  1. Theres allot of hoses and this and that you'll need to unplug, but there's really only 6 bolts that hold the intake on. If you spend some time familiarizing yourself with the car, I think its a manageable job. I'd recommend checking out some of miles fox's videos If after watching, you feel good about it, then go for it! If after watching it, you still don't know where the intake manifold is, I'd listen to rdweninger!
  2. Hi there I'm getting everything together for my first ej swap and the next objective on my list is to redrill the flywheel. I'm having a hard time though finding threads that step through it. I'm sure they exist so I'm sorry if I'm bringing up a redundant post. I've found lots of threads where people mention that they did it, but none where they show how to do it. So I have the flywheel from the ej motor to place the new holes. What kind of drill bit should I use? Am I gonna need a press for this? Also, I'm guessing I should get it balanced after redrilling? Any tips or pointers through this are appreciated, or even a link to a previous thread that goes through it if you know of one. thanks!
  3. ah man thats the best thing to hear! thanks dan. So should codes be checked when the car is actually running?
  4. Hi all, 1992 loyale, spfi ea82. So I finally got around to checking to see what my cel has been whining about as its frequently on and off. I got the following: No plugs: #34 (not super worried about this) Green plugs: #5 White plugs: #11, #13, #61 I'm most concerned with the 11 and 13, as they indicate the crank angle sensor? Looking at previous threads, most people suspect either the timing belt or distributor. Is this correct? The belts are relatively new, I just did them early this summer following a headgasket job. But it was my first time so it wouldn't shock me if I biffed it and they are already failing. I obviously had to get out the gun thing and play with the disty to set the timing. what would you expect to be the most likely culprit here? Thanks!
  5. What differences are you seeing? Your 88 might be FI where the 86 may be carbed so they could look different there...
  6. Cool, thanks for all the ideas guys! I'll give it a shot this weekend and report back on how it went
  7. hmmm, well my flywheel is already off but maybe I can still use the same concept is similar way...
  8. Hey there I got an ea82 out of the car i'm gonna crack into but I forgot to loosen the crank pulley bolt before the motor came out. Now there's no fly wheel to grip. I see one option is to hold the cam still with a spanner tool but I don't have one. Any creative ways to hold it still to break it loose? Thanks in advance
  9. There has been allot of attention on the forum about how crappy allot of replacement axles are. 2 years is definitely long enough for sub par axles to fail, spoob I replaced mine with some from autozone and they started clackin within a month. Where did you get the axles from?
  10. Ahh common...somebody's gotta deliver with some first hand experience. Until I see it, I'm finding myself further and further into the "if it sounds to good to be true it probably is" camp...
  11. I'm still looking forward to seeing pictures of your set up. How much did it cost you to make? Anyone else got first hand experience with it I'd love to see it
  12. Hi everyone, In a recent post, someone brought up the HHO generator... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/149293-simple-upgrades-to-increase-miles-per-gallon-andor-horsepower/ I'm super curious about this and wanted to start a new thread to reach out for broader input. So...does this actually work? On the internet, I find two contrasting perspectives 1. HHO is awesome and everyone should do it 2. It is a hoax that simply makes the engine run lean, which does give better gas milage but does not conserve power and has nothing to do with generating hydrogen I'm looking for your input! Especially first hand experience if you've done this to your suby. I've got a stock loyale. Better gas milage sounds great but not looking to lose power from an already weak motor...
  13. can't you gauge them by putting weight on your car, letting off and watching how much the body bounces? If it stops bouncing pretty quick and snaps back to original position, then they are good. If it just keeps bouncing for a while then they are shot?? I could be way off here so someone correct me if im wrong. Just figured it'd be worth assessing them before assuming they're bad..
  14. well crap. The owner says the car was sold last night, which is weird cuz we had plans to meet as soon as she was off work but it is what it is. keep my eyes peeled for the next one.
  15. yea I was really hoping to check out the car but it hasn't worked out yet. The add said the title was clean, but after being in regular communication with the owner, she stopped responding once I asked about the status of the title. Hopefully it will work out but I'm picking up the vibes she doesn't actually have the title. I'll update the post if I actually get to check out/but the car. Really hoping it works out because I have an extra running ea82, so even if it was something worse than the intake or headgaskets I could have still got it back in decent condition. Oh well, skeptical but keeping my fingers crossed! thanks for the feedback everyone!
  16. Hello, Since fixing my car till point of no major existing problems, I've been looking to pick up a cheap car to be a cheap and easy first project. There is a loyale for sale locally for pretty cheap. The owner said the car was doing fine and then started blowing large amounts of white smoke out of the exhaust, in an all of a sudden disaster way that makes the owner never want to drive it again ha. I am thinking this is probably a blown headgasket? If so, I think I could swap out the motor, have some fun with it and get my money back later. Is there anything else I should consider that could have caused this? I haven't checked out the car yet so I can't provide too many more details. But any other culprits that could cause this that I should check for when I'm looking at the car? Thanks!
  17. I think you've got an ea82 right? I don't know of a drain plug. Just pop off and plug the hoses. If you don't have a syphon, just take it off and pour it out.
  18. hah this whole story is great. There should be a thread of "what happened to my subaru lately"
  19. When I did it I think I remember taking off the whole pump, and then you can hold onto the other side to get the nut off.
  20. I had some trouble with the mickey mouse gasket too. I got it half way tightened down and realized it had slipped out of place. But by then it had stretched out and would no longer fit in the groove. I ended up making a run to the subaru dealer to get a different one and it was impressive to compare the two and see how much my first one had stretched out.
  21. I made the switch to coverless also recently and like it allot, no secrets on how the belts are doing ha. I did my cam seals while the cam towers were off, didn't even think about doing it the other way around...
  22. On mine, both the switches were bad on passanger and drivers side door. From both sides, you could take the window down but not up. I only cleaned up the one on the door, so now it can be rolled up from that door, but not from the master console on the drivers side. If it can go down the motor should be good right? its probably just that the switch contact for going up is dirty i would think
  23. I recently had the EXACT same problem you do. Cleaning the switches did the trick. It was easy and I posted some pictures in this thread http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/148359-power-window-switch-clean-up/?do=findComment&comment=1244537 Regarding your question more specifically. Converting the other way the best I've found is If your super determined to swap them all to manual though, I hope someone on the board can hlep you accomplish it. good luck
  24. Wow! so I followed your guys advice and moved the rear tires up to the front and vice versa. Problem solved! I did rotate the tires a while back but maybe with other work I did to the car I never got it up to speed to notice and thus thought it was associated with the ball joint/tie rod stuff I was messing with. Seems so obvious now... Time to do some homework on balancing tires I guess ha. I love problems that can be fixed without dishing out cash! Thanks everyone for your input and helping me figure this out!
