  1. Thanks for the input. I will have more time this weekend to get into the engine and behind the valve covers to check it out. I'll report my findings here and see if I can't get a fuel pump, also. Not engine/carb related, but since this is on the topic of parts, what would also return better results for brake components? My front brakes are destroyed and I'd like to do new rotors/pads, but alas no rotors anywhere and pads seem to be iffy. 4x140 is an oddball size.
  2. No, sir. It is an aftermarket dual-barrel Weber carb. The pump (after the fuel filter in the engine bay), appeared to be leaking from the seals on the body. The hoses, themselves, appeared to be pretty dry, and noticed no holes or tears. I have removed the pump and am trying to see if I can find an OEM replacement (I've noticed I cannot find OEM-anything with this car). Otherwise I imagine a cheap electric inline pump would work fine?

  5. Hey all. I just wanted to bounce some things off some of the more senior Subaru mechanics and get some ideas. Here's the skinny: Stock ea71 motor. Subaru was running okay, then one day was having problems accelerating from a stop/idle, and then eventually having problems starting. The acceleration problem apparently was the fuel filter. After replacing that, the acceleration problems never occurred again. Now, truck has a real hard time starting. Starter turns and cranks the engine, and when I Take the filter off the carb (Weber) I can see fuel getting dumped into the manifold. Pulled plugs and cyl 1+3 looked rich, but not wet. Cyl 4 was rich AND wet, and Cyl 2 was lean, with a ton of buildup on the plug. Checked plug wires, all looked normal except Cyl 2. The connector was corroded and rusted out, and transfered to the connection on Cyl 2 spark plug, as well. Additionally, I noticed when in operation, or trying to turn on the fuel pump (in the engine bay) leaks like a siv. The carb IS getting fuel, and it obviously does turn on, but I'm not sure how much fuel I'm losing through that thing. Looks like I will need to tune the carb, perhaps do a compression check, and then from there see if I need to look at the piston rings/valves. Anything I'm missing, or should take a look at? Seems like it's gotten a lot worse since it's cold now. Please keep in mind this is my first "project" car, and also my first carburetor vehicle I've ever really worked on that was "mine", so I'm fairly green on the classics, and would love some advice. Thanks in advance.
  6. I don't trust anything from HF, but some tools that are lightly used or have little in the way of their mechanically moving parts I will buy there. The 1/2" breaker bar from there works great. I can get huge leverage with that on some stubborn bolts. I have nicer ones for cranking engines or for racheting, but the HF one is great for just getting gorilla on something. They have some pliers that you just can't find anywhere. Not sure what they are actually called, but I call them "hose grip pliers" Great for getting those stubborn hose lines off. They are toothed pretty sharp and have torn a few hoses with them, so using them a lot finally wore them a bit to where they didn't instantly tear through everything. Great tools for working on cars. And they're pliers. Aside from being super stiff because Chicago tools are built shoddy and not well lubricated, they work quite well. Impact sockets. Built well, work well. Not much to say here. They're cheap and work with the breaker bar. Especially when working on a friend's car who takes their stuff to a shop that uses impact drivers on wheels that are at about 1000lbs/ft. <sarcasm> :/ Stuff I've found to be UTTER crap from HF: Hose clamps. NEVER use their hose clamps. Complete garbage. Couldn't get one to stay on without breaking, and if you did get one, I would definitely not trust it. Test lights and multimeters. Crap. Spend an extra 10 or 20 on something that works. 2 of my three test lights failed out of the box and the third one didn't make it 4 months. As a matter of fact let me throw in anything electrical. Even their spade connectors must be made from rocks as I can't really get good current through them. Air compressor. I purchased a little one to take around with me, the types that roll on two wheels and are horizontal to the ground. I ensured the thing was oiled and cleaned regularly... But all it takes is to tip that thing over one time and the air filter completely broke off. It's plastic, and all of the housing was completely shattered. I didn't drop it off a truck it just tipped over on it's side. Very cheaply made (obviously). You just have to stick with pure metal with little moving parts at HF and you're usually okay. Other than that don't trust it.
  7. Hey guys, sorry! I am pretty busy on my local car club forum and haven't really been on here as much as I'd like (or working on my brat, as much as I'd like). Other than the issues I've stated above there was some nasty rust in the wheel wells of the bed, from what i've seen is pretty common. I've cut it out and will be welding in the scrap plate this weekend. Here's a photo of the truck and car.
  8. Hi guys. I have been trolling the forum for a few weeks as I was searching for an older Subaru picking up some advice from the posts already given. I currently own a '06 Sti which I purchased new off the lot with a whopping 3 miles on it, and have been taking care of her ever since. It's been a wonderful ride. I just recently picked up my 2nd Subaru, and 1st "classic" a 79 BRAT, so I'm here to learn a few things and see if I can't put her back into proper running order. The BRAT has the notorious shifter slop which I am trying to fix by fab'ing my own bushings however I also noticed (after I took her home) that there's a slight leak coming from the transmission where the linkage goes in. Probably a seal, I am guessing. I will peruse the forums some more to see if I can't find a cause/fix for this but in the mean time I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello. So. "Hello".
