  1. Finally got around to doing a bit more! A guy from work is lending me his engine crane so I pulled the legacy half into my garage and got to it. Took about the whole day to get the engine and gearbox out, most of that on stupid little things. Halfway through pulling it http://puu.sh/cJaJc/d58235174f.jpg http://puu.sh/cJaK8/0f2ebc3d15.jpg Engine and gearbox out http://puu.sh/cJaKY/ebfc1ba5cc.jpg http://puu.sh/cJaIk/b5ba7f5966.jpg Somewhat of a milestone, at least now I can clean them down, pull the gearbox clean it up take both the gearboxes apart and see what I'm in for. Then go over the engine I suppose, not sure how much I'm going to do there. Tom
  2. Its high temperature, wasn't sure if it was needed but thought I would be safe. Tom
  3. Fixed my central locking after not running the fronts through the original wiring grommets, wires split, all fixed and hopefully wont happen again. sand blasted and bent the backing plates I got for rear discs back into shape at work, then gave them, some paint. After sand blasting http://puu.sh/cytvF/536385fa1a.jpg Couple of coats of primer http://puu.sh/cytu3/2ac6d7fb96.jpg and after some paint http://puu.sh/cytto/289813de24.jpg Just have to borrow a torque wrench from work to put them on and I'll have some nice braking. Should be good. Tom
  4. My red 84 wagon is ST, I thought that was just the code for touring wagon, Its ea82 non turbo. Tom
  5. Got the rear disks today, need to clean up the backing plates and bend them back to shape, damn wreckers. Should be all fine without much work though. Tom
  6. Got the gearbox out of my parts sedan over the weekend, went a lot smoother then I thought it would. Had to buy a set of pin punches but I needed them anyway. My old parts sedan('84), dad bought it when he first moved to NZ ~2002 then left it in the driveway after buying a turbo legacy wagon, rego died and rust around the windshield made it impractical as a car for me. http://puu.sh/cqYVH/1d933288c4.jpg Gearbox dropped and about to drag it out http://puu.sh/cqYUn/cbb5471862.jpg Gearbox out before I cleaned it today with degreaser and water blaster http://puu.sh/cqYTi/cb18e24db5.jpg And if anyone was worried about that dodgy jack there, just needed to do that to roll the gearbox under the engine crossmember. Gearbox is now in the back of my wagon ready to take to work on Tuesday to find a spot to start taking it apart and cleaning it a bit more. Still not sure about a radiator solution, leaning towards the ej one for ease of hoses. and known cooling capacity. Also getting my rear disks on tuesday, will have to ask about a FI pump to. Cheers, Thomas
  7. Finished cutting the harness down tonight, Pretty sure I have the powers all sorted and the rest seems right so yeah, here's hoping anyway haha. http://puu.sh/ckvRZ/fbdd9bca95.jpg Tom
  8. Yeah, lucky indeed I suppose. Just starting to wonder if I need a pt4wd legacy box, but I dont think so. Seems that our wiring is a lot simpler too, since main engine plugs are on the opposite side to where the smj is its not routed through there, unless I'm missing something. Tom
  9. Started with the wiring over the weekend, between doing other things. Got the harness out and ready to start stripping all of the not needed wires. Doesn't seem too bad, but I'm still nervous about messing it up one way or another. http://puu.sh/cihaX/d7493c8d36.jpg http://puu.sh/cihcC/1e377f92c2.jpg Tom
  10. So after a bit of thinking and a whole bunch of 'why not' coming to mind I've decided to undertake an ej swap on my 84' wagon. Since I now have my 83 sedan to drive around throughout the process times not going to be too much of an issue, and with work taking a 4 week holiday over the new year I decided it would be a perfect time to get it done or even just the bulk of it. My car as it sits now is a carbureted ea82 4wd hi/low wagon. The plan: Replace ea82 with ej20 Recase ea82 hi/low gearbox front with ej hi/low front case (Like el_freddo has) except I plan on just keeping it 2wd/4wd. Use a FI Leone fuel pump and FI hose Radiator, unsure on this one, the one in my car needs replacing due to a slow leak so this bit is up in the air. Strip down the wiring myself (What could go wrong) Hopefully someone i know will help with an exhaust, if not get an exhaust made. Swap rear drums to disks, maybe swap fronts to turbo for the 25 spline? This should keep the cert guy happy. Hopefully get it certified no problem (Plan on contacting the guy on monday to hear his thoughts) The Donor: 1993 Subaru legacy wagon 2.0 4wd http://puu.sh/cfeJo/afe1518548.jpg http://puu.sh/cfeIJ/f475a49924.jpg http://puu.sh/cfeHJ/b5e5b012e8.jpg Quite rough on the outside and its been sitting a couple of years but it starts and runs fine with no known faults. At the moment I'm waiting on somewhere to do all this, I could do it here at home but it wouldn't be nice. Would love to do it at work (everything I could ever need there) but they may not like it even over the holidays. But I will see. Will try and rope in some help from friends I suppose as well. So thats where I'm at, the beginning. Cheers, Tom
  11. Couple of pictures http://puu.sh/c7Nck/5503d8ca0b.jpg http://puu.sh/c7N7H/fbd01e276a.jpg Tom
  12. Added an AM/FM radio from a datsun with tape deck input to switch to AUX input, made the cable, fitted it. Gutted out the tape deck that was in it to hold my ipod and have the switch for radio on/AUX on. Bought new speakers for the rear and ran new wires to them. Works great and I'm not stuck listening to the 2 or 3 horrible AM stations. pics to come. Tom
  13. Think she* means intake (the length between carbs and valves/cylinders). Tune length to optimize certain rpms. Tom Edit: Gender-blind.
