that's where my second battery is sitting my engine bay is no different, with the weber, or the holley (except the holley takes up more room, and eats more gas)

custom axle info and identity help
mcbrat replied to wounded brat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes, there is some machining involved. a couple of board members have a turbo tranny in a ea81 based vehicle, and have had to have custom axles made... check here.. USMB member discount... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36189 -
Anybody know what this is from?
mcbrat replied to SUBARU3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I believe left side 80-82 to be more precise. should have the chrome plastic trim around it. but definitely a Gen2 wagon.... http://usmb.net/gallery/album91/PDC_0334 -
Pete, if you go to the photo gallery link in the gray bar above, you should be able to upload your pics there.

they will have listings by engine size. you need to tell them 1800 OHC. always handy to have the VIN with you too, along with the decoder for it. and like Russ says... take the part in with you if you can...

so did you grab said items?

bump for morgan

you really won't want them if they are stiffer. I've got the stiffer RX front springs on my ea81 struts (to hold the added weight of my bumper/winch) and they force the axle to ride at max extension basically. down travel is decreased and up travel is considerable stiffer. expect to lose axles regularly.

any time you modify a vehicle to be able to run larger tires than what it was designed for, and then run larger tires, you are gonna put more stress of the joints. even with new tranny mounts, engine mounts, bearings, etc... you still are going above and beyond the original design specs. I've had to replace many axles with the different lifted soobs I've had. all BYB design kits. Whether you buy a BYB Kit from Ozified, a AA lift from Shady, or a Mudrat lift, you will replace axles. it's a given. all 3 of these kits are still priced way below what it would cost to do a Unibody lift on any other vehicle. quit complaining.

yes, the EA81 is an OHV engine.

Will an EA81 raditor fit an EA82 ?
mcbrat replied to paulb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes, but like Craig said, you need to be willing do some cutting and bending... the ea81 rad is taller, but not as wide. I put some smaller rubber feet on the bottom support for the ea81 rad to sit on.... I put one in a '87 wagon, along with an ea81.... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=7675&sort=1&cat=530&page=1 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=7676&sort=1&cat=530&page=1 -
I'd be tapping some new threads and replacing that 1" block on your drivers side of the mustache bar
-
unless your in a lifted ea81 with stock engine w/weber and 27" tires, and you have crappy Iowa gas.... then it's foot to the floor for 200 miles just trying to hold it at speed with the other vehicles on the interstate

Do 81 Subarus have timing belts???
mcbrat replied to Alexx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
no, there is a gear on the crank at the rear of the engine that drives the cam (directly below the crank) for the engine. there is also a gear on the crank at the front of the engine that drives the distributor. no belts at all. the transmission is totally separate. -

it's only me for sure... the camping is just wide open primitive camping. Morgan had his tent next to mine last year. though we are expecting a lot more people this year. we've been doing lots more promoting and it's more organized. last year about 4 pre-registrations (34 vehicles total). this year 20+ vehicles. pre-reg saves money, but the deadline is past..... so it's like $90 to register now at the event I think.... the trails are narrow, and lots of brush, just like the trails at WCSS7, so expect losts of side scratches....

a wagon tow bar should work fine.

Removing engine without hoist
mcbrat replied to erikvr's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
grab some chain and a 4x4 post. set post across fenders wrap chain around post and hook to appropriate engine lift points. grab a buddy, or a stranger off the street, and lift it out. (provided you have everything unhooked okay and slid forward) -
ea81 carb'd air filters discontinued?
mcbrat replied to Humble Nuto 53's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
there's a place in DSM called "City Brake/Import Auto Parts" and I just got 2 from them. they use different suppliers than the chain stores, and they always have the right parts if I ever need to specify stuff for a '85+ ea81 too.... -

I will second Morgan's comment with the addition it has to be a manual tranny...
