EA-71 head interchange question
mcbrat replied to SUBARU3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Todd, I'm hoping Richie shows up, as I don't know the specifics.... there are a few JDM EA71's around with hydraulic lifters.... -

EA-71 head interchange question
mcbrat replied to SUBARU3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Richierich had an issue a long time ago with a Gen1 Brat. Turned out he had an older solid lifter block with the newer style heads.... I believe he had to change them to the old style heads... Richie, you out there? -

Yep,another 5 speed conversion
mcbrat replied to onecrf's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
as far as using the 5 speed flywheel, it's not a problem. the flywheel is centered and supported by the piece that comes out of the crank. just be sure to tighten the bolts down and use loctite. I used the 5 speed flywheel and complete clutch kit. I love it.... you'll want to keep the matched flywheel and pressure plate together. so if you go with the ea81 flywheel, you'll want to use the ea81 pressure plate, but still need to use the ea82 release bearing, and the ea82 clutch disk. -
you'll just need to get rid of the compressor, or build a "lift" for the bracket mounts to get it up high enough.

how to tell an 1800 ea81 from an ea71?
mcbrat replied to Rockman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah, that chart has some problems. it was originally copied from somewhere else about 6 years ago..... -
Any one cut the back off there Subie?
mcbrat replied to 4RnrRick's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
a couple of people have done it with Brats. there was some contemplating it a while back from someone who smashed up the rear of their wagon.... there's a 86 wagon for sale in MO right now that would be perfect for that.... it's already lifted, and has a weber carb and bigger tires/wheels... and would make the drive to WA okay.... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22936 -
the ea81 block heaters screwed into the front of the block on the passenger side....

Big Tire fitment throughout the models/years
mcbrat replied to 4RnrRick's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the ea82's like the 85-89 wagons you're thinking about have bigger opening that the older wagons. one of the problems with cutting up into the rears of the older 80-84's is that you start getting into 2 layers. the outer skin, and the inner well. then you need to look at sealing that area up again. not sure about the 85-89 style though.... I think to run 27/28's with a 3" lift on a ea82 is no cutting in the back, and very minimal trimmin in the front... at least that's what it looks like on the wagon I just got.... -
you can get the 4"/3" lift for your wagon from http://www.ozified.com then it'l take a little bit of cutting/hammering to let the 28's spin freely... nice to see another somewhat local board member.... the 27" swampers are actually about 27.6" or so...

"new" alternator arrived - bonus
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got a complete wiring diagram with this one. the 135 amp one comes with an Internal VR, so it's pretty much plug and play, but this 150 should be no problem. I'll just make a little harnes that will plug into the stock stuff where possible. there's a big warning on it that regular VR's will fry if you try to use them -

it came with a bracket too, but I have another StreetWires alt (135) and it has a piece that bolts on to make it a saddle mount. fit's right onto the old soobie -

the xt6 one I just put in before castana is having issues now..... might have been the water -
it was advertised as a 135 amp, but it's actually a 150 amp with external VR included http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7925790778

well, I had a HG blow on a ea81 wagon, it was fine until the motor warmed up. it expanded enough to open up the tear in the HG. then the exhaust went into the coolant. but while the motor was cold and just started, it was fine.... There have been reports on the board where an leaky intake gasket caused the stuff you describ in the VC's....

if you go to Radio Shack (or equivalent electronics supply type store) you can get a DPDT Switch and wire it using this diagram.... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/diagrams/centerlamp-wire.jpg I have a writeup somewhere that uses a stock switch and a DPDT Relay that CLantieri wrote up a while back.... but not sure where it's at....

Tim, you should get the ej22 kit and use it to put your spare 4 speed in the legacy

Off Topic sort of.... the JDM EA81 RX had a D/R and LSD.....
