Can you get the $1800 from the bug's insurance and pick up the door at a yard? I realize the car's an '01, so maybe you want to go the "get it fixed right" route, but just curious. I've never owned a car worth fixing at that price. Friend of mine got a check for $500+ when someone rubbed the paint off his old jeep Cherokee's bumper while parallel parking. Needless to say the paint is still missing and he's $500 richer. -Heikki

So you like wings and TV's? There seemed to be a $h1tload of each in that place! I will say the midwest does sports bars in a manner us east coasters can only dream of, and those wings were darn good! I'll keep that in mind, I am out there every few months. -Heikki

Really? I happened to be at that place for dinner after work with some colleagues two weeks ago. I find myself in Farmington Hills once in a while on business. Unfortunately it was a Thursday. Would have been great to see a row of WRXs out in Big-3 country! -Heikki

Who mentioned politics? :-) There are a lot of things to be fair and balanced about. Their other motto: "We report, you decide" -Heikki (male) Back on topic: I understand people trying to help this guy out, but take that money and buy yourself an SVX that isn't trashed! Maybe I'm just jealous that I don't have $5k to throw around. ($5k being the current bid last I checked)

I have recently become somewhat interesested in performing this TSB, but have yet to find anyone who has personally performed it. I found a few replies on nasioc from folks who had the dealer perform it, but I am interested in details from some ShadeTrees who have attempted it. 1stsubaruparts.com shows this illustration (where #2 is the "COUPLING") Unfortunately I cannot confirm that this COUPLING matches the TSB COUPLING because the site accepts part numbers but does not display them. But I am still not 100% on the location of this part. Is this the coupling which can be seen in the middle of the column just above the inner CV joint? Looks like quite a job to remove/replace, but the TSB lists only 0.3 hours. Anyone have a service manual page that explains this procedure? 0.3 hours doesn't see TOO scary. Lots of questions, hopefully lots of answers. Thanks. -Heikki

I don't know about Forester-specific, but the clunk is very common in Subarus. Do a search here and on nasioc.com and I think you will find a lot of information on the "clunk". As for the brakes, don't know. The last car I had this problem with repeatedly had the parking brake tied to the front wheels, so when I set it after driving the hot discs cooled unevenly and regularly killed the rotors. I am assuming the Forester does not activate the front calipers when the parking brake is set (?) -Heikki

I was thinking I would catch some grief for that :-) That's part of my bling-bling kit, which includes 30" spinner wheels, chrome grill & fender-well trim, limo tint, blue headlights, and that hood badge. Actually, it's a company car, as I work in telematics development for a company that puts those little stars on their cars. -Heikki

Left early for work this morning, and driving along I-78E I looked in my rearview mirror to see what looked like Legacy headlights with cab/clearance lights above them. I slowed down to let the car pass, wondering what kind of a person puts these lights on a Legacy ('90 - '94). The car passes by, and it's a LegaBRAT! (?) Anyone here? Is this a one-off? It had PA plates on it, but then again so do most cars passing through there that early in the morning... Sorry for the poor pics. It was a digital camera in the dark drizzle. Click on the thumbnails for larger versions of these poor pics. Curious. -Heikki

I run cheapy snows on my car, but the gf who doesn't want any problems runs the Nokian RSi. Awesome! However, they come at a price. I don't have any reviews, but perhaps a tire worth looking for reviews of She ran Blizzaks for one winter, but after getting a new car got a new set of snows and decided to go with with Nokians. My father runs the Blizzaks on his car, and they are great. Our only complaint is the treadlife, others do better than Blizzaks (IMO). -Heikki

So this weekend I finally received my new springs from iON and had a chance to install them... (click for larger version) More photos of before and after here. I am running these on GR-2's. From the stock springs (also on GR-2's) the difference in the ride is noticable but not TOO stiff. I am quite happy with the results. ipd rear sway bar, F/R strut tower braces (bought used from list member), GR-2's + ion springs (needed struts and springs anyway), and WRX take-offs (used on ebay) with traction T/A's really make for a pretty good handling car on something of a budget. Now I just need the EJ20T swap. -Heikki
