EA71 to EA81- which parts are compatible?
mcbrat replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
axles are the same length for thier respective body styles. so even though it had an ea71 engine, it was an "ea81" body, so it'd have the "ea81" axles. and will work fine.... when you get to the ea82 axles is where you end up with different spline counts for turbo or non.... plus they are longer still than the ea81 axles... -
Mid-Day Friday in Eugene..... ERic was in Roam mode, so didn't talk long... didn't get a damage report.....

EA71 to EA81- which parts are compatible?
mcbrat replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
what year is the Dual range from? if it's an 81-82 dual range, you are stuck with the 8" clutch (200mm) unless you do some fabbing to mount the larger release bearing onto the '82 bearing holder... the 81-82 D/R had a smaller release bearing (same as 2wd) and it does not properly hit the 9" pressure plate becasue the hole in the center of the PP fingers is larger.... as long as you keep the whole ignition system together should be no problem. (if you happen to have one points type disty, and one electronic....) the top bypass outlet on the ea71 waterpump is larger diameter (OD) than the ea81 not sure if it's the water pump or oil pump. but there were 2 different ea71 styles, because starting in '80 some of the ea71's had a fatter engine case that was the same as the ea81.... changed water jackets or something... not totally sure.... -
ea81 tach registers well below the line????
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
it never sees zero. even when it's off, it's below the line.... I thought about the "wires crossed", but when I rev, it goes in the right direction..... just everything is below the line.... if the wires were crossed, would it rev the other direction? -
ea81 fuel pump hard-wire how-to?
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
perfect Tom. She runs now.... after I got it running, I may have uncovered part of the problem.... I think perhaps the feed from the Coil for the tach is bad, as my tach needle sits almost straight down at like -1500 RPMs. it does move up towards the Zero line if I rev it thought.... this same feed to the tach also feeds the FPCU.... I don't have the pressure switch in yet, so it's running like my 78 Brat now.... -
you can still get the Gen1 front air dams. I got one last year on eBay for $25.

ea81 fuel pump hard-wire how-to?
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah, the 82.... thanks for the info.... have to check it out tonight if I can breathe outside. heat index near 110-115. humidity really sucks right now.... -
the passing light (center lamp) just takes a normal H3 bulb, so whatever wattage you can find, will work...

I used the great search function, and it found lots of fule pump related stuff, even real old stuff.... it was great. except I didn't find what I was looking for.... For those of you that have hard wired the fuel pump, where did you tie into the harness at for the wires, and how did you wire a new relay in for the safety feature. i remember that someone had put in a pressure switch on the oil pump to serve as the safety mechanism.... I have my passenger seat out, and the ignition relay below it seems to work okay.... (so much easier in the 78 Brat with the fuel pump right there in the engine compartment )

anyone else have legacy seats in brat???
mcbrat replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
here's the diagram for the 90 Legacy seats.... -
no GL-10 Brats.... you could get a ea81 GL-10, in a coupe, sedan, and wagon(I think) though. Qman has a coupe, and I've gotten interior parts from a sedan. Moosens parted out a sedan also... Most of the ea81T's were GL models, but the GL-10 package on a ea81T was badged a "Turbo-10" the badge even has a part number

82 Brat: fuel pump wiring.... (it's alive!!!) NOT!
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
okay, looked over the whole 82 FSM, and the 83 FSM, and the 84 detailed wiring book, to no avail.... pulled out the Bentley manual, and there was a very detailed schematic for 82 with hitachi ... more detailed, and different than the FSM. this one showed the ground from the pump actually going to the ground, where the FSM had it returning to the FPCU... I found some connectors just like the ones on my fuel pump, and made a new "spacer" connector to fit between the normal connectors, and ground the pump to one of the mounting bolts..... turned the key to the "RUN" position and I could not hear the pump running, but then I tried to start it, and it started, and stayed running!!!! YAY!... idle was almost right. a little slow maybe, but I figure it's not too bad since this is the first time this Brat has run in maybe 14 years.... I dropped in a feshly sealed motor and weber in it..... woo hoo!!! now to finish getting it ready for my off-roading weekend coming up..... -

I have a 90 Legacy Sedan front seat (drivers) in my 82 wagon... brackets are easy to make for the legacy seat..... there is a diagram on the website somewhere... (at least there was...) -

82 Brat: fuel pump wiring.... (it's alive!!!) NOT!
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah, looks like the 82 is a little different. the wires at the pump are the same wires, but in the 82, both the pump and fpcu are fed 12V from the IG. the ground from the pump goes into the fpcu, as well as a wire from the NEG terminal of the coil. obviously, this has been an issue before with this Brat, as the FPCU was mounted to the fron ECU bolt for easy access more tonight after a day at the state fair....... -
