picking up some street tires Sunday.... BFG All Terrains....

Hmm. yeah. since the engine is back in it's normal place now, I have to take the 2 .5" carb spacers off, and take off the intake spacer as well... this set-up worked good, as it kept the air filter behind the rad, but out of the way of the mud/water.... plus it has the lovely aesthetics of the neon orange duct tape...

when this motor gives it up, that'll be next.... (ej22) I'm gonna SPFI this motor first though..... But not until next summer....

The Turd Wagon: Tcase, straight axle 85 DL inside
mcbrat replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Off Road
I've seen guys with 8x8 or 6x6 (whatever it takes to match the fender height)chunks of lumber angled and laid down next to the fenders. then they drive up and over the fender on the blocks, then back down once past the fenders.... -
Anybody heard anything? a friend at work saw this morning driving in towards downtown Des Moines, 3 very nice Gen2 vehicles. Looking freshly waxed he said... a white Brat with a topper a red Brat a blue wagon I occasionally see a wagon (about 1 a year) and even less often a Brat (belonging to someone I don't know) about 1 every 3-4 years....

But why waste a freshly built engine with only 5k miles on it....? For the amount of wheeling I do, and the terrain, this should work nicely... Now if I wanted to go to monster sized tires, then yeah, other stuff would have to be done My friend Chris who's the brains behind this build figures it should end up at (weight wise) about the same percentage of Toyota weight, as Toyota owns of Subaru, so it's all good

probably need to come forward and loop to the drivers side. like a flipped turbo cross-over....
-
Took a few more pics tonight with my good camera, when I went over to drain the gas tank, and pick up the no longer needed soob parts... Chris already had the front axle positioned under it to get a feel for placement, etc... The exhaust definitely needs changed up front....

3 hp Briggs & Stratton, 4 stroke, pull start.

I'll be running the '85 toy front axle, with the '87 4-runner IFS steering box. Chris (the design/fab guru) will be deciding whether to go 3 link or 4 link in the front.

this was the one I bought from moosens, then sold to subarubrat this is one from ebay in California this is the one I got in Wisconsin and after I added a seat...
-
what do you think...? Just a little more bashing? actually, those are a little bigger than what'll be on it.... moving rear axle back a bit, and the front axle forward more... probably looking at 105" wheelbase... and will definitely be losing sheetmetal....
-
The deconstruction begins.... Definitely need to take the carb and intake spacers off... or cut a big hole in the front of the hood actually, SPFI will be coming next summer probably....
-
Parts mentioned in the first post.... also purchased a Samurai transfer case... and a few years back, I had purchased a '85 toyota from a junkyard. parted it out, and here's what's left after finally removing the axles. I also got a wider rear axle out of a '87 4-runner so it at least matches the width of the soob rear.... and then cut up and ready for the recycler...

Okay, so a bit of history on this Brat... I got it in Feb. '03, came from AZ, engine was trashed, no fluids anywhere... a complete build was in order.... Put a 4/3 lift in, rear disk brakes, complete brake system flush, etc.... finally got an engine and in Aug, it moved under it's own power for the first time in probably 14 years... Since then, it's gotten lots of decals, lots of dents, suspension changes, lift changes, etc.... all making it better each time, but always leading to the next weakest link.... Here it was in July of 2008...

yeah, should work. I've got a wagon tank in my '82 Brat... well , at least for a few more days.... the fitting sizes were a different size, so I have to put in a small coupler line to mate them up.....
-
well, kinda varies.... location seems to have a lot to do with it.... I bought and sold one for $200 without ever touching it... a complete Brat gokart can sell for $230 - $900... I've seen 'em go high on the coasts. I've seen the shells go for $100-$150 too. I got my complete one (less seat) for $230 in Racine WI. I've got a brochure for them too. They were available in a multitude of colors if ordered, but I've only seen Red, Blue, and Yellow.... Red being the most common....

yes, I'm running solid lifters in my hydro block. I think they need to be installed before the block halves go together though... -
I know, I know.... pics.... maybe later tonight... The engine and tranny crossmembers are back in stock locations. definitely need to remove the couple of carb spacers from the weber... complete rear subframe is removed and all front suspension/steering stuff removed. still need to remove the gas tank ande-brake handle....
-
got the '87 4 runner rear axle, and steering box.... I'll try to get the pics to start showing the build as we go.....
