EA82 Caliper questions
mcbrat replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had the same problem, having never done brakes before.... I didn't know about the slide bolt removal... you need to leave the calipers bolted on, and remove the caliper slide bolt. then the pad braket/piston assembly pivots up, and you can push on it with as much force needed to turn the piston back in..... -
Shocks don't give you any lift, they just control the counce of the suspension.... you can get 2-3 inches in the rear by "re-setting" the torsion bar plate that bolts to the rear trailing arm on each side. you can put RX springs onto height adjustable EA81 front struts, and adjust them up all the way. this will give you another 2 inches roughly in front. if/when you do this, be prepared to replace axles regularly.... the increased angles increases the wear on the axle joints.... and you will put more wear on the outside edges of your tires as your camber will be off slightly.

EA82 heater core exchange DONE!! Not too difficult
mcbrat replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Paul, when you get teh write-up complete, put it into the USRM Articles, and let me know it's there so I can "approve" the article so it's visible to all... -
well, I did the rear main tonight, and put in the ea82 flywheel after putting in new timing marks... looks like the marks are about 6 deg. off. so if you have a ea82 carb flywheel on a ea81 engine, and you set your timing at 10 BTDC according to the ea82 marks, you really are just under 4 BTDC... I got the old rusty exhaust bolts off one side, but not the other. studs just will not move. this enignie has the emissions steel spacers on each side, and the studs are rusted to the spacers... tried to get the spacer off, and broke one of those bolts.... I'm almost to the point of just ripping the head off and putting another one on....

oh, I've got an ea81 that's going in it, but I'm still working on it... -
yeah, most likely a SteelyDel Guard... here's a pic of a wagon I used to have with one on. mine was one of only 2 he made with the extrasupport bar across the front top... the only other bar with that extra support went to Adam. Here is a pic of the "regular" SteelyDel Guard on MikeW's old wagon and this was a Steely Del Proto-type bar... he never made any more of this one....

best combo of stock ea81 parts
mcbrat replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sounds about right... though I think the Brat cam thing is still unknown... it's year dependent. in 84, there was not a different cam for the Brat... so hard to say... the ea81 Delta torqe cam is reasonable.... -
I pulled the motor out of my 86 parts Brat last night. hopefully this one will last it came froma known driver. it was driven to me for delivery (120 miles) and just recently made a 8 hour round trip to pick up an ATV, so it's a runner.... if all else fails, I will rip the motor out of Grizzly and drop it in, as I've got another engine coming for it... Just glad this 86 Parts Brat dropped into my lap (plus I've got a line an a 87 Brat with only 58k supposedly....)

Not to Worry.... He will respond... making the lifts is not his day job, and he has been known to travel for work....

fuel line check-valve to prevent flow-back into the tank.. where's the best place to put one? right after the pump? I have an aftermarket pump on my 82 Brat, and it doesn't maintain the fuel in the lines very well when it sits for a while (week or more)...

I usually dont do "sighted" threads but...
mcbrat replied to MorganM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
there are lots of Legacy RHD mail cars out there.... my father-in-law is a rural carrier. I keep trying to get him to get one -
right, you can use the ea82 DOJ on both ends of a ea81 rear axle, and get a bit more travel... but the axles are NOT a direct swap.

they didn't seem too hard to find. there was 3 of them in the yard at one time, though I don't think there are any right now... I tied all the circuits together on mine, and have it tied into my lighting circuit, so when I turn on my lights, they come on too. one of the sets of wires is for the 4WD lights, so you could wire it to come on with your 4WD dash light. I just went the simple route. my 4WD light is on all the time anyway because of my lift.... all of the circuits on the guage are for lights. the guages are purely "mechanical". though 30 degrees is hardly enough. have easily been off scal both ways....

yep, the inclinometer... that's what mine came out of... http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo95

The radiator bracket came undone from the tank
mcbrat replied to GLCraig's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
cool. I grabbed the file, and moved it to the USRM, and added the article out there under the USRM Link... -
if you have a line of oil across the front underside of your hood, the front crank seal is leaking.... my bets would be on the oil pump... and I have broken a plate before while the pump was still in the engine. royal pain to get the broken pieces out..... slow and carefully.....
-
did you get just the gasket for mating to the block? should really put all new O rings in the pump while you have it out... they tend to harden up pretty good, and crack...

your set-up sounds like what I pulled off my '80 Wagon's 1600 when I replaced it with a '83 ea81 disty... not sure how to handle the old disty swap into the ea81 as far as the vac stuff goes. I'm guessing you need to use them both. the newer distys have a spring on the vac advance, so that you don't have to back it off with a retard vacuum.... again, guessing....
