more wiring issues
Godsmulligan replied to Godsmulligan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I know, but my last ground issue was a ground wire that had power to it because it was an open circuit. I didn't quite understand that one, but I ground it out, closed my eyes, held my breath and it fixed my problem. Now I don't know what to think about black wires with power. I checked the plug on the wiring harness, 2 hot wires 1 ground. when I connect the plug all 3 register hot. Trying to track down the relay now. I do have the wiring schematics just having a heck of a time making heads or tails out of them. yes it is a light switch and dimmer.- 16 replies

more wiring issues
Godsmulligan replied to Godsmulligan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK thanks. I think you're right on the part being for the blower. That sounds like a couple of searches I've turned up, just can't find where it plugs in. Thanks for the "common ground" tip- 16 replies

I got my fuel pump to work, now I have ran into another issue. It won't shut off. On top of that my dash lights wont dim and my heater won't work. For those of you who don't know I recently stripped the interior of my Brat to paint and now I'm reinstalling it. I had a grounding problem that was causing a lot of problems but with the help of you guys I figured it out. Now I've ran into more issues, like my fuel pump not shutting off. It worked just fine when I disconnected it. I did a search and it would seem that the most likely problem is that I connected it to the wrong plug, yet here's the plug I connected it to, same color, same wires. It's the black one on the right I'm adding these other issues because they may be related. My dash lights won't dim which is most likely a grounding problem. The only ground looking wire I've been able to find is this guy, and it's spliced into a hot wire into the back of the fuse box. Tried grounding it just in case, repeatedly blew fuses. I did convert to LED's My heater isn't working. It was working on high, but now not at all. I will admit I had the fan motor apart to check the bushings. They were in good condition. I may have screwed up when I put them back in. Right now, I'm more focused on the fuel pump. I do have this gadget that needs to go somewhere. I believe it goes here but the colors on the wires don't match up. The pink one in the center. As far as I know everything else is working. Thanks for the help.

Went to junk yard today, while I was there I checked out the brat wiring, and yes Obi Wan, that is the ground wire I'm looking for. Now I just have to figure out why it has power running to it. Yup, the black wire with the fish eye was it all along. Ooh, you're a wascally wabbit, you have vexed me to no end. Edit- END NOTE: ground out the wire and the fuel pump started working, the headlights came on and she fired right up. Just had to ground it out before the power started flowing to it. Is this wire hot with the key on because of power that needs to be grounded out or because there is a short somewhere? Thanks everyone for your help. I didn't even have to torch the car.

OK, I'll keep looking.

ok here's some photos... Tip: if anyone takes apart the inside like this, use a paint pin to draw a line on both the male and female connectors before you disconnect them. That way you know the connectors that were connected, and you can match up the lines to see which one goes to which. Captain Hindsight to the rescue! Is this really the only thing that hooks up from this? EDIT: nope had a bunch hiding behind fan. Behind the stereo The wires I've been hooking up to my dash cluster I don't belive this green connector hooks up to anything under the column I don't belive this hooks up to anything either Heres two wire. The one with the the fish eye is hot and blew my ignition coil fuse when I grounded it. Didn't think to check it to see if it was hot since it's black. The car does run without this hooked up, just not the fuel pump. The other one is to the speaker, I belive.
-
it's hooked up, but just sitting there. I don't think I scratched the circuit, but at this point I might tear it apart and put it back together, just to be sure. Does the cluster need to be connected for the car to start?
-
hooked up the fuse box, still no luck. Now I can't find the wire with the fish eye on it
-
Yup, Brat. Is that a black wire with a fish eye on it? I found one of those, but when I ground it out my dash lights go out. I'm thinking I have the dash lights (LEDs) in backward. That would be why they are shutting off when I turn on the headlights?
-
can't find a vacuum leak. I think it's more of a wiring thing. when I turn on the head lights the dash lights shut off, the relay starts buzzing and only the marker lights come on. It could be the relay, I'm more likely to believe I've got some wires crossed

I don't freakin know. The fuel pump is not working, the gas gauge doesn't work and the alternator gauge. They have to be tied into one another. any ideas?
-
Putting the insides back together today. I've got the gauges in and it won't start. turns over, dash lights come on, heater comes on. The gas gauge does not. So, it turns over but won't start. I'm headed back out to try and track it down. I'm sure I missed plugging some wires in somewhere.

Guess what came in the mail today? A Herculiner bed kit. I'm not sure if this is part of the gift package, or what. They did send me an email saying they were unable to participate in the comparison. I might have to get back on the line with the others or just do an extensive review of the Herculiner. Either way, I got some bed liner
-
Been a while since I've had time to work on the brat, but I've managed to get the heater back together along with all the vents. Spent the whole day painting today. Tomorrow I put it back together. I was going to take my door locks in today and get them re-keyed, because they took different keys, but when I went to leave I couldn't find my keys for the brat (cheaper to get one re-keyed to match the other). I did find my old GL Wagon key from back in the day. I thought it would be cool to get the locks keyed to match the old Subaru. I put the key in the lock, just to make sure it would fit. It did. Not only that, it turned. I tried the other lock. It worked on that one too. I now believe that my old Subaru key is the master key to all existing Subarus.

So... everyone opted out of my comparison except Al's, but since no else was in I didn't bother. Bondo did call me to inform me that they don't even make a bed liner anymore, and Mostaliner didn't bother getting back to me at all. I was going to push the matter, but my hearts not in it anymore. I can be pretty persuasive. The good news is that while on the Herculiner site, I took a survey. They contacted me and informed me that I had won a gift package, all they needed was my address. I thought maybe they were sending me the bed liner under the guise of the contest, so I said sure. It arrived today. It is not the bed liner. It is a hat, an Oakely polo, a spot light, 2 power inverters and a back up camera.

OEM 1 of 2 left in existence, I was told. $70 As far as rust goes, you should see the underside of the running boards. The wire wheel ate it's way through the metal as soon as I applied it.

Are BRATs Addictive ? I think so....
Godsmulligan replied to Sholing Uteman's topic in Members Rides
I don't have a problem. I can quit anytime I want. -
I got some painting done this week, new heater core in, dash in and some misc. Next week is all about getting the inside put back together and getting the glass in. I need to get the tarp off this thing and back on the road, so I can go camping. Oh and I took care of 3 of the 5 rust problems pictured above...
-
That's why I said I was doing the comparison for the USMB. I probably still won't get takers, but it's worth a shot.
-
Rustoleum contacted, thanks.

I have invited 4 major roll on companies to take place in a side by side comparison over the period of one year. The companies I have contacted are Monstaliner, Herculiner, Duplicolor, Bondo and Al's liner. Does anyone belive there is another "roll on" product I should include in the comparison?

Peugeot wheel paint stripping
Godsmulligan replied to ABawm 88 GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
paint stripper. they have it in rattle can and it works well on most paint. If you can wire wheel the surface first to ensure good penetration of the stripper. No pun intended -
I'm at the carpet stage, everything is torn out and I went to look at carpet before I put everything back together. Here's what I came up with. Home Depot does not carry suitable automotive carpet. If you don't care if it doesn't look like car carpet you can replace your carpet for $12. It will cost you $30-$40 to replace your carpet using roll carpet if you doing a brat, more for a hatch or wagon. there is a carpet kit for a brat, but only the front section $100 and you will still need a roll for the back section $15 Paint on bed liner $80 gallon kit, Herculiner. $150 gallon kit Monstaliner. *I was thinking about going with roll carpet, but if I go with the bed liner I can use the remainder on the brats bed subsidising the cost. Mr Loyale, I would just throw a floor mat over the hole. It will only bug you until you forget about it.
