  1. your best bet is a wrecked 2002-2007 wrx. Take everything including the EJ205 and trans, swap it over.. To get a turbo going on an old ecu, it takes a piggy back controller which has to force open loop under boost. This can trigger an engine light so it may not pass an emissions scan like what ny does. An aftermarket ecu wont work at all. Theoretically you could use a later model wiring harnesss but you could not run the 22e heads, you would need 251 or 253 heads and intake which should work.. It would be most cost effective tho to buy a wrx
  2. Hondas and Subaru are common to use those clips. They don't do much more than keeping the cable from moving
  3. shock towers on either car are huge. It would probably work if their height dimensions were right. Still have the rear to think about but I can probably come up with a different suspension for rear if needed.
  4. Live in the rust belt. Lots of old Subies rusted to the doors with great engines and transmissions, I like Subaru's, love the way they run and handle, but finding a solid one is near impossible.. What I have always wanted is a classic car as a daily driver. I sold my last classic, a '51 Chevy to fund some of my GF's expenses on getting her WRX.. The car was a borderline driver so while I miss it, I don't miss it.. What I would like to do is get something like a '60-'63 Ford Falcon, or even a similar year Nash/AMC Rambler American and put a full EJ drivetrain in it. The EJ22E's run about equal hp to the old 6cyls, and a 5spd with AWD would be killer.. I know that the subframes unbolt and could be re fitted to another unibod9 y or frame easy ( I'm a self tought fabricator ) but I dont know what to do about struts.. Any way to run a conventional A arm on top with springs? I'm thinking like a '96-'98 Legacy 2.2L. A wrecked WRX would be a dream, but for a driver an EJ22E will do. The cars are about the same size as a Legacy and have simmilar track widths I would also convert to 5x114.3 to use standard Ford/AMC/Mopar 5 lug wheels
  5. 205 55 16 is a pretty common optional size on imprezas. Its the base size for the pre 08 wrx
  6. carbons gritty, and a cold engine makes carbon. Cold engines wear more.. Chevrolet turned the SBC, an engine that used to be pooched after 100-150k miles into a 200 plus engine. They did it by running the engines at 212* and low tension rings and fuel injection
  7. the donut right? I think for the rear connection, ill pull the rear hanger off the muffler , loosen the bolts and tighten them back up. I'm thinking it will center and all hangers will fit.. I shouldn't need new spring bolts tho right?
  8. you got to find a shop that charges $60-70 that will take the job. Most wont. I have a shop local who I normally use for jobs I dont have tools or time for who wont even do a clutch because he looses on big jobs
  9. there's conflicting info on the donut gasket. Should it be omitted in favor of flat gasket?
  10. I put on an exhaust on my friends car today. Its a stock 2004 wrx. She just wanted more rumble. Its an N1 clone catback. Cost $130 so I expected some issues, but it fits good actually. The kit came with 4 bolts and 2 nuts. I omitted the original spring bolts since they broke anyway and the kit seemed to not require them. It came with 2 flat gaskets. The downpipe connection had a concave area for donut gasket so I used the donut gasket. It was still really good.. When we fired it up, it was slightly leaking from that connection, but it was solid and quiet enough for now. She wanted to go for dinner so I just pulled the jacks and off we went. what should I do to stop leak? The system went in fine. One mis alligned hanger bracket causes everything in the rear to be off enough bolts wont clear the rear connection so its only hanging by one of the muffler hangers until I can adjust the rods position with a torch. But that's the only issue and its a small one. It still has 3 hangers fully seated
  11. few really know subarus. An engine swap by the book should be less than 5hrs labor. I can't remember but 3hrs flat rate?.. This is about $300 but a Subaru shop can charge what he wants because few really know how easy they really are. A shop willing without a clue may take a day, that would be $1k
  12. just tow it. Those single axle motorcycle haulers, I dont think brakes to fit the axles are even available. Trailers less than 3,500 lbs are not required to have brakes. You can tow 2,000 lbs and leave yourself some distance to the next car. Nobody's gonna stop u, its perfectly legal.
