Iowa Campout at Saylorville Lake anyone?
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
yeah, especially if 10 subarus get stuck on a "road" that truly is just a dirt path between a farmers fields. and the farmer happens to also be a law enforcement officer.... and the farmers brother sees you and lets the farmer know He was actually pretty cool about everything when all was said and done.... if you search the past threads on "Midwest 2" you'll see -
Help me save my GL!
mcbrat replied to Love_em_when_there_old's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
it's an '85 GL Hatch, ea81. 2 fuel filters to replace. one under the car, by the fuel pump, the other is the vapor seperator in the engine compartment. The one under the car is the most neglected (forgotten) one. I had a wagon with 145k on it, and an original undercoat covered fuel filtered still on it.... anyway, be sure both are replaced, and dump a can of SeaFoam in the fuel tank to help clean up the carb/lines. the filter under the car should catch all. there won't be any in-tank filters, etc.... there should be a drain bolt in the bottom of the tank. drain the fuel/loose crud out of it , and rinse with some clean gas to make sure the loose stuff is out..... -
there's a link to some gokart and frame pics on the subarus of the 80's page. (link in the menu bar above, or in my sig)

Replace 4wd disty w/ 2wd disty?
mcbrat replied to GR86BRAT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
supposedly the advance curve is different on the 2wd disty, but there has been debate on whether or not it's true..... -

you'll want to check all fluids.... My '82 came from AZ in 2003 with 93k on it. it's last registered date was '88. engine was totally locked up, trans was empty of fluid (though I think these 2 things may have been done purposefully). brake fluid was and full of gunk and a ugly gray color. suprisingly, the radiator, though empty, was fine, and I'm still running the original radiator! when I replaced the ball joints, there was a tiny scorpion body shell in the cavity in the knuckle! but it sure was nice working with non-rusty bolts..... -

The Kid is 11 now. wife will not go. that's a "boys weekend" and a weekend of peace and quiet for her Kurt (Syrinx) has come up from St. Lous before and brought his daughter, but last I talked to him, they had another kid on the way, and he was leaving that day for Georgia and then deployment..... -
Chris sent some pics of the steering test fit. stock frame rail has been cut away. new frame rail section will go straight towards the front, not angled out like the stock rails...

definitely a family deal. we usually don't have many. and at least at the Saylorville area, dogs are allowed, because Chef Time brought his the last time we had one.... and it won't be until spring or summer, but I wanted to start talking about it now, because most of the campsites get reserved pretty quickly, and its harder to get a bunch together.... -
all 78-80 Brats came with ea71 (1600 engines) in '81 you could have eather the 1600 (DL, ea71) or 1800 (GL, ea81). in '80 or so they switched the bellhousing over to a "fat case", which alllowed the bellhousings to interchange between the ea71/ea81 I believe... anyways, the '81 GL Brat had a slightly different engine crossmember, but a ea71 should go right in, but I'm not sure your trans would bolt up to it, or if your ea81 bellhousing would fit on the older ea71.... but if your ea81 is a good runner, I wouldn't worry about it "going out"

this one was a bit pricier than I'm used to, but it really is in pretty good shape. $700. I then spent $200 on complete new custom exhaust, and threw in a spare disty and tune up parts..... so I'm into it for about $950 -
just saw this... I did sell the turbo outback, but here is what the build consisted of.... (I didn't build) Basically it's a destroked 2.5, turbo'd. (comes in around 2.4 liters, with 8:1 compression ratio) Specs when I sold it: ej25 block halves ej25 flat top pistons ej22t crank and rods ej25 DOHC HLA heads ('96) ej20g intake manifold ej20g turbo (vf8) ej20g 440 injectors ej22t crossover pipe WRX top mount intercooler ('02) TurboXS bypass valve 3" bellmouth catless downpipe, remainder was ej22t exhaust. All run off a ej22t ecu with an ej22t engine harness wired in with the stock outback body harnesses. and it was faster than my '09 FXT

I figure if we want to do a campout sometime, we should start planning now as the spots get grabbed up quickly.... in the past, I have reserved a number of spots together (4 sites max per credit card/person) The campsites are nice, and the facilities are good.... I've tried to have a Show/Shine at the same time, with some of the other local Soob enthusiasts showing up, but nothing really big.... the campsites are usually like $16-$18 per night. If interested, please respond in this thread with date options, etc.... We could even go out to a different campground area where there's more gravel/dirt roads.... maybe a return to the MudWest 2 site let's discuss.....
