  1. Very observant as to noticing the lack of DS pictures, I noticed you haven't visited his ad He's got about 20 pictures posted, the DS did have one tangerine sized spot of rust on the rear edge of the RR wheel well. If I jump on this, I'm considering grinding it away and sealing it properly? Better a hole than a fender I think
  2. Yes this does have the EJ22, I have read quite a bit on the "Subaru Headgasket" subject, and agree that the 2.2 was better off, especially 1998.5 and later. However, I read (although I could see my two sources being biased) that the newer engines didn't so much mix oil and coolant, as develop external leaks of oil/coolant. I was thinking about the timing belt this morning, but regardless, how big of priority are the pulleys and pump? Other than that, thanks for the reassurance everyone. It doesn't run like it has high miles, I just get panicky with a low budget and the idea of having to pop open the engine.
  3. I think I'm going to go through with $2,200, if I don't nab a different car before, I can still make use of my post by asking, when do you think I need to worry about the issues described: possible head and diff leak ever so slight front bearing sideways movement slight leak on shocks
  4. This is it, kbb "good" value is $2400. http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/4679584947.html The DS head seemed a bit dirtier than the PS, couldn't see a leak but I assume it was from a coolant leak. Underneath is pretty clean. saw a bit of liquid in small spots. Oil looked good, not new, and not black. The rear diff had a splotch of oil covering part/half of it (looking at it from the rear). (Leak? Overflow from vent?) CV shafts looked fine in the back, the front looked fine but I may have seen a sheen on the boots. Could have just been the light, the rubber looked as good as in the rear. Brakes could use a flush, and maybe new rear pads as the rear rotors were not completely clear. Car brakes softer than I'd prefer. Rear shocks are a tad soft, front are good. One of the rear extended more than the other, and both showed a small leak. Seller had a full size jack in the trunk, put it to good use All bearings good, one of the front had a few millimeters of travel, minute amount but noticed. Shifts well for an auto of that age Subie, pretty much without hiccup. Rides well, given its a wagon, and give the softer rear shocks, it is slightly boaty on sharp maneuvers. I floated $2,200, he was receptive. All-season tires all around at 70-75% thread. I'm not entirely sure what I'm getting into, 154k is high mileage territory. Is this a good price, should I go $2100? I imagine if I keep the battery clean at all times, and flush the coolant on an accelerated schedule, along with 3-4k oil changes, I can prevent the HG from getting worse. Not to mention, I have some coolant-additive Head-gasket sealant at home, I hear it works well for preventative measures. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks! CL description: "for sale my automatic 4cylinder OBS 1998 subaru impreza outback sport color is black everything works interior everything, cold a/c heater works, power window all four works, rear wiper works, AWD works really good in the snow, brakes changed about a year ago, car starts and run everyday no any issues, snow/allseason good tires bought all four about a year ago, aftermarket stereo installed, no leaks and it doesn't burn oil, got my oil changed in time with maintenance and stuff, smoked front and rear turn signals smoke tail lights, got 6k HID kit on the car, got/clean title on hand. call or text for more information"
  5. I agree Gloyale, that "new coat" .... not to mention the great advertising scheme... $4,000 is steep, hence I came here to see if any amount of sweat can make an EA turbo dependable. No mention of a replaced headgasket or a rebuild PO (<<lol) If I was in the position for a serious side project, I'd haggle with this guy. but as a daily, ehem MilesFox, who are you kidding?! It better be built like a tank, and this ones clearly not haha I'm sure he'll sell it to someone uttering the usual WOW turbo boxer that's so cheap broo, it's like a vintage STI mann On the flip, if anyone in the Indiana/Illinois/Michigan area has an N/A EA or EJ subie with a stick they would part with, I'm willing to meet. I'll hit the marketplace
  6. http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/cto/4672311575.html It's in my range and price range, is the price fair and more importantly is it worth it: I've heard the EA series engines aren't accommodating when it comes to "boosting". If it all, what should I look out for? I've got the basics covered, but never had a turbo setup Thanks
  7. Listen, I understand Skankin was/is a seasoned board member. I hope to assume he has been as helpful as all of you since I have joined. However, the fact is that 3 members were hustled out of their funds, I was lucky enough to recover mine. I am all for being reasonable and accommodating, no ones perfect and we all get into jams. I'm a college student with an 80s Subaru, what does that say about my financial status? This isn't not a minor issue, not when Skankin went from excuses to straight bs. Do you know how many emails he ignored, he selectively responded to me. Then he comes back acting like I didn't get worries about my package, that he did nothing to reassure me. This is where I draw a line, when he thinks to put hi.self above others. That's when my sympathy ends, as I don't think very highly of scamming people whether decisively or by pure negligence. And I want the board to know, already by posting this thread, I found out about the others who were in the same boat but ended up empty handed with no recourse. IF, big if here, he ends up shipping the part, because I am an honest person in my dealings, and because I could actually use a second spare, I would send him back funds. Doubt that's going to happen though, Skank can prove me wrong I suppose. I am not divulging information, personal information for some sort of witch hunt. Only seek to warn others.
  8. Except that he's *not* in Alaska. Such a shoddy story, I'm just saying its highly unlikely. Then there's the fact that he texted me from an Alaska number, so I rightly did the same back In the process of using such an app, it notified me the user I was messaging was already using the same application! Not surprising, since it was one of the top Android phantom apps.
  9. I didn't feel it necessary to add this before, however, he originally told me he left my package with his sister to mail. Just more non-continuity for the record.