  13. not sure why Subaru used them in that place. I need some for wrx skid plate. Previous owners used zipties and I don't like it. I might put captive nuts in instead
  14. $750-1000 is where you can be on that and be fair. 300k miles will be a hard sell to the un knowing
  15. does not seem so. Forester 2.5 intake gaskets are showing for 2004-13 Forester only. no others, suggesting the intake manifold and heads are different than any other. Unless the electronics are the same, they are deffinetly different engines and are not a direct swap
  16. 195 55 16 should be equal to a stock 195 65 15. I didn't run a calculator but it should be close.
  17. I planned on replacing water pump, tensioner and idlers. That's what I've done in the past. I've read the tensioner can be overkill, but it's cheap insurance.. Still, I'm used to non interference 2.2L
  18. 2004 WRX EJ205. 140k miles, bone stock except some gauges in the old clock area, not even an aftermarket air filter. 2nd owner bought it last year from original owner with 120k miles and now just wants something auto. Timing belt was supposed to be done, but theres no paperwork showing it, so I figure I'll stick a new kit w/ water pump on it and not worry. Few hundred is cheap insurance that it's not gonna cost thousands. I'm used to old EJ22E's, and basically just use Gates kits when I do them, but I have never touched a WRX before.. Are there any ins and outs to a car that 'lives' above 3k RPM like a WRX? We may do some stuff to it, but for the most part it will remain stock.. I've read of a Parrin crank sprocket. Is that something thats a good upgrade? This is now a very good friend of mines car. Going with her to get it on thursday. For the record, this is about the cleanest un tinkerked with WRX that I have ever seen.
  19. find a Toyota Cressida. Basically an ugly 4dr Supra. They are a low buck drift car and they are still affordable.
  20. Pink car fell thru. it had title issues that a bank would not sign a check to ( out of state title not in actual owners name ). She was really upset so I took off work yesterday and we just kinda drove downstate while checking CL and found an absolute GEM.. a Bone stock 2004 WRX. stock exhaust, rims, intake. no tuner ect. 140k miles and drives like brand new, no rust and well kept. New brakes, VC gaskets ect.. also a 2 owner car... It also had a lot of parts that were missing on the other that I did not know of.. So were in agreement that shes gonna get dirty and were gonna build it. It's the perfect car. we pick it up thurs
  21. bringing this back to top. She found one, we went and looked and its diamond in the rough. Solid rust free car from PA, bone stock. Just has a bov noisemaker and aftermarket wheels. 146k and a new clutch. Owner bought it to repaint and keep for himself but found one he liked better.. Its hello kitty pink, so this car is also dirt cheap. Its an 04 2.0l 5spd.. The trans is tight with no noises, clutch feels great, suspensions responsive.. Passed everything I looked for, so we will go for this one and then ill go thru it more when she gets it home. New brakes, oil change and that kind of thing..
  22. yup you could do that. Let the engine die on the mystery oil. Let it sit, and then fire it up after a few mins. It will start hard keep in mind. Its one of the original uses of marvel mystery oil. And MMO is one of the oldest additives
  23. well I ended up with something totally different. Could not get the Subaru dealer to deal on my truck so I went back to where I bought it. They had a 2010 2.5x 30k miles, loaded without leather for $20,995 and the numbers should have worked. But they said it wouldn't and would not even try. I was pressed for time since I had already requested hold on the truck payment so i didn't have to pay it.. Ended up with the only car they said would work, and I know its just the one they could make the most on. But it is a nice car. Its a 2014 Ford Fusion SE. Loaded with leather and everything. More gizmos than ill ever use. It wont launch the boat, so for now I can borrow a truck from a friend. But ill probably buy a blown up Forester and drop a used engine in
  24. put some marvel mystery oil thru the brake booster line. When it does, it cleans up a burned valve and makes it seat for a while. I had a 1965 rambler that had burned valves and it made it drivable.. You could also put some 2 stroke oil in the gas but that's hard on the catalytic converters
  25. I work in a WalMart TLE. If even a quarter is on the carpet. I decline vacuum simple as that. Its very serious to me, but to some workers, they don't get paid enough not to be tempted I'd guess.
