  1. Nice wagon! I like it; looks exactly the same as the facelift Omega wagons we got here in NZ. Same taillights.
  2. Nice, where'd ya get that? Wasn't on trademe.
  3. Interesting video of an old-gen Sub that's still got it. Loving the Peugot wheels. I don't know how to embed a video so here's the link: Enjoy.
  4. Basically, Toyota has decided to import the stripped-out JDM 86 base model. Seems pretty sweet, apart from the overdone sticker kit on the model shown. Article's below, have a look-see: http://www.3news.co.nz/Design-your-own-car-online/tabid/423/articleID/300672/Default.aspx And the actual car: http://www.the86.co.nz/86RC/
  5. Nice... Hummers are mainly for posers. I've never actually seen one offroad, although they are pretty rare in NZ. Your Legacy looks better, anyway. Probably handles better, too.
  6. Did you hear about the 70-something woman who bought one of the TRD specials? Crazy. I hope she enjoys it. Still, why not. Something more interesting than your usual Honda Jazz. I reckon they look pretty cool too; my dad actually owns one. It was the ex-demonstrator from Balclutha. He got the base model 86 in white with an auto. Still pretty good though. Corners like you wouldn't believe. Not the fastest in a straight line, and the engine sounds pretty bad stock. Almost sounds like a diesel at times; probably something to do with the direct injection. Could definitely do with a better exhaust. And, the budget model only has an open diff.
  7. I did see that, yeah. I'm from Dunedin too, not just studying here. Did you see the RX/II that was in Cromwell? $3000, and sweet as. Owned by a wrecker for God-knows how long. Wish I had the cash. My ideal car would be a 2nd-gen touring wagon, EA81S, with a 5-speed AWD RX gearbox, 1.59 low range and rear LSD. But that's a distant pipe dream, at this point.
  8. Good plan. Sounds like a fairly solid car, and it sure has a bit of history with your family. 102,000km is nothing! It's great to see someone finally taking care of an old Subaru in NZ; nobody here seems to remember anything before the Legacy, or at least the third-gen Leone/Omega. If only I wasn't a broke student...
  9. Funnily enough, when I first saw this post I also thought of that... Then realised they were talking about the US! You can beat me on the further south though. Just.
  10. Nice going! Where'd you find that? It's pretty mint for a 70s NZ Subaru. Is it from Central?
  11. Seems really strange to see a turbo Legacy with no IC. All the ones here in NZ have the WAIC, or have been retrofitted with AAIC. I've never actually seen one without an IC before; I didn't know Subaru ever made a non-IC Legacy. Nice find though; unmolested first-gens are getting rare even here in the home of JDM.
  12. Our 2.0 3rd-gen 5-speed SR Impreza is rated to tow 650kg unbraked and 1200kg braked... In New Zealand. I've had up to a ton on it unbraked, although the clutch did not like the hill start, and it was gutless to the extreme... DR would have been nice there. But the moral of the story is, don't tow a rally car (KP60 Starlet)+trailer with a 2.0 Impreza. Also, in relation to Loyale 2.7's DR XV post, that's the 3rd-gen XV, not the latest 4th-gen based variant. We got it with DR in NZ too, but the 4th-gen is 6-speed or CVT only. Pity, as the previous XV had terrible clearance, but now we get one with good clearance and no DR... Can't win.
  13. Bit late to this thread, but here in NZ, we got the 'normal' double-side reverse on the Leone, through to 1989, and then the single-side reverse on the Omega, from '89 through '93. This would correspond to the 'GL' and the 'Loyale' eras in the States, one would presume.
  14. Sorry, just to clarify I should have said that it was ONLY JDM Imps that didn't come with the dual-range. The JDM Foresters had the low range, and the 2.0L ones had the lower 1.447:1 reduction gears, compared to the 1.19:1 in the 2.5L Foresters, Outbacks and just about everything else. The 1.447, according to the guys on AuSubaru, is almost as good as the 1.59:1 in the L series. So, as ratty's gearbox is from a 2.0, he may have gotten the lower 1.447 gears. No guarantee though. NZDM and UKDM, AUDM etc Imprezas all came with dual-range. Except USDM. The story was the same with the Legacy; JDM was single-range only, whereas just about everywhere else the Legacy was dual range. I say was, as there are no 5th gen dual-range Legacys, and I'm not sure if even the base model Outback 5th gen has a dual-range. However, some JDM Outbacks had dual-range and some didn't (at least first gen ones; not too sure on the newer models). Subaru's gearbox allocation was really all over the place. An example of this randomness is in the 2.0R that I mostly drive. In the owner's manual, in all non-turbo manuals, the dual-range is specified. Yet, it is not fitted to ours... I think is because it is the 2.0R Sport model, which at launch was quoted as having "the same drivetrain (and interior, suspension and body) as the WRX downstream of the clutch" (which I am dubious about due to the different gearboxes Subaru uses. I doubt they would put a strong WRX 5-speed in an NA 2.0L. I should really check the gearbox code, but I'm lazy. Still, I could be wrong.). Here's a pic of an imported, JDM Impreza 4wd hatch. N/A. No dual range. Anyways, sorry for getting off topic and spamming up your thread. Nice build. Lifted DR Leagcys are pretty sick. We need some here.
  15. If it's from a JDM 2.0, then it must be from a Forester. To the best of my knowledge, no JDM Impreza has ever had a dual-range gearbox, only the Forester. I say this as I live in NZ, which is pretty much the home away from home of JDM...