  10. Also just received word: " Sent Today, 02:55 AM Sam, Any luck receiving your stuff? I left it with my parents to ship before I left three weeks ago. I moved to Dutch Harbor, Alaska with the owners of the house I was painting... -Jus..." Yet he pays NO mention of my repeatedly ignored requests for tracking information. At this point in time, PayPal has awarded me my funds back from Skank. Heed our warning, two (3? Subarubrat) no shows with separate reasoning for each?
  11. Still no word from Skankin. On the plus side, I did get my money back. Anyone who sees this, I'll buy your EA81 hub if you have one. Thanks pps
  12. Sounds like he is in a very tight spot, it's a shame how things turned out for the moment. I'll let you all know if I hear word from him.
  13. Super thorough advice as always dude!! Couldn't have asked for a better run-down of that approach. I couldn't help but think a little drill work would get those EA81 hubs mated with an EA82 set-up.. If there's enough metal, it's not like it would be getting any serious force on that hole.. Skylar said he has a hub, I'm willing to pull the trigger in the next few days. I'll.. pm both of you tomorrow
  14. I understand us board members can take awhile to get to shipping. Its a pain, and it can be pricey. However, I do a lot of online bizz, and I just can't assume he's blowing me off like that til he can ship it out. Then again, I took a look and saw he's quite an active member. Now a few of you are backing him. Still... PayPal claim is not coming down, I have to cover myself. Oh and Dinky, I certainly did notice he was last on the 8th. He hopped on to reply, and hasn't since. What really throws a wrench into things, is that it's not my cash. I am buying a part for "my car", but I sold it a buddy of mine. Based on his collection of cars, and a small shop to boot, he'll do even better than me! For some reason, he couldn't track a hub down though. Auto-parts.com seems to have a few, but I'd much rather buy one off of someone from the board. Thanks for all the help! I'll be back on tomorrow
  15. I agree, and he had told me of some of his history. I feel like he might have asked too little and now can't ship it out.. "swindle" is a strong word, but I did want to get the message out. Oh and hubs! I'm always ready, PM when it's convenient for you. Thanks Skylar
  16. man this HUB hunt has been a pain

  17. I have been looking for an eighties EA81 4WD front hub for sometime, I got in touch with SkankinPicklehttp://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/user/33-skankinpickle/ after he got back to me about my WTB post. Took awhile to get confirmation pics of the part, once that was received, I agreed to him sending a PayPal invoice (that whole route, the taxed transac). I paid it, and unsurprisingly, he didn't provide a tracking number. He was getting to it with convincing reasoning, but days turned to weeks. In total, it's been just shy of a month, filed a dispute earlier on. The turning point was him adopting an out of state phone number, ehem "moving out of state" and leaving the package to be shipped by someone else. Riiight... TextPlus confirms him as a user of their service. Now it's escalated to a claim, and I expect PayPal to reverse my funds. However, I have heard otherwise from other unfortunate members. A lesson to all out there making similar deals with board members, use a credit card instead of your PayPal balance. If anything happens, your Credit Card Provider will cover you. I realized my mistake, and wish I had exercised some foresight. If anyone has this part, please help out another board member. Winter is coming! The Subie is getting neglected due to the stripped hub splines. I have a 1987 Subaru Standard Hatch. The BRAT hubs, among other models, are compatible. Here's pictures of what I need! http://imgur.com/3C7Zf55,XOYYODJ,3nkbcum,16dLiN7,GkxnXP0,KexugeQ,B24RMmM,eft53TW,gLq6EK5,jmSAaqd
  18. Thanks for the informative replies, unfortunately it looks like I may be returning to the Nissan family xD, but I'm still open to one WRX I found. Based on what you, Fairtax4me, said, I'd still bring my mechanic and thoroughly inspect the car. However, it has 120k and is one of the modder cars. Always a risk of being beaten on, but it has had upgraded parts and a recently replaced turbo! I'll put the link here, if anyone wants to comment on it, please feel free. http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/4517709394.html
  19. I'm going to have to one-up you! Like I mentioned, I know the guy who bought my Soob, he showed me the clutch plate http://postimg.org/gallery/6aj0woow/
  20. I'm looking into getting a car to replace my Summer bike. Looking around, the only cars I've found that aren't mundane Rollas and Civics, not to mention with 175k+ mileage, are Subies! I've looked at a few other types of cars, but they usually are not maintained properly or have too many miles for my taste. SO! I'm honing in on an Outback Sport (2003+ gen), yet I'm plagued by the thought of being bored with the level of power of that kind of ride. I'm searching for stick-shifts, to get some fun in the snow, but a WRX would certainly bring me up to a comfy level of power. //I almost hopped on a low mileage 5 speed Baha, thinking there's no way I'd be bored with so much practicality Under my budget, I have found a few 2002/2003/2004 WRX's with either 120-147k miles, or one or two with about 100-110k but some risky mechanical issues. For those in the know, what do you think about buying such a WRX? I hear tell the Turbo repairs are frighteningly expensive, and I also don't intend on buying a car I have to replace the H.G. on I'm fine with a little work on my car, but I don't want that in a higher budget ride. For my last Sub, '87 Standard Hatch, that was alright. What should I look out for when buying a used WRX? Are the bug eyes renown for some kind of faults? A family member's friend bought a New WRX back around 2000-2003 (idr), and I heard he had some costly repairs with his turbo setup which became common-place starting that year. This is what I recall from a decade ago, any merit? I'm going to browse the marketplace, hope to get back some useful info as per usual on here! Thanks y'all EDIT: I have also found a few rides with 150-200k but a rebuilt or swapped engine. I frown away from that kind of setup, is there any chance of that working or will I end up with a lot of suspension and trans repairs? And if you are the lad from Chicago who sold your Baha hours before I came for it, I despise you!! (lol jk)
