  1. .I'm trying to get her to test drive an Impreza, since $13k would go a long ways. She has never driven an Impreza but regularly drives a 2010 legacy that she borrows from her mom. Whatever she gets has to be a 5spd, her requirements since she looks past any auto wrx. I think an Impreza would treat her well for many years. She wants me to help her look, since I know how to work on subarus. Older ones at least.
  2. actually, I have ridden with her and she does not speed, does not text and always buckles up. If there is one young girl with the respect and responsibility to drive a high hp car like that, its her.
  3. when I did my 22e swap. I just got the right size heater hoses and made a large loop with both hoses. Worked fine
  4. her first car was an Audi A4 Quattro so, she's stuck on a turbo. Even tho the quattro would be equivlant to a mid 90s Lego turbo in hp terms. I found a one owner stock adult owned 04 for $16k with 70k miles I know that an RS with a nice exhaust burble would satisfy her, but she doesn't know it.. She plans on driving like a grandma with it but wants something to be proud of. Kind of the same reason I bought a 2011 F250 diesel. Its what I wanted so I found a way to get one
  5. the new WRX is way out of her price range. I was originally thinking sensibly that a $5-7k Impreza could be bought, driven and upgraded, but the cost of building a turbo. motor and making it run would be cost prohibitive. There is financing involved, but even a non running car or one that needs work can be financed as long as title is good. I was thinking buy the $5k wrx, get $3k extra financed and she would have a nice wrx. That's if an engine can be done for $2-3k. I asked about a forester xt but she does not like suv type vehicles... I guess she just might have to find the unmolested wrx and get the cash/ financing. The project part came with an idea of saving money
  6. we were talking last night and, she's kinda got me convinced that starting with an Impreza is not the best idea. She found a couple nice ones with blown motors from turbo issues. She doesn't want to put more in it than she can buy one for, which makes sense. But how much could building a new engine cost? Could an NA engine run in a wrx so she had something to drive who turbo motor is built? She's open to the ones needing work, but ones complete that she likes are in the 04-6 range and 13-20k and most are far from Stock
  7. that's an 8 bolt trans on a 4 bolt engine, so it should just fit. The patterns are the same but the 8 bolt has 4 extra. Doesn't matter. My guess is they want to sell a trans. An older trans to a newer engine requires a bolt hole drilled for starter
  8. friend of mine is looking for a nice WRX on a cheap Impreza budget. I found a gorgeous 2003 WRX with some aftermarkets and a little over 100k miles for $13k but i kno it would be a stretch to finance being so old.. I got her thinking on just buying a manual Impreza and we will slowly turn it into a tribute WRX as funding comes around. She's not sold on that totally. She wants the turbo even tho she says she's gonna baby it. I'm thinking of putting a turbo engine together using take off WRX parts and limit boost to 5-8 psi, just enough to make it fun.. But I don't know about engine management. I know if i was doing a 90s Impreza, I would use an EJ 22e with 25D heads or an EJ251 with the 25D heads if the compression would end up right with piston selection. I have a complete EJ25d engine so I have the heads. I even know where a mid 90s Impreza is that is solid but parked non running which way should I suggest to go with this. I kno the 90s would need a piggy back ecu, but that's it.
  9. It's a remove and replace deal. If you get a '96+ EJ22 then you need the Y pipe but it's not a huge deal, just 2 bolts and an extra gasket to buy.. I would get a '95-'96 EJ22E from an automatic ( has EGR ). They are non interference motors and have HLA rockers so they are dead reliable
  10. I would not install an EJ25D, JDM or otherwise. EJ22E only.. You could drill and tap the cylinder head for the EGR but you would still need an EGR intake manifold and wiring harness with the EGR plug.. With an EGR intake manifold you could also tie the EGR valve into one of the hoses on the back airbox and that would keep the CEL off The 4 bolt engine will fit the 8 bolt trans. I have done it and it's a very common swap
  11. Yes and no.. The 4 bolt JDM 2.2L will fit and work with the 8 bolt SUS transmission. The bellhousing patterns match and the engine would hook up and run with the EJ25D harness.. The JDM's do not have EGR so if you live in an inspection state where the CEL cannot be on then it will not pass without an EGR manifold and some trickery.. If you want a bolt and go reliable engine. A 1995-1996 EJ22 from an automatic Legacy would have the EGR and fit and run just like the JDM.. My '99 SUS has a '96 EJ22 in it. You need to install the flexplate from the EJ25 on the EJ22. It looks tight but it fits and works
  12. Listings are just wrong on many Subaru's. Not just junkyard parts, but aftermarkets as well.. 1999 because it was a transitional year has tons of " one year only " parts which really cover 1999-2003 in most cases. Things like the transmission part numbers changed for 2000.. It's not like my 1995 Chevy truck which is truly a one year only because it has the 'new' interior with the old TBI fuel injection and OBD-1, so things like the gauge cluster is different tho it looks just like the 1996-1998
  13. Tires are not expensive in relative terms.. A $ 400 set of tires that has a moderate lifespan of 30k miles only costs $0.013 cents per mile... Nobody does math like that for tires, but it doesn’t lie. As for measuring a tire to see if they can be run on an AWD, just go by a $3 depth gauge and take 3 measurements across the tread. That will only work if brands/ model is a like model, but if they are mismatched you could still look at the OEM specs to compare and then measure nominal thread depth and determine a circumference difference by subtracting how many 32nds has been worn off the tire.. Personally, if I couldn't get 4 matching tires from the same set with at least 75% tread, I'd just buy new tires.
