I've had the BFG all-terrains before, but not looking to spend that much... I may end up going with the Liberators now, or just putting my MT's on it for the winter..... the duelers were (for 5) mounted, balanced, road hazard, stems, etc... $556 so the liberators are much cheaper......

82 BRAT throw out bearing carrier question
mcbrat replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had this problem when I tried to the larger flywheel with the 82 tranny. you need to use a '82 TOB. it should still work, but it'll be riding right on the edge of the fingers. the 83-84 carrier won't fit the 82 tranny. tried that too.... I ended up still using the smaller 82 flywheel..... -
I've got a lifted 87 wagon with PS and a weberized ea81 in it. will be used as a daily driver. possibly some dirt roads, but my 82 Brat will be my main off-roader. I was looking for some All Terrains to put on it, for the upcoming snow, and any future use it might see. I didn't really like my BFG MT's on the snow/ice last year, so decided to go with AT's. after looking at the Liberators, Kumhos, and various others, including sizes available for 14" wheels, I have decided on the following I think... in a 27 x 8.50 x 14

Got a new toy for the coupe!
mcbrat replied to subaru_styles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
they are actually a velour/plush cloth (checkered part) and the side bolsters are black textured vinyl. I have a set from a 85 RX sedan as well, but mine aren't nerly that nice....! nice score.... -
I have a sert-up from a caddy that I carry with me, but I would agree, it is too small. it will air up slowly. the shorter the hose you have attached, the better. I have a 25 ft. coil hose, and it quickly loses pressure.

I've bought the Modine 698 in the past, but had to drill the holes for the fan mounts. The GO/DAN 34698 (Advance Auto Parts) http://www.partsamerica.com already has the captive nuts welded on in the correct locations, so I go with that one, even though it's a little pricier...

anybody have decent scans of 87 FSM wiring diagrams
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
got some info off the scans, but still have a question on the harness that goes to the oil pump? which wire is which on the harness. I see 2 that "could" be the oil sender plug. also, what side was the fan wired from? pics of the connectors would be great I'm almost done... still need to do the heater core though..... -
will a ea81 radiator mount into a 87 wagon?
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
piece 'o cake..... drilled 2 small holes (19" centers) and screwed in some plastic plugs I had. put the ea81 rad in, and had to bend up the support lip, to fit the rad under it, then drilled some new holes in the support and bolted the rad up just perfect there is enough clearance that I didn't need to cut away anything for the rad cap, though it is partially hidden. plenty of room to take it off since it sits low. -
Heater fan speed changes with RPM?
mcbrat replied to 4RnrRick's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have hed vehicles in the past where if I was putting the vehicle under strain (ie: up a long hill) it would automatically reduce/cut power consumption to take the strain off the alternator, to help divert power to the engine... don't think soobies did this, but I'm used to the ea81.... if my 87 was running, I'd be able to check it out..... -
I've run 205/60R13's on a Turbo Brat before. didn't have any rubbing issues with them on the Brat so I'd assume they would be fine on your RX.... though it's a harder to find size... Tire Rack has some listed, and I've seen some on eBay....

rust free, and extremely low mileage. there was an 82 Brat in OR/WA that was prstine and had 75k on the clock. it sold for $6200. Insurance companies are also recognizing the Brats as collectors vehicles, so the really nice ones bring good money.....

most events around here state the fire extinguisher needs to be within reach of the seated driver. mine is next to the console on the pass side... Now: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=2722&sort=1&cat=530&page=1 Before the 5 speed: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=2721&sort=1&cat=530&page=1

Poor Mans Gasket Kit (whats needed?)

MorganM has Liberator All-Terrains on, and they worked good on the trails. got a little "slicked" up in the mud though those are about the most aggressive you can get from WalMart in a 225/70R14 tire. the Douglas Extra-Trac (or whatever) seems decent too, but slightly smaller....

this is a 82 motor and only had the spacer on the pass side.... hmmm come to think of it, I wonder if I still have a spacer on that set of heads I just took off.....
-
Background: ea81 engine with exhaust/emissions spacer on pass side head. (can't get it off...) ea82 Y-Pipe with level manifolds mount points Problem: 1" gap between exhaust and drivers side head. I have a post up in the marketplace for a spacer to use, but was wondering if this would work/last for a 10 minute drive to the exhaust shop. Make a form, and use a bunch of quik steel to make an adapter. I have a bunch of the quik steel left from a different project, but not sure if it would handle the heat for the 10 minute drive, or if it would just melt and run into the Y pipe? any thoughts on this, or suggestions for something different? I always have the option of putting together a bunch of gaskets to make up the size difference, but they are hard to come by around here without ordering them..... I may have a 1" thick piece of Aluminum left, but it's some nasty hard stuff, and might be too small.....

Bad JuJu to re-use axle spring pins?
mcbrat replied to 88HatchMonster's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
unless they are bent, or come out too easily I re-use them without problems all the time. seems most of the axles I get have them included though..... -
let's not forget the "original" Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter

EA81 Flywheel-Clutch questions
mcbrat replied to jeffroid's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
you should be fine. I ran with the smaller clutch on my 82 4wd wagon with big tires and a weber for 40k miles.... 4WDs had the smaller clutch through 1982... -
EA81 brake Rotor/lug nut assembly interchange w/EA82?
mcbrat replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
what's wrong with yours? if you still have stock front brakes for the '82 you have solid front rotors. to change to the vented 83W/84+ style, you need the calipers that go with them. I see the solid rotors on eBay all the time, and I kept them on my 82 so I don't have to deal with vented rotors getting plugged up with mud. the hub with lug nuts just bolts onto the calipers, so if you need to replace that, the ea82 hub should bolt on to the rotor, but may not work if the spline placement is different relative to the mounting point on the rotor. Qman has used a ea81 hub on an ea82 I think to make a certain wheel have a better offset, so it is possible most likely..... -
EA81 Flywheel-Clutch questions
mcbrat replied to jeffroid's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if you haven't already gotten the smaller clutch/PP, I have for sale a un-used clutch and pressure plate for the 200 mm (2WD size) flywheel... $40. includes shipping -
if you took off a 1/8" all around the groove where the bead sets, and 1/8" all around the outside edge (rim) on both sides, a 15" tire should in theory fit then. not sure if taking 1/8" off the groove would affect the stability of the wheel or not. wouldn't really help much as far as acting like a beadlock though. don't think that 1/8" extra lip is gonna stop much if your aired down enough to need bead locks. or if you're cornering fast enough to need bead locks.
