I have a 79 Brat. Recently bought Gabriel G55726 Ultra Struts for it, these are listed for 82-87 Brat. I have been told they will fit the Gen 1 just about 1 inch shorter in total length. Looking at themthis apears to be correct, I will report on the results when I get them installed. Chasing parts to rebuild the whole front end, so it may be a while. For rear shocks I bought Monroe 33097, they installed and fit fine. They fit a bunch of 80's fords including Mustang, so they are easy to find.

I found these diagrams for the Gen 1 Brat: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairguides/Subaru-ff-1-1300-1400-1600-1800-Brat-1970-1984-Repair-Guide/Wiring-Diagrams/Wiring-Diagrams/_/P-0900c15280065bf4 -
Got the Gabriel struts in, I will post info after the install. At first glance it looks like they will work. The first place I orderded them from returned my $ annd said they were out of stock. Looks like these may also be going obsolete soon. I ended up getting some off Amazon for under $100 for both shipped. I noticed the part number on the strut was different than the one on the box, I will pass on that info on also.
