Alternator Interchangability
mcbrat replied to Snowman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the early legacy (90-93) Alts are I think 75 Amps, and they are in the same housing as the XT6 alt. you will still need to have a v-belt pulley put on it, but it will fit the same as the xt6 alt. -
The article was covering a mud fest in Bonners Ferry, ID pic was of a ea81 GL gold wagon with duallies front and rear, going through a mud pit. it had "Goldmember" spray painted across the rear hatch.... said it didn't make it across on the run they took the pic from, but made it through on other runs...

I think it will. also, how is your radiator, and fans set-up. as far as the oil cooler helping, it's been nasty hot here in Iowa this summer, and all of my soobs have been riding a little warmer than normal, except for 1. andf the is my 84 Turbo Brat, which actually has a double oil cooler on it.... I'm not sure how it's plumbed yet, but it's been staying cool all summer....

it would be interesting to see if this one is jetted any differently that the one on Grizz. Grizz's was bought from CarbsUnlimited brand new with the Suby Kit, and the one on the Brat was a $60 eBay model off a 1.9 litre Opel. I figured it should be jetted close enough to the same. it does run really well. a little rough on idle yet, but I think I just need to adjust the idle speed up a bit. non-functional tach, so will wing it... felt pretty cool to take a motor, put new headgaskets on it, stripped down intake, and eBay weber. new clutch kit, add rear disc brakes, put it all together, and have it driveable right off the bat... I'm guessing the bad accelerator pump was why the weber was removed from the opel in the first place... I've got a top for the weber that mates to the stock Opel air filter box, and I was able to find a stock open air box at the junkyard, so now I can make my snorkel....

How 2's for 6-lug drill out for 4-lug!!
mcbrat replied to Toyofast's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
just depends on how much you want the wheels to stick out... the Chevy wheels in the pic above set out quite a bit... don't know for sure the width of them, but they've got 30x9.50x15 tires on 'em... I think they set out about 4" past the cut fender the toyota rims Qman has, set nicely... -
How 2's for 6-lug drill out for 4-lug!!

I did mine by the second method you posted basically. I used a front hub with the diagonal studs knocked out. bolted it up to the Chevy 6 lug wheel, then from the back, used the hub as a drill guide. Just used my half inch hand held drill. be sure to have new bits handy, and use some cutting oil. helps if you are strong when doing it this way... I had some sore wrists from having the bit catch many times, and get the drill ripped out of my hands... nothing broken though... then after the holes are drilled, use a die grinder to put the bevel on the holes from the front... -
COOL! talked with a buddy tonight, and I'm taking the Brat over to him Monday night or tuesday, to get the following... custom front bumper w/D rings, a modified brushguard I bought from SubaruBratBoy a long time ago a modified Gen1 large skid plate to start at the front bumper a custom rear bumper w/2" receiver custom rollbar that will be made from 2 Gen1 Roll bars (thus saving my 2 Gen2 rollbars )

Is this hatch 2wd or 4wd?
mcbrat replied to Alliturken's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the 85-89 ea81's had hydraulic lifters. no adjustments, and slightly better lift I think. maybe 2-3 mor hp 84 with auto tranny also had hydraulic lifters. -

mcbrat replied to Alliturken's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah. trim around the headlights (inside of bezel, and the metal holders) all looks to be black, which would make it a 84-89. assuming of course the front end hasn't been redone.... -
put the new accelerator pump diaphram in last night, and solved my leaking gas problem, and put in new wiring for the cooling fans. took it for it's first drive in maybe 14 years! rear disc brakes work well too... has a bit of an exhaust leak, and it sounds like a Harley. the full sized pic of the one on the photos page... took it for a quick bath last night... still lots of Arizona dirt left on it though.....
-
yeah, I believe 4" is what it has to be.....
-
most of the 80's Caddy's have them too... that's where mine came from.... tons of 'em in the yard I go to, but $25 a pop....
-
There's a place on the way to Madison, WI that is called Subaru Heaven.... ShawnW has been there before.....

the biggest (only true one) u-pull-it in Des Moines has been picked over pretty good but still has some things in it.... what are you looking for? I have a pretty decent parts stash

Whats the sputtering all about ??
mcbrat replied to Twowagons's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I believe the Carter-Webber carb she has is different as far as the location of the anti-dieseling solenoid. if there is one, it's not upfront like our wonderfule (NOT) hitachis.... but definitely a good spot to start.... -
it's a 4/3 BYB kit from PK Davis. BFG 27x8.50x14 Mud Terrains... (I wish they still made 'em in that size)
-
if everything is loose, when you actually drop the engine/crossmember to install the blocks, the stock steering slides right off... (this is on the ea81)
-
well, won't technically be mine only here for 25 hours or so 'til it makes it's way east.... 1984 GL 4WD Wagon w/auto tranny from a Turbo Brat....
-
but that'd be the wrong way asa reference, the front lip of the hood on my 84 turbo brat is at 28.5"
-
here you go.... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/diagrams/centerlamp-wire.jpg

I will try. not sure how far I'm pulling this one down right now, as I'm just trying to get it running for an off-road meet in less than a month.... The weber I have came off of a 1.9 litre Opel
-
with normal stock springs, the bottom of the front lip of my 82 Brat hood is at 36.5" hopefully soon I will be installing some different springs, and see how it's affected.... got the Brat out of the garage today, and had it running a while. a few issues have come up 1. heater core (or thereabouts) leak. 2. accelerator pump needs replaced in weber... was leaking gas all over the place UPDATE: weber rebuild kit should be here Monday or tuesday. put new centerlamp switch in, and new centerlamp. works great. new wiring for fans coming soon. freshly painted grill and headlight bezels in place.
