Parting out 1986 BRAT GL
Bratmobile replied to BrattyMcBrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Really late with this post. ANy parts still available? -
I saw your reply on someone else's post regarding parts~ specifically chrome bed trim. I'm actually looking for Gen 2 tailgate trim only. My son is on vacation in Maine. Maybe he could swing by on his way home to Maryland?

Right Weber for 86 Brat?
Bratmobile replied to Bratmobile's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the input thus far~much appreciated. I've confirmed that there is an EA81 stamp on the Brat engine.Based on this, is there a link that could be provided for the purchase of the correct adapter plate? This would be for the following Weber carb: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Subaru-1985-1987-1-8L-OHC-EA82-Weber-Carb-Conversion/331100259795 Last question: For this setup, is there any clearance issue for the hood being able to fully close once the Weber is installed? Thanks again! -

Awesome~Thanks! So I'm finding Weber Carbs that will work ~if~ you get the right adapter plate. Sound correct? -
Right Weber for 86 Brat?
Bratmobile replied to Bratmobile's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So...a question that I admittedly cannot answer: What engine does my 86 Brat have? -
Will this fit my 86 Brat? : https://www.ebay.com/itm/Subaru-1985-1987-1-8L-OHC-EA82-Weber-Carb-Conversion/331100259795 Clicking the "check for fit" link it says it won't, even though this engine: "1986 Subaru Brat GL 4 Cylinders 5 1.8L 2BL" displays when doing the VIN # method of engine ID. Also this engine: "1.8L 1781CC H4 GAS OHV Naturally Aspirated" shows up for all 1986 GL, DL, Hatchbacks,Wagons ,Sedans, Coupes, ...but not the Brat(?) This displays:This part is not compatible with 1986 Subaru Brat GL Standard Cab Pickup 2-Door 1.8L 1781CC H4 GAS OHV Naturally Aspirated. Please advise. Thanks in advance!!

Engine swap for Brat.Doable?
Bratmobile replied to Bratmobile's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the quick replies! Transmission in the Outback (automatic) is shot, so just the engine. Based on the replies, it seems advised not to couple the existing Brat trans to the new engine. Correct? -
1986 Subaru Brat, hasn't run well in two years. Presently not running at all. 2003 Subaru Outback next door is for sale~ very cheap, engine is good (2.5 L 4-cylinder) Will the engine from the Outback fit in the Brat? On a scale of 1-10; Degree of difficulty to complete the swap. The pic is my son trying to convince me how cool the Brat is~

Searching a Subaru users group in Australia, I came across the following "fix" replacement part that they use on the "Brumby: Here's a link to the site: http://www.peelinstruments.com.au/index.html & here are the details of the part: CP30 Safety Switch This device is designed to turn off power to the Gas System when the engine stalls/turns off. The unit senses a Coil/Tacho pulse to provide power to the Gas System. Unit is capable of supplying an output of up to 12 amps. Unit is capable of picking up a faint pulse. Wiring- GND/NEG - Ground/Earth GAS+POS12V – Input 12 Volt power from Gas side of switch Lock Off+Pos Gas – Output 12V power to Gas Lock Off. NEG COIL - Tachometric Output Pulse/ Neg. Side of Coil. Any advice is much appreciated!~ Bratmobile

FPCU/Revolution Sensor~Help with Diagnosis
Bratmobile replied to Bratmobile's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wow~great info for me to get started with. Much appreciated! If it ain't broke you're not trying...is that a Red Green quote? -
In my hands-on efforts, and research done thus far @USMB (thank you! great content, but nothing that I can interpret as a sure thing with my limited knowledge) I have a guess as to a likely cause for my 86 Brat not starting. Here's what I can tell you so far: New battery, cables, ignition coil, fusible links. (had a no-spark issue for a while, but that's been fixed) When I chased down the no spark problem I had, I replaced the ignition coil. Once that was done the IGN fuse would blow at every attempted start. My neighbor found a short (photo with the red wire nut, next to the carb) Now with this wire disconnected the fuse does not blow and for a while the car started and ran fine for a few weeks. But eventually it would not start (turns over, but would not run) So now I've determined that the car is not getting fuel at the carburetor, and there is no sound of the fuel pump initial kicking on when I turned on the ignition, (which I could always hear before). In checking the voltage at the fuel pump when turning the key, there is nothing. Also, checking fuses, none are blown. Direct wiring of the fuel pump to the battery and it kicks right on. The two big questions: In my install of the new ignition coil (and the disconnect of the wire by the carb) if I have any wiring incorrect, could that be a cause of voltage not getting to the Fuel pump? And, is there a way to take a meter to the FPCU off of the car and determine whether it's bad? The photo gallery section has the photos as well, with brief descriptions of what is there and what I'm trying to determine. My apologies for the long-windedness. I'm hoping that there are some good explanations to this, as my lack of car knowledge has most likely caused some of my problems. Thanks in advance!

