LuckyPistol replied to LuckyPistol's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You are exactly right Mr. Radon - ALL I ever needed was a frickin $5.50 GASKET.!!!!!! But, after coming here and reading and asking, it was SUGGESTED I go ahead and replace Oil pump, water pump, cam and crank seals, etc... This has got to be the biggest blunder I have ever done in the history of owning cars. This thing has turned into a $1200.00 + nightmare. And I feel this board for RESPONSIBLE for ALL THIS!!!! I came here looking for help, Oh, I got HELP ALRIGHT $1200.00 + and the meter is still running Help!!! Let me give some advice to the NEW PEOPLE. (OR non-mechanics) Take what this board suggests with a grain of salt. They OWE me $1200.00 ++ -
HELP - 1986 Fan Clutch...Update!!
LuckyPistol replied to LuckyPistol's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
WELL, WELL, WELL...........DAmmit.! Its been 2-3 weeks now since i picked up my car. (Have driven it less than 60-70 miles) When I picked it up, it did have this very faint sound of bearings grinding. Since they installed the oil pump (Which was causing the tick of death sound). The car sounded much much quieter, so I didn't think much about it. WELL - gradually, this bearing sound has gotten louder, and Louder, and then yesterday LOUDER.!! Full blown grinding sound!! I was so pissed. I checked all pulley to see if any were loose. All tight. I then drive it back to the same place (Yes, because they gave me 1 yr, warenty on parts and labor). Thinking they have screwed something up. The service guy looked around. He happened to check my power steering fluid , which while it was low, he filled it up, Saying "sometimes if this gets low, while make the power steering pump gring or go bad. Wel, it didn't help a lick. Still LOUD rump roast bearing grinding sound. Now, it seems that it is coming from the PSteering pump. But not sure, So he is checking it out today. I am so depressed, Because, ALL I EVER NEEDED was the frickin Oil Pump replaced. The rest of the car was perfect.!! Now, I bought all these other parts to help extend the life of my subby , and I feel its backfiring on me. What do you think it sounds like? I will update this when he let's me know what it is FOR sure. I just feel it's something they did. It's just a feeling, but we shall see. wish me luck. -
ea81 valves adjusting
LuckyPistol replied to 85glwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, I dont know what type of vehicle you have. Need more details than just 85GL. Nor am I a mechanic- I have a 1986 Subaru - and it had self-adjusting valves. Just a thought. -
HELP - 1986 Fan Clutch...Update!!
LuckyPistol replied to LuckyPistol's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok, Pick up car. I was able to get a 10% discount due to my , well, let's say questions. I did not ask to see parts. They did say that the Crank pulley was stuck and basically had to rip it out of there. All - in All, drove it all day , and it runs great. So far, I guess I am happy. Thanks for all the help. -

Wil, Dont worry I will call you .!! LOL") Boing - I wouldnt have time to take pictures of every faze of the tear down. I dont have a camera anyway. I am wondering about these bent valves. And if anyone else thinks I got ripped off...... I am sure of it, just need reinforcing -
HELP - 1986 Fan Clutch...Update!!
LuckyPistol replied to LuckyPistol's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks very much for the advice so far , very helpful- Now - I will be picking the car up tomorrow (monday) and I'll ask to see the parts in question. I didnt think a pulley goes bad, unless the mechanic really messed up. Or the Fan clutch for that matter. I had doubts when they said it would take one day, and it has turned into 4 DAYS.!! Now the last post has me really scared. Bent valves? oh man !! Shall I test drive the car before I pay the bill as well? Now, when I do, The car should run smoothly with no valve's clicking true? Now, what lead me to bring the car in was the OIL PUMP, because I do have the "tick/click of death" . So, I figure, with the new OIL PUMP , It should do 2 things: 1) No more valves clicking - (Car should run silently basically) 2) Increased oil pressure at the guage. Anything else I can do/see/listen to make sure of no "Bent Valves?" Thanks - and I will be updating. -

Oh, that was cam and crankshaft SEALS btw...... -
OK, So I take my 1986 1.8L 4 , into a local place to get MY OIL PUMP installed. I aksed this board about what else to get installed, They say water pump, timing belts, cam and crank shafts. OK< no problem. I got a few estimats before I went with this company - Around 5.5 - 6.0 hrs. to do the work OK, no problem. I settled with this comp., they were not the cheapest, and they had pleenty of mechanics. Now, they have my car for one day, call me the next day and say "Oh, the reason why your Water pump went bad, was because of the Fan Clutch". HELLO, I didnt have a problem with my water pump before I brought it in, Now, the Fan Clutch is 175.00??? Wtf? Could this be true? are they pulling my leg? And now, after 3 days working on this car, they say that the camshaft pully was bad? 160.00?? and a tensioner? 35.00?? I had NO problems before i brought this car in. I bought all my parts, just wanted them to install. Now, my bill is over a $1000 , what can I do? Please help. have they ripped me off? can I negotiate the bill? thanks

