I hate to ask again, but I'm not clear on what swaps. I have googled to no end and still cant find any info on what transmissions/bell housings will swap between a(Gen-1) 1979 EA_71 automatic to a 5 speed manual. Can I use a later EA-81 (side mount starter)bell housing on an ea-71 with top mount starter and corresponding later 5 speed manual front drive ? The only sure fit seems to be 1978-79 5 speed manual, but I suspect later 5 speeds might fit with a later side mount starter bell housing. My EA-71 has the top mount starter ? thanks !

I rebuilt my Hitachi carb, much better but...

Here is a pic of it, #10 Throttle bypass valve. It mounts directly to the carb on the back, below the other two vacuum pull offs that are on a bracket. It is supposed to have some sort of a seal on the plunger, mine was MIA. I have the o ring seal from the kit, but the valve is missing its rubber seal. Its a 1979 DL EA-71. -
I rebuilt my Hitachi carb, much better but...

I'd love to have a Weber but I just cant afford one, the Hitachi carb kit was only 6.00 lol. I know what you are saying about the warped tops, but it seems to be working good. I wasn't getting very good mileage with the leaky gaskets, I expect the mileage will be much better now. Edit: I forgot to say the float level was WAY out of whack when I took it apart, float is now set right. Thanks -
I did what I could with 2 cans of carb cleaner and a kit. It was obvious the gaskets were shot and probably dirty jets. After rebuild runs much better, the idle screw was turned all the way in and wouldn't effect the idle, after rebuild it would adjust normally (a turn out or so at idle). This thing has 7 jets I think and is a pain to take apart, and put back together on and off the car ect. First thing I noticed when I took the top off was the power piston was sticking , I took steel wool to the piston and bore and helped a lot. The new accelerator pump is still leaking or something, I should have polished the bore there also. It runs much better, but I still need to get the air/fuel mixture plug out(I didn't want to mess anything up) and I didn't clean the egr. But one little problem, the throttle bypass valve fell out in pieces(not included in the kit) and obviously needs to be replaced. There was a new symptom after rebuild, it was skipping/sucking down funny on deceleration, and I went straight to the valve I knew was bad and disconnected the vacuum and the skipping stopped but I know it wont be right unless I find one. Throttle bypass valve, who's got one, the dealer maybe ?

Here is some info I found on wikipedia Five Speed transmissions T71G Gear Ratios: 1st 3.666 2nd 2.157 3rd 1.266 4th .885 5th .725, Rev 4.100 Usage: 1975-1982 Subaru Leone T71G Gear Ratios: 1st 3.636 2nd 2.157 3rd 1.266 4th .885 5th .725, Rev 3.583 Usage: 1983-1989 Subaru Leone 1600cc T81G Gear Ratios: 1st 3.371 2nd 1.950 3rd 1.266 4th .885 5th .725, Rev 3.583 Usage: 1983-1989 Subaru Leone 1800cc (EA-81 Engine ONLY)! This seems to suggest that the same T71G 5 speed went (with one revision) with EA-71 from 1975-1982 then on thru to 1983-89 EA-71's ? But it says the T81G 1983-1989 for 1800 fits ea-81 only...anybody know what will swap ?

Thanks for the info guys ! So a "fat case" gen 2 ea-81/ea-82 bell housing with side mount starter will fit the gen 1 (pre 1980) ea-71. So that would mean instead of me being limited to 1976-79 or so 5 speed I could use later a ea-81/ea82 5 speed if I change the bell housing ? Can I put any ea-81/ea-82 5 speed in it if I swap the bell housing ? Would the flywheel, clutch, petal assembly from a ea-81/ea-82 swap into a ea-71 engine with the new bell housing ? What model years ea81/ea82 would swap ? Thanks a million for the information, I used to know all this swap stuff about beetles, I worked on them for years when they were everywhere (1200,1400,1600, 1800 not too different), thin stud, thick stud, single port, dual port ect.,ect., but Subaru is new to me ! I wish I still had my 56 Beetle, 40 horse and would go anywhere, it was a TANK, a lot like this DL . Thanks again

It seems finding a 5 speed with a top mount starter might be a trick, from what I gather it has to be pre 1980(gen 1 top mount starter) and there are not a lot of pre 1980 1600 models with front drive and the 5 speed. Seems to limit me to pre 1980 and post 1600 so about 1976-1979 ? There were a couple of earlier 1400 models that came with front drive 5 speeds (like GL's) but would a 1400 5 speed trans swap with gen 1 auto 1600? The carb is OK, but not getting good mileage really, it idles perfect but I think needs a rebuild, driveability should be much better, seems a little sluggish/slow. It will get up and go if you floor it (and shift it), but mid throttle is weak. I'll know more when I put some tune up on it, a valve adjust, plugs and a timing light. Any info would be great. Thanks !

