status in a stock car, so I'll have to just use balls where bigger wheels aren't, till I finish the project i am yet to start :brolleye: , that;s all. I wasn't saying nothin bout your experience, as I am sure you have plenty of it.. Project not started yet, but it will involve gutting the 1600, and dropping in an EA-81 decked out for max breathing and low-end. Toyota 6-lug w/ black Pacer rims wrapped in 30"+ mudders is my goal...I need some serious help on suspension mods, as I am clueless, maybe you could give me some advice. I am looking for something a bit x-treme as this project car will never see the concrete.
  18. yeah, I'll be goin' bigger than that when all's said & done, which I'm guessing will be a year from now. for now it's just the loyale with pug alloys and Dayton SR tires and no mods cept rear discs, so i wont have any "Stomper" abilities for awhile, but you'd be surprised where a lack of fear, and some practice will get you in a bone stock 4x4. roo, you gotta come up to the hollister orv park this fall, we should get a little cali meet together, and maybe some oregon, or even washington boys can come down too... :bday:
  19. good luck on your swap..This is a frequently done swap, so it has been well documented. Go to the USRM link at the top of the message board page, and go under mods, or something, and you will find the recipe you're looking for..
  20. not loking for the dual range, just any old junk box that'll squeeze in there to get the car around for a couple more months, as a seized diff is prevently that now...I was asking about a 4sp. s/r from an EA81 in particular, now that i've narrowed down priorities. The ea71 will come flying out of that hood as soon as I get my hands on it.. So for the ea81 s/r tranny to work on the ea71 motor, I'll need just the proper bellhousing, and the flywheel, clutch, clutch cable from the EA81, right?
  21. Yeah, when the weather gets wet, the ORV park at hollister insane..There's mud bogs, obstacle courses, rock crawling courses, trails, hills, jumps! and a man-made snorkel zone!! hey brian, you should roll down here on a day trip in a couple months after it rains, and see how your ea81 does... Roo - what kind of rims will you be selling? I'm looking for a set of black or white 6-lug steel alloys, the standard American Racing off-road rim. 15X8 but yo, It'll be awhile before I'll have my rig ready ...but when it is, it'll be schweet!
  22. I'm down for it.. I'm central/north cali, but I'm down for some southern trips, or up here at the Hollister ORV park!! Rooinater, I got a '80 wagon that looks dead on yours 'cept its silver...Little 16booger in there, and it stomps!!
  23. elementary, dear watson, elementary... Cool, thanx miles. Since the car is a few hundred miles north,I don't know where the starter is on that car, but now that I think about it, methinks it is on the side, as it is a late model ea71..it's a '80 1/2 silver wagon, 4X4, looks like Rooinater's. its got a recent ea71 clutch in there, but if need be, we'll replace it with a j/y clutch just need this thing to run for my steppops for another two months, then he's givin' it back to me!!
  24. Hit about 30-40mph in reverse, crank the wheel while yanking the e-brake...front-locking wheels make for a great, clean reverse 180!!
