I'm still fighting a CEL light on my 95 Legacy Wagon too. My code is P0170. Fuel trim malfunction. I checked alldata.com and it said 1- check for air intake leak, 2- check for exhaust leak, 3- fuel pressure, 4- coolant temp sensor, 5- Mass air sensor. Before I looked at Alldata, the first mechanic said it was the front o2 sensor. I replaced it and the CEL came back the next day. About 60 miles later. Took it back to him and he said it might be the ECM. Lost confidance in him. Took it to another mechanic, he said it was the rear o2 sensor. I replaced that and it came back a couple of days later. I know it's the same code because I bought my own obd II reader. I'm going to check my fuel pressure next and if that's not it I'll probably replace the Mass air sensor. Have checked the other things the best I can and I think they are OK.

I have been fighting this CEL for 2 months now. I have replaced both o2 sensors. No help. Here's the latest. I got some info from alldatapro.com that said for a p0170 on my 95 Legacy Wagon to first check exhaust for leaks. No problem found. Then the air intake for leaks. No problem found. Then fuel pressure. I don't have a gauge so I skipped that one for now. Now to what I did find. The engine coolant temp sensor. My Haynes book says to test the resistance across the terminals with the engine cold and then when hot. The readings I got were within the range listed. So far so good. Then I am to check the reference voltage to the sensor from the ECU. It should be 5 volts. It said to disconnect the connector to the sensor and with the ignition on and the engine not running I should see 5 volts. I get 145mv. I'm sure I was making good contact. Could this be my problem? There are only 2 contacts in the connector. Could my ECU not be sending the 5 volts or could I have a bad wire between them? Car doesn't run bad. CEL just keeps coming back.

My car was made in 1/95. It has the OBD II system. -
o2 sensors

Yes. They only list 2. 1 is labeled as front oem ( has connector on) the other is front universal (you splice the oem connector on). I have found 2 placed on-line that list a rear one but it is the same part number as the front one all the other sites list. I wonder if it is just a typo on there sites. If they are the same why don't all the other sites list them that way? -

Someone has got to know the answer to this. -
The Goodyear mechanic is telling me that this p0170 fault is caused by the rear o2 sensor. The first mechanic I took it to said it was the front o2 sensor. I replaced the front one but the fault came back. I took it back to him and he thought it might be the EMC. I thought he was guessing so I took it to another mechanic. Does this second mechanic's conclusion sound right?

The first time it was in the shop he said it was running rich. He said he was sure it was the front o2 sensor. I changed the o2 sensor. He wanted $300 to put a NAPA sensor in. I got a Bosch Universal sensor for $55. Soldered the OEM plug on, 60 miles later the cel came back. Same fault code but this time he said it's too lean. He said everything looks good on the first cycle but on the second cycle all the sensors (MAF and o2) had erratic outputs. He cleared the cel, it ran good for another day or so and the cel came back. I disconnected the ECU plug, cleaned the contacts, cleared the cel and 10 miles later, it's back. Idles rough after the battery is reconnected, even after sitting and running for 20 minutes in the driveway. Drive it for 10 miles or so and it idles nice. Runs good. I just hate to see that cel. I checked the voltage to the MAF sensor and it's there. The Haynes manual says to check the output with a scan tool. I don't have one. I would think the mechanic I took it to would have done that. So far I have paid him $79 to steer me in the wrong direction. I guess I can take it to the Subaru dealer.

The mechanic thought that my cel code p0170 fuel trim problem was the o2 sensor. I changed that. Cel came back. I took it back to him and he now says that after it runs for a while all inputs from the different sensors that determine fuel mixture are going crazy on the second cycle. He thinks that the ECU is the only thing that could cause that other than a bad ground. He knows I'm not going to pay him to change it.

That's what caused the same problem with mine a few years ago. After I got it changed, no more problems.