  14. Subaru OEM Roof racks and gear come from Thule IIRC.. They should have the catalogs for them right in the showroom somewhere, usually on a rack.
  15. I Think that ALL 1999 SUS's were Limited trim, but not all were 30yr anniversary I read somewhere that the 30yr cars all had black interior, 2 tone paint but not any color selection.. I think black or white made up the 30yr cars, and they had a badge that says 30yr on the front fenders.. My '99 SUS is white/ charcoal 2 tone limited trim, with the 30yr badges. Legacy SUS was replaced by the Outback sedan ( same thing ) in 2000. Not really anything rare about it other than the one year only name
  16. E-Trailer as well as others have trailer harnesses that are plug and play. Looks rated to 2k lbs to me. http://www.cars101.com/towing.html
  17. Yep. If I just did the engine swap and stopped there, I would have been out $500+ time... Still the head gaskets on the EJ25D typically runs 150k miles to the time when they blow for the first time, so if the car really has 30k KM on it, than your good for a long while, or at least another 50k if it failed 'early'.. The timing belt would be on my list as it's past due if original, but they are general maintenance. Acura has one too, and I would do the Acura's if you did not have a service record for it also.... All in all, they are 2 very different cars. Depends on really if you want the status car ( Acura ) or the practical car ( Subaru ).. My brother bought a Civic with barely 100k miles and it puked the transmission a week after he bought it, so they all can fail. The filler neck issue is common. My '99 SUS is missing a large section of the filler neck now. Replacement part is about $150 + the sensor if it's bad.
  18. Consider this. If the head gaskets blow, the engine should be pulled to do them on an EJ25D anyway.. You could drop in a '95-'98 EJ22E only needing to change the Y pipe on the exhaust ( and only if '96-'98 engine is used ) and make sure the engine you get has an EGR.. The 2.2L has 30 less HP but is pretty much bulletproof and a common swap for EJ25D's.. I have an EJ22 swapped '99 SUS.. I bought the motor and did a full service on it for less than a grand, rather than do the same to the orig 25D, but the 2.2L really could have been installed as is.. I did the install myself tho As far as the EJ25D head gaskets, engine should come out to get enough clearence tho I have heard they can be done in car ( it's probably faster to yank engine in the long run ). Water pump and timing belt are usually done at the same time.. Really not a big deal to engine R&R on a Subie. IIRC the dealers only get a flat rate 45 mins for remove, and 45 mins for install..
  19. Yes and no. If it's an automatic, than it does have an electric clutch that regulates the power going to the rear tires.. Manuals have a viscous coupling which does the same thing.. If you get a flat tire, your supposed to put the right size tires on the front, and put the FWD fuse in, and then you have forced FWD.. There is no switch you need to flip for AWD. It's always there
  20. no, right behind the tire, there are 2 screws holding the cover on.. The filler neck is done from the wheel well, but you will need to remove the tire for that.. You should be able to get the hoses off the filler neck without much issue. There is enough room under there. If you need to replace the hoses, you will need to lower the tank for clearance
  21. 2 screws hold the cover on.. If you don't want to take the tire off, you can get a pair of tin snips in there to cut it in half and pull it out quick. Subie should not have put them on there anyway.
  22. My tank has a split seam on a corner. Another thought.. Filler neck is the most common ( and mine is somewhat non existant too )
  23. flashing CEL is universal with the OBD II system not just Subaru and it does mean that the catalytic converter will be damaged with continued driving. Usually caused by a missfire which will almost always make a CEL flash at least a few times.
