I drive on the highway for work, 1000 miles a week. My mid 80's Loyale wagons and now my 2nd. Legacy (with winter blades) does the same thing- wiper arm lift above 70mph. I've bent arms and gone to a 16 inch drivers winter blade, BUT IT STILL LIFTS, on windy days, forget it, the arm barely skims the glass. In the summer I use a trico blade with a wing (Like all German cars have!!!). If I could only find a stronger spring. Liek i said, this is the 4th Subaru that i've had that did this. Here in Buffalo I gotta use a winter solid blade till March. AQm I the only one experiencing this? I've checked on getting "wings" off of german cars in the junk yard, but they all need a rivot hole in the arm, and that would cause the subaru arm to break.

first of all an outback will not be as trouble free (headgaskets?) as a well kept 2.2l. My buddy is a Subaru mechanic at the local dealer, headgaskets on high mileage 2.5's are a frequent repair, almost unheard of on 2.2's. My 2.2 has over 330,000 on it with no engine problems , ever. Then there are piston slap issues etc. To someone used to other cars, hondas, toyotas, GMs, fords, chryslers this is a normal thing over 150,000, others even less. just be forewarned that the odds are higher for the 2.5 compared to the 2.2. For someone like me who drives 1000 miles a week, keeping a 2.5 past 150,000 is not recommended. When I replace my 93 I will do so with another 2.2. just my 2 cents.

you mean that there are still reliable 2.2's up to 97 (automatic, non outback, legacy wagons). I thought that the 2.5's took over. If i can still find a 97 with a 2.2, automatic and a wagon, I'll look as late as 97. there is an ebay dealer listing a 99 legacy wagon with a 2.2 that's an automatic. Was there such a thing? at least I know that I can look as late as 97. Anyone out there know for sure? thanks again

I'm a regular poster here, My 93 legacy wagon just hit 328,000 without ever having the engine apart (just timing belt stuff). I DO NOT want a 2.5l, no way will they last this long without a bunch of head gaskets..... I've seen differing opinions on when the last 2.2 l legacy auto was made. An outback would be nice, but I keep all my subarus till over 300k and I don't think this head gasket stuff can be avoided with that kind of mileage (I drive 1000 miles a week). It seems that my choices are limited to a 95 legacy at the latest in order to get a 2.2l automatic. Is this correct? There are 96 and 97 brightons, but I don't think they are 2.2's. Am I correct in avoiding the 2.5's from 95 and 96 and 97? there are a bunch of Outbacks for under 6 grand in the autotrader web page, but I don't think they can hold a candle to my 93's reliablity. We are talking having it last to 400,000, which i have gotten on another 2.2 and am on my way with my current 93. AM I WRONG.... thanks I'm kinda leary about getting a pre 98 outback with 150,000 and under. this kind of mileage on a well kept 2.2 is nothing, at least with my experience. FEEDBACK please.. this 2.5 reliability vs. 2.2 reliability seems to have some substance

I could live without the lights, the mrs. was bitchin about it. Took about 2 hrs. gave me a chance to vacuum 10 years of crud outta there, how it got in???????? Having a 2.2l with 328,000 miles I gotta keep it running, those 2.5l's are junk I hear when it comes to head gaskets, since I've gotten over 300k on each 2.2 I've owned, I'll look for a low mileage 2.2 when need be.

well my 93 2.2 has 230,000, with no engine problems and 10 Buffalo, NY salty winters. All this head gasket talk has me thinking NO OUTBACK or 2.5 when it comes time for a replacement. What a bummer, for someone who has always had 200,000+ mile engine trouble-free subarus, this sounds as bad as owning a ford or chrysler. What is the real scoop? Should I only look at used 2.2 legacies (up to what year?) Outbacks, seem definately out of the question if the darn thing is gonna need that kind of work by 200,000. Spoiled, you bet....

My 93 legacy has 327,000 and is still going strong. After all that I have read here about 2.5"s forget it. When it comes time to replace my current legacy, HG replacement at 100k will not do. What years were 2.2's still around after 93 and in what models. thanks I may even look at other makes. For someone who has had subarus past the 300,000 mile point many times, this HG BS on 2.5's will not do.

I didn't pay for the alternator and other wires, they were swapped from another legacy. PROBLEM GREATLY MINIMIZED: don't know what the cause is but a 5 dollar choke from radio shack spliced into the powerline to the radio got rid of 90% of the whine. Seems something was getting through the system (even off) and was interfering all the way up to the speakers. Definately some sort of interference that was not there before, with no new items installed!!!

it's an electriacal whine type noise only when the engine runs, even if the radio is off. Changes with rpm and sounds like a classic case of bad wires, even though 2 new sets were put on. Since I drive 1000 miles a week it's driving me nuts. It's louder when the lights or fan ac are on. but with everything off and the engine on, it's still there. It's not a whistle or leak.

my 93 legacy wagon has 325,000 on it without any engine problems ever. All this 2.5 talk about headgaskets is making me think "non-subaru' when it comes time to get another used vehicle in the future. I was thinking of getting a used 2.5 with 100,000 or so, but I doubt it after reading about these headgaskets. I planned on getting a used 100,000er hoping to have something as reliable as my 2.2. seems that isn't the case, am I wrong?

I have a chance to get 4 tires and rims for my 93 awd automatic legacy, 2 are almost new the other 2 look only about a 1/4 way to the wear bars worn. I don't have the chance to measure circumference, they are the proper 185/70x14 size. If I get them will they screw up my tranny? looking at them standing there is no or almost no discernable size difference. Thanks