But seriously , I checked the connectors, they seem to be intact, but it's hard to really tell. I pushed, pulled, seem fine, But you know contacts are tricky.... Thanks again for all your help so far everyone. This just seems like someone would DEFINATLY know from these symptons (and you may know WJM, dont take it wrong) Are you definate? Just want to clear this up ASAP. thanks again:) -

Thanks Gary, I will check that out. Are you saying I have a idle screw adjustment on this car? Also, my idle prior to this was going up and down, up and down. It now seems to be stuck on wide open. Any more help is greatly appreciated. !! thanks again. -
Hi Everyone, Seems my problems are coming in bunches. I know this is an easy one, but wasnt sure since I have Fuel Injected 1.8L engine. Everytime I get in to drive this thing, it has been ideling at over 2600+ NON-STOP.!!! My engine sounds like its gonna blow. Also, my brakes are getting worn down to me having to push them down so hard to stop the vehicle. I know this is an easy one, I searched, didnt see anything about super-hyped up ideling problems. Please someone help me with this mystery before I back-end somebody at a light, LOL..!! BTW - 1986 Subaru GL auto , 1.8L, 155,000 miles. F.I.

I know this sounds crazy (or just me). But just recently, I get into my car, turn the key, and for about 5 seconds NOTHING !!, I then hear what I think is the fuel pump. (It makes a wmmmm, wmmmmm, wmmmm noise under the hood) Still keeping the key turned on, it will finally start. It has a range from 3-8 seconds of silence (other than the fuel pump , I think it is.) Now, I removed the battery cables, cleaned, re-connected. STILL same problem.!!! I know someone has the quick answer to this little mystery. I did a search and could not find a thing as to a pause for ignition or anything. Please help !!! I am afraid the next time i drive it, it won't start. BTW- 1986 auto, Subaru GL 1.8L engine F.I. - Battery guage says Battery is charged fine. Thanks again.

Thanks everyone so far for your responses. My oil pressure is always low (usually under 45 PSI, and at idle around zero, LOL.) Sometimes it will jump up to 65 or so, but not often. I am thinking the oil pump will fix both this and the noise. 1) Anyone know if 5.5 hrs is about the correct hrs. to do the work i mentioned above? 2) So, other than the spring, any other replacements? It's sounds like most problems will be covered when these parts are installed. My only concern now will be the surging idle !!. I have read it might be some vecious idle controls or something like that? Or could it be the timing? Any help on this mystery would be greatly appreciated. thank you:)

Also, Please explain this - I spend the night at my girlfriends, I wake up, we go to the car, I crank it up, AND, the engine purrrsss like a kitten, It lasted ALL day, driving around. I couldn't believe it, no noise, Idle is perfect, quiet valves. I dump her off at the end of the day like dirty laundry. I go home , wake up, go and crank the engine, Click, click, click, revvvingg idle. It was the first night dipping into the cold temps here , maybe that explains it. But I have noticed, sometimes, sometimes!! this comes and goes........ Please tell me I dont need to have her in the car at all times for this to happen, LOL.!!(Not that it's a bad thing, lol) She is a bit hefty, and makes the car lean to the right , maybe she is making my oil pump (or seals) work properly? Any help is appreciated.!!!! And the more threads i read, the more questions- 1) Shall I re-place the oil with sythetic? I am guessing so . But more importantly what about the Trans Fluid? Sythetic as well? thanks for all your help, I really live by this site now!! And what did happen to General Disorder? He was such a Genius it seemed............thanks again for putting up with all my babble..

Hi All, A newbie here with a recently obtained 1986 Subaru Gl Wagon 1.8L , Fuel Injected, Automatic. This baby has 152,000 miles on it. Great shape. I have the "Tick of Death" though, and am replacing oil pump, (reading here I got valueble info on going ahead) and replacing water pump, timing belts , cam and crankshaft seals. My questions are: 1) Is there anything else that I should go ahead and replace (inexpensively) since I am getting this done? 2) What about this so-called "relief valve" with a spring? Should I get the spring replaced? 3) Also, I have noticed a "surge" in the idle , meaning it will go to 2000 rpm, starting, after driving a few miles, whenever. Also, it goes up and down. What would be the cause of that? Mostly it seems stuck at 2000K. I have almost rear-ended a few cars, lol. (maybe that has something to do with timing?) or is it fuel injected related? or even a throttle control of sorts? I have read here a while, and have searched for alot of these questions, (and have found alot of answers, thanks you:).!! But these would really help me alot. Maybe one more question, how many "mechanic hours" do you think the above would entail? I have been quoted at 5.5 on average. Thank you so much for your time, and have been so grateful for all the info i have had on this site. ( I bought my parts through a suggestion here) So I am learning. Thanks again for any help.!!!

Just wanted to say hello, and thanks for a great site. I just bought a 1986 Subaru GL 1.8L. I need to just replace the oil pump, and she is as good as new (hopefully). She only has 152,000 on her. My valves tick, so I guess its the oil pump. See ya in the forums....
