  1. Is this a turbo EJ205 or a N/A SOHC EJ201,202,203? You can swap USDM 2.5 SOHC cams into a 2.0L SOHC engine, yes that will work. They are not much different though.. What you need to do is swap the crank pulley and the drivers cam pulley and then they will read right
  2. Fwiw, ilco blanks are the only blanks that work in Subaru. Hillman access plus don't seem to ever work. I cut them at work with a Hillman automatic machine and 90% of the time those keys come back.. My Subaru dealer carries ilco blanks.
  3. I used a professional style siphon pump, made by Sampson. Had an air powered pump. Cost like $1,500 for the whole setup and when it came down to it the thing was a POS. Oil had to be HOT for it to work any kind of quick, thick Diesel oil, forget it. Oil changes would take 40 mins with it... And that is something made for the job
  4. Not to get into an argument either, but the 10% rule is widely accepted. It's in owners manuals, it's recommend by trailer manufactures, it's just pretty common knowladge. some people will even recommend more than 10%, but 10% is common math. Hitches rated for say 5,000 lbs will have a 500 lbs tongue weight rating.. Once you start pulling weight off the hitch to make your tow vehicle tow it, is when you CAN start to get into trouble. If your experienced and can make it work, have the flat terrain to tow on, then yea go for it if you feel comfortable.. But to suggest that to someone who may not be experienced is liable to get someone in a wreck or hurt. it's just bad advice.. I've SEEN the aftermath around here in the hills, too small a tow vehicle, no tongue weight and an inexperienced driver. The trailer will toss the smaller vehicle on it's side before you can think about catching it This was at top of Google, just for example http://auto.howstuffworks.com/auto-parts/towing/towing-capacity/information/tongue-weight.htm
  5. 2.2 is single cam, that Gen 2.5 is dual cam. Might be 1 tooth out of time. That swap is as common as sliced bread and has no ill effects
  6. my rough math would put it at 11.5:1 compression, a bit extreme.. No need to split the case, there are access holes for the pins.
  7. To clear it up for future readers... Tongue weight should be 10% of your total trailer mass to keep it from swaying. Run it too light, and you probably can't catch it once it starts wagging, and that can even flip a vehicle over.. To put a 3,500 lb car on a trailer, you would need 400 lbs on the tongue. With a hitch rated for 200 lbs... Don't do it. Pulling a little weight off the tongue would be ok, to move trailers or loads around a property, or very slowly. Emergency situation only, and then just call AAA
  8. If a trailer is big enough for trailer brakes, its too big for a Subaru. The Subaru is like most cars. If you have no truck. It is suitable to tow a utility trailer and probably 1,500 lbs safely. Once you start talking towing cars and its not An emergency situation it wouldn't be recommended..
  9. I personally wouldn't tow more than 1,500-2k lbs regularly. You might want a larger vehicle. I put tires on an old outback with a receiver adapter and a trailer brake controller. Thought of that was scary. 2k is really about the limit with the class 1 reciever. You may find class 2 hitch, but still car is small and light comparatively.
  10. Yea a jdm ej201 2.0l sohc is a direct swap and ej202 and 203 can also work.. I have a jdm ej205 turbo with trans to go in thought. Little more work and cost but, still will be cheaper than buying a forester xt or wrx that's not beat
  11. Well, I knew my Forester EJ251 was dying a not so slow death. Backfiring was getting worse and worse, lots of fuel in the oil ect... Downshifted to a big kaboom sounding backfire. Bad enough it shook the car and blew the flex pipe cat pipe I had off. Right after that, it started missing consistently. I stuck the exhaust back together and limped it to the shop.. Pretty sure the backfire damaged a valve or a spark plug. Either way, it's just coming out. I've been waiting to justify the EJ205 swap and now it's time
  12. Yup it's a smog check. There are evap emissions differences between the two which needs a workaround on a 99 ( canister under car instead of under hood. They will spot it. California inspectors are trained to be strict
  13. That changes everything. You can't use an older engine in California. Same year or newer is the rule. So you are stuck with an ej25D setup. Nothing wrong with that. The '99 being phase 2 block isn't bad at all.
  14. The answer is it depends. If they both use the same sensor pattern then you could make it work ( 6/7 or 36-2-2 ). I'm not sure what the '03 EJ251 uses. The EJ254 has AVCS so you will never get that working and you will need to match power steering lines and other things. If it's coil on plug, then you'll need to adapt plug wires and your coil
  15. I'm going to park the car right after the truck is done, and I think it'll last that long. I've been working 7 days for a month, and just today got a day off, but I don't feel like digging into it since it's not gonna matter. It STINKS when it's running and warm. Not always like oil, but sometimes just stinks, and sometimes it seems to have reduced power but not always. Always feels smooth at 55-60 mph and still provides ok gas mpg. 22-23 ballpark right now Can't wait to drop in the EJ205 though.
  16. Wrx pipe itself might not be right, but cut the pipe and just use muffler it should be the same size pipe. STI is bigger. Or it might work as is. outback and legacy are not what I normally work with.
  17. Timing belt is probably been on less than 20k miles. I'd have to check the sticker but I did all the idlers and a new tensioner when I did it. Pcv was new not long ago. I doubt hoses are MIS routed. Have not had a chance to check comp or plugs but plugs were ok when changed last.. I don't think running without cats will peg the air fuel ratio. Its been like that since last fall.
  18. If you have a UEL in place right now, get a factory turbo muffler from a WRX or FXT. They will be louder in the N/A engine but not too loud, and the UEL will give you the Subie Rumble.
  19. And now, dissapearing oil. Seemed to have lost 3 quarts in 100 miles, and other than a constant oil smell, it's pretty dry