What are these relays? 1984 GL
Bratmobile replied to mkoch's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Part "A" , the Fuel Pump control unit has gone bad on my 86 Brat. Does anyone have a recommendation for a supplier? Thanks in advance~ -
A fellow Brat owner has been trying to sell his 1982 Brat for about three months now. It is in very good condition, and runs well. I would purchase it, but upkeep on my 86 brat is enough for me right now. Contact me on USMB and I will forward contact info to you of the owner. Asking $1800 Serious inquiries only please. Wants it to have a good home~

Fuel Pump~no, Something else, but what?
Bratmobile replied to Bratmobile's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wow~fuel pimp. quite the typo. Sorry about that!! -
Ok, so this is a follow on to the "fuel pimp or something else" post started a few weeks ago. After putting in a new fuel pump, there has been no change. My 86 Brat turns over (when jumped) but will not run. I have taken a lot of the advice given so far, and its much appreciated. Also just installed a new ignition coil. In checking for spark from the new coil, there still is none. Another symptom worth mentioning, it blows the IGN fuse at every attempted start up. So here is a description of the items highlighted/circled in the photo. Please let me know if anything looks amiss. Red circle: IGN coil hot side, 2 wires/one red end wire from the center disty connection, one from a harness bundle under the IGN coil; Yellow circle: IGN coil ground side, 3 wires/one yellow end wire from center disty connection, one from harness bundle (also" yellow ended) under the IGN coil, and one from "transistor" thing (circled green) mounted under IGN coil. Black circle, and blue circle are "homeless" connectors, nothing to tie them to. Any advice is much appreciated!~

Fuel issue~ Fuel pump or something else
Bratmobile replied to Bratmobile's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the help thus far~ Life is too busy to spend much time towards this~ But here's an update: No spark from the ignition coil. IGN fuse blows when attempting to start. Guessing there is a short somewhere. Not certain if there is a wiring diagram that details all connections at the ignition coil. A few nearby wires/connectors are homeless. Any diagrams/images of the correct wiring here would be much appreciated. Also, talking with my retired mechanic neighbor, he said to be sure I don't have the distributor spun 180 out. I'll be checking this soon as well. Thanks in advance! Bratmobile -
Fuel issue~ Fuel pump or something else
Bratmobile replied to Bratmobile's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fuel pump and ignition coil are both changed out for new now. I also (unnecessarily) pulled the distributor, and now that it's time to put it back in...but ... I didn't mark it's position when I took it out. I'm a novice mechanic with most repairs, so (correct me if I'm wrong). I need to get cylinder 1 on TDC and then spin the distributor to match that in the firing order. (rotor hitting the #1 cylinder in the distributor cap) Correct? Let me know if this sounds right, and if you have specific pointers to keep me from screwing this up. (Once I'm done, the hope is that my "turns over but won't start" issue will be gone as well) Thanks in advance! Bratmobile -
Fuel issue~ Fuel pump or something else
Bratmobile replied to Bratmobile's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the input thus far~ Life's been busy so I'm just now able to give an update: When turning on ignition the fuel pump sounded different than before~ a chattering/less smooth of a sound, so I changed it out for a new one. Result: Turns over but does not start, same as before. Finally took the advice given in earlier posts: Checked that the Distributor spins when attempting to start, and it does. Checking for spark at the plugs (screw driver shorting to ground method) and ...no spark. I will do some additional simple checks today (hazard/flash fuse mentioned in another no start post) If there are any other recommendations please feel free to share~ I have a new ignition coil that I'm putting in as well. I don't mind changing out some of these items as the cost and my own labor hasn't been too bad so far. Distributor might be next. Plan on hitting this hard this afternoon. Any pointers are much appreciated! -
Fuel issue~ Fuel pump or something else
Bratmobile replied to Bratmobile's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here's an update~ Fuel is not being delivered to the carb. Starter fluid into the carb makes no difference either. Changed out plugs just to be sure nothing was fouled. Spark is good, as is the distributor. Also~ when ignition is turned on( not far enough to start the car, just enough to turn on accessories) a clicking sound came from behind the drivers side under the bed. This is where I found the fuel pump and it is the source of the sound (which it never made before) My guess at this point~ replace the fuel pump. Agreed? Thanks for the input so far!~ Bratmobile Any recommendations on a fuel pump supplier? -
My 86 Brat broke down a few weeks ago & had it towed home. It turns over fine, but will not start. A few details: It had run out of gas completely a few weeks earlier. Could the debris/sediment in the tank have gotten "concentrated" because of the low fuel level and the fuel lines became clogged? Also, the night it broke down it was about 15 degrees out, so my initial thought was a frozen fuel line. Since the weather has warmed up (72 today) I've tried restarting a few times but again, turns over but does not start. Also wanted to know if there is a simple, for sure way to know if the fuel pump is bad. Obviously I'm a bit of a novice mechanic, so any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance~ Bratmobile

USMB came through helping me find other parts recently. Here goes again... I'd like to find a supplier for a complete exhaust replacement for an 86 Subaru Brat. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!~
