  1. So, picked up an EA81S twin carb setup today... Going to be going on this EA82 shortly. Was rebuilt a couple of years ago, looks to be in great nick. Basically stole it at the price I paid. Was on a jet boat with an EA81, hence the welded thermostat housing. Have an unchopped one to fit. Just need to figure out how to hook up the manual choke... Anyone got a spare manual choke for an ea82 body they can send me? I know they were made in limited numbers.
  2. She's going well, have been driving her at least once a week on small excursions. Picked up a few bits today from a retiring boat-builder in Rakaia who uses Subaru motors in his jet boats... EA81S twin carb setup, recently rebuilt (to go on the EA82 in my blue wagon Gertie) Also grabbed some high lift EJ18 cams, high compression EG33 pistons and Weber down draught manifolds to build a carby EJ22 to go in the green machine eventually... This will be paired with a FWD EJ gearbox with an STi LSD.
  3. Passed its WOF at Crowesport! Registered and insured, ready to drive. https://www.facebook.com/541010192618217/posts/5117505958301928/?sfnsn=mo
  4. Also, from further research I did it looks as though a Datsun 510 handle should fit in terms of the mounting and mechanism attachment, however they are slightly more diagonal on the side profile and as such are wider at the bottom of the handle. I suspect this would interfere with the Subaru door handle recess.
  5. So, took the gamble on a 1984 Brumby/Brat door handle. Fits perfectly. They are exactly the same part besides a slight pattern difference on the face of the handle.
  6. That's awesome! Have you got a link to the thread? Looks like it has been through a few owners since then and possibly hasn't been as loved. The beautiful wooden dash fascia has been replaced with green plastic unfortunately. The stereo is gone. Dash cluster is now upgraded with tachometer. Suspension also looks to have been lowered. Rear end has been partially repainted in a poor colour match green. For interest, a door handle from a second gen Brumby fits perfectly. Took a gamble there as first gen bits are near impossible to find anymore. Taking it into crowesport for a WOF next week.
  7. Right front external door handle is broken on my late first gen Leone. Latch mechanism also seems to be jammed internally - can't get it to retract the locking jaw. Looking for both items. Shipping to New Zealand required. Thanks
  8. I've recently watched a US YouTube channel where they Tesla swapped a Brat so it can be done. There's a crashed MG EV for sale on trademe at the moment...
  9. Long-term I'd love to convert one of the subies to electric. Probably the next one to blow a motor haha
  10. A Torana! Lucky man! I'm guessing it's not an XU1 lol. Yes, the old subies are fun but safe and modern cars are what you need for family life. My partner runs an Outlander PHEV which we've put 10,000 kms on since August...
  11. Agree, I'm not usually a huge fan of the Fugly models but there's something about this one that just looks right with the twin headlights, bumper delete, green colour and the mags. Yes will tidy it up, get it WOFed, and take it to a few classic car events. We have classic rego in NZ for vehicles over 40 yrs so it's super cheap to register. Haha yeah I have 4 cars now... 3 old subies and my Pathfinder 4wd for club trips.
  12. Recently bought a gen 1 sedan. Unfortunately drivers door handle is broken and so is passenger door external lock. Will the door locks and external handles from a Gen 2 Brumby/Brat fit a late 1980 Gen 1 sedan? From my reading here it seems they will. PFA
  13. So I am now the proud owner of 3 old Subarus... Not sure how this happened as I really wasn't planning on buying another at this point, but I couldn't pass up this vehicle. It's a 1980, NZ new, very last of the first gen Leone. 4 door sedan. 1600 DL but has been upgraded with the GL dash with tachometer. Needs a bit of panel and paint work but all there and all straight. Was a Wanaka car from Central Otago so about as good as they get rust wise. Has some awesome patina. Also came with a trove of parts including essentially two complete engines disassembled, two parts gearboxes and a brand new clutch. Unfortunately the driver's door handle is broken and door is stuck shut. Need to pull the door trim. Also need to fix the headlight high/low beam switch for the WOF. Does anyone know if Datsun 510 external handles fit? They look pretty similar. Otherwise I've heard gen 2 handles fit. Enough talking, here's the pics
  14. Nice, I need to do this on my wagon, the bush has basically ceased to exist after 450,000 kms...
  15. I've read a couple of threads of people using Bosch ones to fit early VW Golf models instead. These are still available. See this thread https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/141806-aaviacv-questions/
  16. Here's a link to a video of a 90s Corolla vs a new one in an offset crash test. You can imagine how poorly a more lightly built Subaru would perform. https://youtu.be/xidhx_f-ouU
  17. The non turbo EA82 vehicles are great fun, characterful and reliable vehicles that are an economic classic to own. What they are not, is a safe vehicle. They are on the lighter end of construction even by 1980s standards (compared to something bigger, like a Camry or Falcon or something American) and in a collision with a modern vehicle they will perform very poorly indeed. At the end of the day, if your parents are buying the vehicle, they will probably decline it. If you want a modern safe Subaru that still has something of the "classic Subaru" feel, I would recommend a manual normally aspirated 2.5 litre SG Forester. I've owned one, and it is the closest I have come to replicating my EA82 experience with a modern vehicle. If it's your money, I'd buy the XT, and enjoy it. Hope this helps.
  18. Nice work. Have put a similar amount of effort into my old wagon. The more I drive it, the more I love it. They're just such characterful old cars.
  19. Thanks! I was so bored last night I watched your video of driving up Mt Hotham. Great soundtrack from the EJ22.
  20. Took her for a wee drive the other day. Nek minnit, snap lockdown!
  21. All fixed! HGs were actually ok. Bloody frost plug let go. Makes sense as it didn't get hot.
