  1. hmmm, the dealer here couldn't even pull up anything older than a Loyale... Brats, GLs, DLs, etc are not even in their database...
  2. got my Brat inspected and legal...so now to start fixing all the "other" issues... the pitch rod has no bushings...I can't seem to find them at autozone or even ebay (they usually have everything)... Is there a quick easy substitute somewhere? Maybe something you can scrounge at Home Depot or something? It seems any kinda round bushing could be made to work...
  3. nice...I'll be doinf this soon as I have a couple sets of 6 bolts wheels sitting around...
  4. I'm not worried about the nut...just the end of the stud that screws into the head.
  5. the exhaust manifold studs on the underside of the head...should I use loctite to keep them seated in the head? if so purple, blue or red (light, med, strong)
  6. I'll check it out... I have the Permatex Copper spray that I have used on some exhaust gaskets and other high temp applications...especially if I have to re-use a gasket.
  7. if your brat is really really nice I would suggest getting a winter beater...keep your pride and joy garaged during salt season... nice color combo too...original?
  8. Silicone will hold up to the exhaust temps and pressure?
  9. Well I pulled them off and found that I had not fully cleaned the mating surface on one side for sure...and one of the gaskets had a indentation on the ring from being tightened down on a piece of old gasket...I did not see anything on the other side but wire brushed it clean as well...both sides had been leaking. Some of the studs were loose too so I tightend all those up first...should I use locktite???... actually each exhaust port has 4 stud hole but only 2 are used...I'm guessing the heads are interchangable... One of the unused holes has a broken stud too...but it's almost flush and does not "seem" to interfere with anything... Put it all back together and now one side (the one with the old gasket stuff) appears to be sealed now. but the other side still has a leak but that maybe because of the "indented" sealing ring on the gasket...I admit I did not check to see which side that gasket went back onto...But that side is also the one with that broken stud but still don't see where it interferes. Anyway, I ordered another set of MS91075 gaskets. Some here have said that the gaskets are re-usable but I'm not too sure...
  10. what should the EGR hose hook up to? Mine was missing...I put a line on it and tapped into a manifold port that I found was un-capped and the engine died...but a lot of the emmision stuff was gutted already so no telling where it was plumbed originally
  11. bigger breaker bar...I got a 2 footer for tough nuts...but a high quality impact gun is probably your best bet...
  12. nice. I wonder if they would fit a Brat? Sachs is pretty high quality OEM for a lot of German cars
  13. back from christmas holiday and my Felpro MS91075 had arrived...correct dimensions.... intalled them and is seems they have a slight leak or blowby around the edge...not sure if they need a little bit to seat or seal up but I think thats a little strange. I only torqued them to 20ft/lbs since that what my Haynes says...I snugged them a little more by hand and the leaks had reduces but I can still feel some leakage... I'm suspecting warped surface???
  14. how much sealing area do you have? On my engine the flat sealing area around the exhaust port barely covers the edge of the sealing ring on the gasket. The engine is marked EA81? I think somewhere on the block that I recall seeing. Not sure if it's original to the vehicle or has been rebuilt or has different heads with smaller ports or what...maybe 1.6 heads on a 1.8 block? It's just when I placed those subaru gaskets up into place, it was just so right on the edge of the mating surface that I just don't see how it can be the right one. But again, with a 30 year old vehicle, who knows if the engine or heads have been swapped?
  15. it sounds like Subaru has the verbige all backwards...anyway, it's not exactly a rare part...how has something as simple as an exhaust gasket gotten so messed up in the parts world?
  16. here is a pic...the 44022GA300 gasket from the Subie dealer is much larger and would barely seal I think...the metal ring is right on the edge of the flat sealing surface around the exhaust port.
  17. no I didn't miss the felpro number...but I gave the dealer a shot with the OEM part number....I figured how can I go wrong...LOL gonna try finding that felpro number locally
  18. the gasket that came off my brat had the port opening 1-7/8" and the bolt holes were 3" across. the exhaust port opening on the 44022GA300 gasket from the dealer was 2-1/4" wide.
  19. well, got my gaskets in from Subaru...44022GA330.... not it. the ring is too wide. I brought my old gasket in and they couldn't match it. gonna have to try NAPA next.
  20. went down the the subie dealer...they were pretty clueless. Brat? What model is that? L something? Not seeing anything older than 87... glad y'all gave me the part number...special order...they don't even have a schematic or anything so I hope the right thing shows up... well cheap enough anyway. about $5 each... Spaz..as for your homemade exhaust gasket, I am nothing short of amazed. But if it works it works.
  21. it's a project car...and the pipe is just kinda hanging right now until I get the right gasket...
  22. how much do those bad boys run at the Subie dealer? Is it even a stocked item for our older cars? I'm not a fan of over priced dealer stuff but there is one about an hour away and it might be worth the drive. Otherwise I can order a pair on line. all the local parts places list that "flange gasket" but not avail or special order.
  23. that works for "most" applications....but not exhaust. it's gotta be a specialized, metal reinforced gasket.
