Power Steering Unit differences
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
which ea81 PS pump? the long bracket style from the ea81 or the one from an ea81T? My long bracket ones don't have any stickers at all. I've had 4-5 of them, and never seen anything. only on the ea82 style I've seen it (and never paid attention to it on the ea81t's I've had. -
Power Steering Unit differences
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
right, but the ea82 ones specify to use ATF. Ben (The dude abides) was running regular PS fluid in his 87, and it was leaking bad. he switched it out to ATF, and the leaks stopped.... I'm guessing there's some reason Subaru specifically says to use ATF on the ea82 PS pumps...... -
Do all the ea82 PS units use ATF as the fluid? I have 2 EA81 Ps pumps, that use regular PS Fluid, but I'm wondering if there's a more readily available pump unit to use that uses PS fluid, and can bolt to the EA81 hydro block...

Power Steering on gen one?
mcbrat replied to the sucker king's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
even those though, the early ea81's didn't have the holes threaded for the pump to attach. but at least the holes are there... I've threaded them before for PS. but for ea71, it's hard to say if the holes are there.... -
Got rid of my Pickup.... ...replaced with a 4Runner
mcbrat replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Non-Soob Off Roading
nice. I've been looking at the ProComps MT and the XMT for my Brat after I run the AT's for a while. -
Well, I (with support from my wife ) am attempting to keep the Brat looking like a Brat. It will have the jump seats in the rear (though not quite the same location, it'll be close...) I could not find any 17" wagon wheels, so I went with something close enough....
-
when switching to the weber 32/36, you will need to find a different intake manifold. the weber adapter only fits the hitachi manifold, not the Carter/webber.
-
woohoo. got my wheels today with correct backspacing... getting the tires mounted tomorrow.....

Help remove stubborn oil pump
mcbrat replied to the sucker king's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
when I had one that wiggled like that, the base plate had already broken... so I kept smacking it until the main part came out, then I used a sturdy screw driver to pry twist out the remains... took a long time, and obviously wasted the pump... and had to clean out the area good of any small chunks -
the module in the electronic disty I put in gave out, so I threw in another one I had laying around. back up and running....

would he need to keep the bell housing off the brat engine ?

there's the Turd Wagon build that was started around the same time as mine... (TheBeastIDrive - Bill O.) there was an XT6 that had Toyota axles front and rear... "Death Hatch" had toy axles front and rear, though I don't know what it's final state was...last I remember they were working on steering. and there's a Brat in the PNW that has a Brat body on a Toy frame and drive train... There's pics of a few here too... all on full frames with different drive trains most likely http://www.indysworld.com/80s/brats/bratcolors/79-lifted.jpg http://www.indysworld.com/80s/brats/bratcolors/cust-brumby2.jpg http://www.indysworld.com/80s/brats/miscphotos/spoiledbrat.jpg

is this a VLSD chunk?pics added
mcbrat replied to monstaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I fixed the photo links in this post, but it's only temporary. IF someone want to save them, and rehost, that'd be great.... or I may grab them and add them to the old static USRM and the Forum Based USRM... -
this isn't the first one.... there's been a few others with solids.... all of which were studied before doing this one....

those side pieces look like they could be the sealed viscous units, but they are kinda "small".... other examples/info: http://www.miata.net/garage/diffguide/index.html http://www.awd.ee/viscous.html http://www.autozine.org/technical_school/traction/tech_traction_4wd_2.htm http://www.stealth316.com/2-awd5.htm and a Really good read here.... http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=116207 -
you gotta love the sound made from a sledge whacking against the unibody of a vehicle up on jackstands all around, and the nice sounds made as it echos off all the houses along the street

I probably would *IF* they were straight

patience.... it's getting a lot closer now, but I'd guess it's March sometime when it's complete.... I just got some of the parts yesterday for the trackbar and drag link. still waiting on the tie-rod and pitman arm. and the wheels. the wheel order got messed up, so had to order them again... (wrong backspacing)... this is the biggest holdup right now probably, as we need to get my tires mounted and on so the bumpstops can be set, and the sheetmetal cut, and the steering clearancing needed.... a lot of the decisions on stuff has needed to wait until parts were done, to see what was feasible for the next step..... still need to decide on shock mount locations which will impact whether or not I use long travel shocks.
-
actually, it hasn't been bent yet, however, the shifter is has indexing tabs, where it installs, and you can take the shifter out, and turn it 180 deg, and reinstall. that's how mine is done at this point, but will still need to be bent to clear the pass seat better. you'll want to install some new urethane "shifter sheets" (bushings) as well, because the stock ones apparently have a tendency to wear to a point where it won't let you shift the t-case.....
-
Yes, it disconnects the rear driveshaft from the t-case, which would in effect make it able to be driven in front wheel drive, just like a stock Brat, but with all the gearing options.... http://www.trailtough.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=89&category_id=12&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=53 Yes, the stock subaru 4WD system is FWD, then it engages the rear when put into 4WD.
-
I missed a pic....
-
It was all stock stuff, as I had a mess of spares at the time.... by stock stuff, I mean the hard stuff, that went to the valvecovers. if you use any soft tubing, it will collapse when it heats up and is under the manifold vac. if it collapses like that, it'll close the loop, and start pressurinzing and spewing oil
-
whenI had mine hooked up wrong on mtngrizzly, and it was spewing oil like that, I changed my set-up to this (on right), and it stopped spewing oil....
-
those are stock... I think it was 77 or 78 when they went to the non-u-joint axles.
