the choke needs 12V. if the housing is getting really warm like that, I'd say your choke heating element needs replaced. it's pulling too much juice, heating up like that, and probably burnt out a wire along the way if it didn't pop a fuse like sm85 suggested....

Iowa MudCoast Road Rally
mcbrat replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Brat's [hill holder] is working... got my parentsa coming down, and weekend visits to prison, so I'm out. plus my 2 vehicles I would take on this are non-running at the moment.... Hmmm... the last time Denis got stuck on a B road, was his prom night I believe.... -

so the oil pump was okay? -
moved to shop talk.... I've been thinking about getting a wire feed welder.... I have a "Hobby Arc" stick welder right now. worked fine for making my utility trailer larger, but won't work too well for sheet metal ... at least not the way I weld

3" Plastic Body Lift Blocks for a Pickup on a Subaru??
mcbrat replied to subystomper's topic in Off Road
on trucks, the body lift is just that. lifting the body off the frame. period. no stresses between those points. on a suby, you are putting blocks between the suspension mounts and the body, and those bolts take the most stress of anything... that kind of stress will compress the plastic and lead to broken bolts, really easily... it's really not that much more to use some 2x3 rect tubing .25 wall, and drill holes through... either route, you are gonna need offset bolt blocks for the tops of the front struts, and a lengthened intermediate steering shaft. -

Coupe Bumper on a Gen2 Brat
mcbrat replied to Twitch de la Brat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
in "stock" form, they are not a direct swap. The 2wd brackets are different. I have mounted one on a Brat though... but it involved a large hose clamp and a few zip ties.... though I believe there were some Brat issues as well that contributed to that mount scenario -
Can I flip my AA wheels? What am I going to break?
mcbrat replied to pyro926's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that should be a common size for those wheels.... are you sure there's not something bent? -
note to self don't break any more oil pumps
mcbrat replied to bheinen74's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

stronger springs for the front of an EA81?
mcbrat replied to Uberoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
RX front springs have a higher spring rate.... and fit right on ea81 struts.... -
actually, it's still a couple inches shorter than my Yukon. it's a couple inches taller than the roof rack on my '09 FXT... with everything else I have going on at the moment, it's probably at least a month away from being ready yet....
-
No on both counts.... but after I get it driveable, I'll find something.... Still to do on it: (probably forgetting stuff) all new brake lines new fuel lines power steering hookup upgraded front brakes bump stop spacers in rear coil retainers installed optima battery to mount on it's side in spare tire tray & mount hook radiator back up paint all new metal rear shocks installed new front pass seat mounts mount jump seat frame and seats new exhaust (it needs to loop around the front like the turbos, but goes to the drivers side instead)

Cage pics Nose To Nose: Blue Brat is 1986 with 3" BYB lift kit and 205/70R14 tires Front Axle New Driveshaft tunnel Rear Driveshaft Front Shocks - Chris used the old strut mounts to make the top mounts... Many thanks to BlueJeep for the awesome fabwork!
-
it's back at my house now... still have plenty left to do to get it drivable... I took some nose to nose shots with my blue Brat today... will post 'em up later tonight.....
-
they are 3.4" taller than stock, giving you a 1.7" lift from where you are at currently.... but they should fit no problem on ea82 wagon..... http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Ok. first up is my '86 Brat. 3" BYB lift kit, rear disc brakes, Genuine Subaru 14" Chromed Alloys. Otherwise, entirely stock yet, even the radio. Only 90,400 miles on it. Dash is perfect, seats are perfect... Purchased it in '99 with 75k or 77k on it.... This one sees no winter salty roads, and no offroading... will be my son's first car.... next up is my '82 Brat. Offroader definitely.... in this pic it had the following... 5" lift (combined BYB, SJR, RX front springs, and some home-brew stuff ) rear disks 5 speed swap, xt6 clutch set-up, custom driveshaft weber 32/36 with 155 mains. MSD 6A Ignition, Accel SuperCoil, recurved distributor ea81 with Delta torque cam and ea71 pistons 27" SSRs on Toyota wheels custom bumpers front/rear, 4500# winch remote oil sender unit welded rear diff probably lots more I'm forgetting..... and after a few years of wheeling, and breaking stuff, and modifying it to be stronger, I finally had enough of the limits of the IFS/IRS/gearing and the breakage I was seeing. needed too much of the skinny pedal to keep up with the others.... so now it looks like this (mostly. more pics soon with bumper and cage, etc...) unlifted it, and put the engine/trans back in their stock locations, and had my fab guru friend Chris (BlueJeep) redesign and fab everything.... 85 Toyota front axle, 87 Toyota rear axle, 4.10 gears PowerTrax Lockright Locker in rear samurai t-case, Toyota driveshafts TrailTough Rear drive disconnect 4 link rear, 3 link front toyota IFS steering box, and crossover steering Subaru power steering pump coil springs are from a Jeep TJ lengthened wheelbase (105". stock is 97") 35" tires

I got my locker installed in the rear 3rd member today (not in the axle yet), and Chris got the back legs of the roll bar done, and finished up some other stuff... will try and post a few more pics later tonight....

it's getting closer.... not too much left yet, and it'll come back to my place for finishing.....
