Need measurement please - stock Gen2 Brat
mcbrat replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
looks good. thanks! -
not without that bolt I can't get a drill centered on the bolt remains to drill it out... I'm gonna check and see if I can get to it through the adjuster under the bed... actually, if I cut the adjuster off, that would do the trick .... hmmm....
-
one side broke, and I've added rear coilovers, and the side with the torsion bar (clocked too) is making it a bit too high... the bolt that holds the arm in snapped off....
-
I can't see a whole lot out my rear view mirror... (spare tire carrier compounds issue) anyway, it's definitley stiff. even with the weight of the rearend, with the tire carrier and spare, I still have 13.5" of clearance under the diff with 27" SSRs... I'm running a welded rear still, and anytime I make a corner it raises even further and starts popping. I'm not sure if I should drop the diff a bit, or if my customaxle will take care of it....
-
yeah, it's a lot stiffer, plus I had some issues. I made a bad decision when attempting to disable the one working torsion bar. it's fixed up now, but was scary for a bit... I was unable to disable the one remaining torsion bar, so now it looks like it's sitting higher on that side.... have to get it on level ground first to tell.... I'll be driving it tonight to see how it rides better, and to see if I need a diff drop plate, or if my hybrid ea81/82 rear axles will be enough....
-
well, coilovers are in (thanks Gary) .... too much weight in the back for the torsion bars... I ended up putting my 3" lift brackets (shocks) back in (didn't use them with the Ranchos) , and drilling new holes in the coilover top mount cup to fit the lift brackets. It's definitely got lift in the rear now

Weber install: backfire from intake.
mcbrat replied to TheYeti's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
you can go back in and grind off to match them, but I've used both ways without issue.... any chance to get a detailed pic? -
probably one of my comments... I think every ea81 I've had and driven regularly has had some wiring issue. and not a lot of people like to mess with wiring. granted the ones I've driven the most have come from hot areas. (CA and AZ, which may take it's toll on the casing a bit more. If someone is looking for reliability and they are not going to do their own work, I would point them to a newer soob. Legacy or newer, especially around my neck of the woods, where it's very rare to even see a soob in the junkyards these days, and even rarer for it to be a ea82 (1 or 2 a year), and I haven't seen an ea81 come into a junkyard here in the last 4 years probably..... what wires? fan, IGN circuit in the fusebox, horn, power windows. not necessarily hard to fix if you like wiring, but costly if you're taking it to a shop around here to someone whos never seen an old soob before....

valve clearances correct...? was the carb put on a previously fine running engine? vacuum line from disty to the front of the carb? can you post a large detailed pic of the carb and connections? -

should probably put one on. Mtn Grizzly was running oddly, idle was all over the place...backfiring through carb... the spring had come off. replaced, and back to normal operation... -

how do you have the throttle return spring installed? sounds like fuel is still dribbling actually, not lean..... -

the rule for the mixture screw is start 2 turns out I thought... I used to run mine at almost 4 turns out.... you shouldn't need a pressure regulator with the stock pump, only if you have an aftermarket pump that puts out too much.... -

how many turns is your idle mixture screw turned out? what's the psi of the fuel pump you installed? did you pull the fuel line nipple from the hitachi, and put it on the weber so you have a return line? -
I had similar issues, and it was a bad spot in the wiring where it comes out of the cab to go down to the pump....

how far will a toasted front diff make it?
mcbrat replied to idosubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
what kind of racket? I lost a tooth off a front ring gear once while going 65 on an interstate. it sounded like a helicopter was flying over me. As I slowed down it got worse and wors, to the point where it was undrivable because the whole car was shaking violently.... I got about 2 miles.... -
for those that don't know, I sold my hatch back to Max, the guy I got it from last year.... here's some really cool pics of it that he took.... http://www.awdpirates.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24727&highlight=hatch
-
you'd be hard pressed to find one at a junk yard around here.... there's only been 2 ea82's come through during the last year or so at Wrench 'n Go. might find some at the other places.... but doubtful. Carney's in ames may have something....

Fender Question on 84 Brat...
mcbrat replied to Huck369's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes, the front edge (behind the turn signal bezel, is larger on the 80-81 fenders. it stops you from mounting the later quad bezels, but you can trim it off and it will fit fine for 82-84 bodie styles (and brat and hatch of course) -
Fender Question on 84 Brat...
mcbrat replied to Huck369's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Huck, 78-81 are Gen1 brats, 82-87 are Gen2 brats. and '81 fender will not fit a gen2 brat... here's some nice reading for you check out the brat Encyclopedia on the Brats Page http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/brats/brats.html (link at top of forums as well) -
I usedto run that size a lot too. they are harder to find now though it seems.

so, before today, I've only seen 2 Gen2soobs this trip. Shawn's wagon, and the hatch I sold to Max Today, different story. Stopped in to See The Sucker King, then drove past his house where a hatch and a gen1 wagon were resting, then as I was driving up hiway 7 to EP, I saw a nice 85+ dark blue Brat heading back down the mountain....
