Brake Calipers - 79 Wagon
junk250 replied to sjschlag's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
You need a brake caliper tool, you can borrow one from auto zone no cost. It's a tool that screws the brake piston down, then you can proceed with the pads. -

Watching this vid never gets old, a jeep would have been stuck in 2 seconds, and then they would cut out the part where they get towed out of the mud ..lol -
Windshield Gasket - Gen 1 vs Gen 2 Brat
junk250 replied to sancofw's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I need a windshield gasket for a 79 wagon, and they dont seem to be available at all. Wondered myself if anything else could be made to fit, might be worth a try to fit a later model ? I wouldn't use that window weld urethane though, it will just MELT rubber gaskets. It's made to attach glass to metal window frames ! (late model type without a rubber gasket) -
Good and Bad for my new Brat

Hello, I would start by adjusting the valves on the bad cylinder. A tight valve will cause low compression. Hope this helps ! -
Saved one 78 wagon from death dr
junk250 replied to ivans imports's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Sounds like a deal, and a GL so it has the quad headlights right? I wish my 79 wagon was a GL, want to swap grills and emblems? ...lol. Is it an auto, 4 speed, 5 speed, 4WD ? post some pics ! -
HELP ME PLEASE! distributor problems...
junk250 replied to RustyBrat's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Hello, I beleive Ruparts is correct. The easiest way is to just swap distributors, then the wiring will match up. Put the non electronic dist. back into the brat, electronic dist. back in the wagon, then you have the correct dist. and wiring in each. Hope this helps.- 5 replies

1979 Subaru Brat Fuel pump no go
junk250 replied to levears's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Well not anything, but could be a lot of things. (Ignition switch, bad fuse, bad wire, fuse link ect.) I believe most Subarus have an inertia switch because of the electric fuel pump. I'm not positive where it is, but I believe it is behind the drivers side panel by your left foot, below where the hood latch is, and behind the plastic panel. -

Not too many compact cars that can do that ! ...OK, none. I've seen tractors and Jeeps get stuck in a lot less mud. -
1979 Subaru Brat Fuel pump no go
junk250 replied to levears's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
It could be anything, but there is an inertia/crash fuel pump shutoff switch that will cut power to the fuel pump. -
What's wrong with my clutch?!? '74 DL1400
junk250 replied to scoobyscoodle's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I agree with Ivans imports, Sounds like a classic clutch failure, most likely popped a spring or shoe in the clutch. -
I see now he welded on a single carb intake. Just buy two webers for the original dual intake, problem solved.

The people climbing out of the 360 look like giants, but @ 66 mpg who cares ? This is the coolest Subaru Advert I've seen, I like the Wagon.

Nobody likes my link ? Those wacky Russians, the last 40 seconds are golden I think ! That mud had to be 3 foot deep. -
I'm not up on performace Subarus , but I was a VW BUG mechanic back in the day and built a bunch of BUG engines(mostly stock). Its amazing how similar VW and Subaru engines are, you have 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1800 ect., and almost any combination of parts might fit. With the VW, the 71' on 1600 thin stud block was supposed to be best, then you had many combinations of crank, heads, pistons, cams that could be used in a build. I had a 56' 40 horse 1200 BUG that would cruise at 70 mph all day long. The OHV boxer is a neat motor.

Rock Auto has Beck-Arnley EA-71 pistons with rings for 27.79 each. I searched 1979 dl / engine / piston. Hope this might help !

I'll say this, the Hitachi is sensitive/moody. A month or two later I'm still tweaking it ! After rebuild ran perfect for a few days, then just quit on the highway. I gave it a hillbilly rebuild on the side of the road and drove it home. Filled the fuel bowl with carb cleaner and sat overnight and better the next day. Carb tuning Choke/timing really makes a difference, VW bug carbs were just like them, If its out of whack it wont run right. I wasn't getting good mileage/performance, and after messing with primary venturi setting and primary choke setting and readjusting carb and timing about 20 times it is actually running awesome and getting good mileage (about 28 overall). The probs were the primary bottom plate/throttle cable and choke was out of adjustment. The choke setting really makes a difference, of course you set it to open fully, but there is a sweet spot where it will fully open and still have a slight venturi effect. Hope this helps somebody, it is possible to rebuild a Hitachi ! I'm still saving for a Redline Weber Kit...LOL

Leeroy, Thanks for the info, I reread this thread and it seems I have more options than I thought. If I read right, a gen 1 top mount starter bellhousing(mine is a gen 1 1979 automatic) can be swapped to side mount starter "fat case" bellhousing and I can use later ea-71, ea-81, ea-82 5 speed trans ? The 5 speed FWD transmissions all seem to be similar/same (t71g,t81g,5mt) a bellhousing change in there between t71 and t81 ?, so if I can swap bellhousings and fit with swapping flywheel, petals, clutch ect. and maybe fit a later 5 speed in it that would be great ! t81g fits "ea81 only", but can you swap bellhousings to fit a ea-71 ? I want my gen 1 Automatic to be a 5 Speed manual. If this is right,... this should be a STICKY.
