1978 Brat parts vehicle
TRUSTY MUSTY replied to randyintexas's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I'm looking for the two little springs associated with the tranny end of the clutch cable: the clutch return spring (should be running from the intake manifold to the clutch release lever) and another spring running from a hole in the heat shield behind the starter to a rubber loop around the clutch cable. Either of those available by chance? -

Got it for $3300. I think it lived in Idaho for a while. They pulled it behind their RV for years. Then some people out by Lake Tahoe bought it and restored it to its current state, shooting for the Ronald Reagan brat look. The inside is in pretty good shape, but new carpets and reupholstered seats are on my to-do list. No rust and runs great though. -

you wouldn't happen to have the door to the glove box would you? if you do, i'd love to see a pic. mine is all scratched up. And is there some kind of shelf that sat under the glove box? It looks like there used to be something there in mine but I'm not sure what it was...

Me too! That was one of the first things I did when I got it. (as you can see in the third picture i wasn't quite done with the front) Makes a HUGE difference. -

BOSS 2" EA82 Lift Kits- $100!!!
TRUSTY MUSTY replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Products for your Subaru
so lets say right now when i push the height control button, the car lifts 2". if i get the lift, would the car normally cruise at 2" higher than stock and then 4" higher than stock with the height control engaged, or will it just always ride 2" higher than stock? In the case of the potentially 4" higher than stock scenario, would that necessitate lowering the engine etc? -
BOSS 2" EA82 Lift Kits- $100!!!
TRUSTY MUSTY replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Products for your Subaru
I've got an 87 Gl-10 with a still functioning Pneumatic Height control system in it. Is this lift the kind of thing i should look into once it starts giving me trouble (i hear its inevitable...) or can the 2" lift work with it? -

TRUSTY MUSTY replied to TRUSTY MUSTY's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks so much everyone for your responses! Now I have a couple things I need to try. I wont have time all this week unfortunately to mess with it but I'll keep you posted and likely ask more questions later! and yes, this is the turbo version.- 8 replies

overheats with the A/C on
TRUSTY MUSTY replied to TRUSTY MUSTY's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
no it does not. I tried with both the A/C and the heat, and although both work well (the blow really cold and really hot) the electric fan does not engage. What does that mean?- 8 replies

As the temperatures here in Utah have hit well over 100 degrees for the past couple days, my GL-10 has started having trouble keeping its temp down. I've been very cautious and kept a close eye on the temp gauge on the dash to make sure it doesn't overheat. I've found that it stays cool just fine even at highway speeds without the a/c on, but with the A/C, the temp goes up fast and I have to turn it off again to keep the car cool. Does this indicate that I need a new radiator? Is there something I can do to get it to keep cool even with the A/C or is this just how it goes with an '87? I'm gonna flush the fluid one more time and see if that helps. any recommended brands for coolant?

I took a closer look at the CV axle today and sure enough the boot is torn a bit. Any recommendations on where to get a new one? it's easy to find them online but i'm not sure what brands i should avoid. what are your go to places for good subaru parts? even though the other side isn't bothering me, would it be beneficial to replace both front CV's at the same time? my thought is that because the other one is 25 years old, it might be getting old and slow anyways. any truth to that? any benefit to evening out like that?

I recently purchases a beautifully clean '87 GL-10 Turbo equipped with a working Pneumatic Height Control System. Works great, feels great, and looks great... BUT (those of you who are familiar with the system were waiting for that but...) I noticed that when I'm riding on the higher setting (when the system is engaged and the car is fully raised) and I turn RIGHT, there is a knocking wobbling sound coming from the front right wheel. Once I get going straight again, the sound tappers off and goes away until I turn right again. Any ideas?

1987 GL-10 Turbo Wagon MPG?
TRUSTY MUSTY replied to TRUSTY MUSTY's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks so much guys! ya... the three speed is the only thing i don't like about it... i drove 4 hours to buy it and i found out it was automatic when i got there. bit of a let down, but its still a champ. luckily it's only part time 4WD so at least that helps. -
FIRST POST! Is 19mpg normal for an '87 GL-10 Turbo wagon? I bought a really clean '87 GL-10 Turbo wagon with an automatic 3 speed transmission a couple months ago. The previous owner only drove it a couple hundred miles for the year he had it. It only has 123,000 miles on it (just a baby!) I'm not really getting the mpg's I was hoping for. I've been driving really conservatively, but I only average about 250 miles per tank (250/13 gallons =19mpg). My question is: Is 19mpg normal or is that low? I realize that pretty much anything that goes wrong with a car is going to hurt your gas milage, but is there anything in particular i should look into given the year and model? Any common problems out there? Anything with older cars in general that should be done to restore gas milage? SUPPLEMENTAL INFO -supposedly the fuel tank capacity is actually 15.9 gallons, but the fuel gauge says its empty at 13, so thats when I've been filling up again and calculating miles. -I also replaced the oxygen sensor and got a new timing belt. -I replaced the fluids when I got it and I've been using a couple different additives -new tires -One thing I've noticed is that the car doesn't coast very well at all. Even on a good decline, if I'm going 35mph and I let my foot off the gas, it'll slow down quite a bit, whereas in my wife's new forester, the car will continue to gain speed just from rolling down the hill. I'm a newbie and certainly no mechanic so please educate!