  14. Buying a nice classic rally/road car haha? Wouldn't it be nice. Says in the auction that its twin webber, which I would say is true by the looks of it. (single acc.pump on carb) Think they are IDF Webbers. Really not sure on that bit though. Never heard of quad carb setup, would be insane, not sure how much gain there would be though. Edit: for photo, looks the same to me IDF webber,
  15. Now, that is some information! Thank you Jezek! Now as for it being hydraulic assistance/ road control, if i remember correctly from when i last used it, it switches itself off/ de-pressures at ~80km. Would that make sense? Thank you again! -Tom
  16. I would think it was retrofit if i didn't have 2 cars with the same system, and the shocks have subaru on them. Could be dealer installed I suppose. So the compressor and hydraulic pump are mounted in the same position, least something is similar.
  17. All the threads I could ever find were about the full pneumatic system on some (unsure which, think it was pre legacy) cars? And about how to replace them with standard. Can't remember now, this was 6months or so ago. Second what kiwigl said about model names.
  18. You could try painting the rims red (match the body) I did this with my wagon wheels and really like the look of it. There was also a picture of a tan coloured sedan with steelies painted the same colour as it somewhere. I would imagine the looks not for everyone though. +1 for spotlights -Tom
  19. Yeah, conventional shock/spring but this piece sits above spring tophat and below mount. Also oil filled not pneumatic. Wish i could find some subaru info on these. Looked through that custom suspension thread ages ago too, was well worth the read.
  20. Instead of cluttering a useful thread, I thought I would make another for a bit of information on these, http://puu.sh/bKmHR.jpg http://puu.sh/bKmJ3.jpg http://puu.sh/bKmIs.jpg http://puu.sh/bKmJQ.jpg Hydraulic lift suspension that sits on top of springs/shocks Both of the 1984 Leones I have (Wagon that I drive and spare sedan parts car) Have these on them. Note the really low spring perch mount, (Shock Subaru#21007GA280 made by SHOWA #90801) I presume the second # is SHOWA The pump sits in the left front guard http://puu.sh/bLIBV/af686db895.jpg Then seen through bumper http://puu.sh/bLIAX/b0b46e54ee.jpg Has a filler that bolts above and to left of radiator http://puu.sh/bLIBp/5ada10ac91.jpg Bolt on filler has a small air bleed hole in it. One line comes out of pump from here http://puu.sh/bLIzc/9f19657560.jpg Which runs to front left strut and splits off. So, if anyone has more information on these that would be cool, or questions that I might (not likely) be able to answer. No obvious marks on pump unit but i haven't had time to clean it down yet, so there may be. Cheers, Tom
  21. That is what I thought until i took one off and pressed the button. Definitely had fluid coming out. Has a filler under the hood as well, going into guard.
  22. I would just like to ad my $.02 Subaru had a third shock for the ea82, 21007GA280 (Rear, would imagine fronts are different as well). Spring perch is at the very bottom of the shock and the shaft is machined at the end. Its like that to accommodate for this hydraulic cylinder that slips over the shaft above the spring top hat. The hydraulic cylinder needs to seal around the shaft in order to work. And finding a replacement is proving very fun, ahah. Anyway, pictures! 23. Had the carpets and everything to get said carpets out of my 83 sedan, coated the floor in a sealer, put everything back in and found that its definitely leaking through the doors/windows on the passenger side. Waiting on a call back from local Subaru dealer to see if they can source them, not holding my hopes up though. Also did fuel filter, hoping that it might help with stuttering hard ride hand corners (didn't), then changed Oil and filter on my wagon.