After a few days driving, all is good but the carb looks like it is in original condition...so that's a clue ! I took off the air cleaner and tried to adjust the carb, no go. The idle air mix is turned all the way in and wont lean out, there is gasket material oosing out of the carb into the venturi, it looks like the Blob..(that can't be good), carb gaskets/seals are maybe about 30 years overdue for replacement/rebuild ? a carb kit is on the way. The auto trans shifts into 3rd at about 20 mph if you don't floor it ! Is there any adjustment in the kick down linkage that would change the shift points ? It's a Shift-o-Matic as it is, if you manually shift from 1st to 2nd at 20-25mph, (instead of shifting into 3rd at 15-20 mph in automatic), then shift from 2nd to 3rd at 40-45mph it moves along pretty good even with the crusty carb. (I don't plan on keeping the automatic any longer than I have to anyway, I will swap to 5 speed asap). Also going to do a valve adjustment with the carb rebuild. I was expecting to see a points distributor, but it has an electronic dist. I might post a video of it running and driving before and after a good tune up, should be interesting. I love the suspension on this thing, its solid as a rock ! Thanks for the great Subaru forum !

Can somebody point me to a thread to swap a manual trans into a front drive automatic ? The auto just doesn't suit me, I'm a 5 speed guy. Also, I think I need a good old carb/clean rebuild, I'm pretty sure everything is gunked up. Drives good , but could be much, much better I think. A 30 year old carb always has lots of junk in it, a rebuild would do wonders. Going to get a carb kit at rock auto. I thought it would have points, but it has electronic distributor, so performance issues are surely with the carb I think. Thanks !

My car, 1979 DL front wheel drive auto. I do have a couple of questions about the transmission and maybe a swap, I mean the auto trans works but I dont really expect it to last like I need so I would rather have a manual, 4speed at least, would prefer 5 speed , and even better a 5 speed D/R trans Is it possible ?. I have searched this forum but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. First question, will later 3AT front drive automatics fit the first gen 3AT ? I know they made a few variations of the 3AT but do they swap with the 1st gen ? Next question is can I put a 5 speed manual in my 1st gen front wheel drive auto, and which 5 speeds/petal assemblies/flywheels/ ect. would interchange, would a dual range 5 speed be possible with front wheel drive only ? Thanks for any info you can give !

78k 1978 DL Wagon I just got last night...
junk250 replied to Sickly's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
WOW its almost Identical to mine, sweet car ! I'm having a blast driving mine. -
Thanks, It's not pristine, but for a 33+ year old car not too bad at all. Grandpa put a few dents in it, and it has the body leak I need to find, but overall pretty nice I think ! The motor purrs like a kitten, you can barely hear it running at idle, and I haven't tuned it up yet, when you hit the highway its purring a little louder. I doubt its had any service lately, I'm sure it will run even better with a valve adjust, new points, plugs, carb adjust, ect. I purchased from estate of original owner, @ 57,100 miles.

This is my new 1979 DL, and my first Subaru. I have only had it 4 days and it already broke down LOL, turned on key and nothing, no dash lights/no crank nothing. Checked lights and nothing but flashers worked, no headlights but battery was up. Took me 5 minutes to find the ignition wire from the battery was broken, now good as new . I posted in the wrong forum(parts only) that is has a slight water core leak (I knew that but I bought it anyway, I'm a glutton for punishment I guess), and it had a ton of water(not antifreeze) in pass side floorboard. Haven't took the time to look into that, too busy Subaruin' all over town and sippin' gas ! Has obviously been garage kept its whole life, so I'll have to figure out the water leak. There is absolutely NO RUST , even under the wet carpet is rust free, so I guess first time sitting outside a garage ? I forgot to say, everything works, all dash lights, front and rear wiper/washers, A/C, dome light, even the power antenna ! It took a while to figure out what that switch did, I'd flip the switch hear a little sound, flip it the other way and hear it again, who knew, it has a friggin' power antenna for an AM radio ! Anyway on to the pics,

I got it home, I didn't want an auto trans but it works OK I guess. Has a slight heater core leak, I knew that. It ran super smooth and quiet, but detuned, slow hills ect., I think I can fix that. A little tune up might do the trick. Still puzzled about the wet floorboard, not antifreeze, so a body leak I guess. There is sure a big difference in an auto and a 5 speed, auto gets 23/29 mpg, the 5 speed gets 40 mpg highway ! Drove it hard the 40 miles home and it was barely warm, defiantly no overheating problems. Might not have a thermostat installed. Only 58,000 on odometer. I need 5 speed goodies for it !
