  1. I have the battery blanket from my last car to put in this weekend so I might be going with that and the oil pan heater. The winters here aren't so bad as the last place I live in northern Manitoba, minus -50c for months at a time, so I might be good without the block heater. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one without one, thought I might be going selectively blind under the car!
  2. Sadly I haven't owned enough of them yet to be sure, though I guess that's a comment on the quality! I think I might try taking another look tonight but if there's not one I need to find somewhere online to order from. I'm hoping to not have to make a six hour round trip to a dealership for a $40 part. Thanks for the input!
  3. I have a bit of a weird question. January of this year I picked up a 2010 Outback up here in Canada that was originally from the USA, New York State I believe. Plug hanging out the front, just assumed it was for the block heater. I'm under the car recently and see a heating pad on the oil pan, follow the cord and low and behold it's the cord going up the front that I used last winter. I looked around and cannot find another cord anywhere. Unless I'm mistaken, don't all Outbacks come standard with block heaters? I looked up the location of the frost plugs to be sure and I'm sure I was looking at the right spot. On my previous Legacy I had to put a block heater in but I was near a dealership and picked it up there. Since I'm a few hours from one I took a look at Rock Auto and cannot find a listing for one. Am I going crazy? I searched through here but couldn't find anything or anyone else with the same question. Are the block heaters hiding somewhere on the 2010 Outbacks and does Rock Auto not sell them? Thanks in advance!
  4. I'd like to thank eveyone that helped me pick out a good replacement for my 2001 Legacy. This 2010 Outback will do my family well for years (hopefully) to come. She's pretty!
  5. No problem, but all the advice is coming from the great members of this forum. Thanks everyone. With regards to our 2001, we bought it fairly cheap with 210,000km on it and now leaks about a litre of coolant a year. I wasn't really sure where it was coming from but with the comments here I'm guessing it's the head gaskets. Monday we're checking out the 2010 Outback I mentioned so the head gaskets are less of a worry. It's high kilometre but that makes it affordable. I'll ask what other work was done at the same time as the timing belt as The Dude mentioned. That's too bad about the Tribeca though, looks nice but I figured there must be a reason why they don't make them anymore. Thanks for the heads up! How is the coolant conditioner that Rooster2 mentions? Some people have said it's great but I've read other places that it's not recommended.
  6. No luck so far, the wife is being a bit pickey and vetoed the older models, a couple no replies and she read an article about the head gaskets (which she was horrified to find out included our 2001). Now I'm looking at a 2010 Outback with 190,000km on it and has had the timing belt replaced at 100,000km. The pictures look good so I'm talking with the owner to take a look at it. It's fairly high kilometerage for the year but the only way we could afford one that new.
  7. Right now we're driving a 2001 Subaru Legacy L, have been for three years now and I really enjoy the car. The offspring is four. Even though it is the most, something about the Tribeca catches my eye but I've heard almost nothing about it before starting my search. I'll have to check into the fuel thing, doin't really feel like spending an extra $0.20/litre! I've been reading up on the HG issues, of which I only knew of in more general terms. I'm happy we've neve rhad an issue, potentially the previous owner had the work done. Thanks for all the advice so far!
  8. Hello, I posted a few days ago about my car that won't pass safety. We're looking at a few used models online and since I've always gotten good advice on here I'm wondering what people's opinions on the five were looking at are, if there's any to avoid or a gem or two in there. I haven't seen any in person but the pictures online don't show any noticeable damages or rust and all are wagons/crossover. A couple have been brought up from the States in the past, if that makes a difference. -2009 Tribeca (216,000 km), $10,995 (dealer) -2008 Outback 2.5i (205,000 km), $8,995 (dealer) (American) -2005 Outback 2.5XT Wagon (230,000 km), $6,000 (private) (American; turbo and timing belt replaced at 160k; $3k of work done in 2014 with receipts) -2004 Impreza (194,000 km), $3,000 (private) (Timing belt replaced at 150k) -2004 Impreza (192,000 km), $3,500 (private) We're a family of three, mostly short in city trips with the occassional long distance trip a few times a year. Thank you in advance!
  9. Hello, My family and I have recently moved to a Saskatchewan, Canada from Manitoba, Canada for work. To register our 2001 Legacy Wagon (241,000km) here it needed a safety, I took it in today and it failed for a rusted out bumper, leak between the catalytic converters and rusted through on a spot in the wheel well. Not to mention a cracked power steering belt and leak in the system apparently. The place has a good reputation and doesn't do body work themselves so I don't think they're taking me for a ride. I'm going to talk to a couple body shops tomorrow and see how much the body work would costs as that's outside of my skill set. I don't know if I'm looking at $500 or $5,000. The power steering stuff I could probably do myself but that seems to be the least of the issues. If the cost is high enough I'll be looking for a new Subaru, a sad thing as this is the first car I've ever owed! Should I be able to convince my wife to let me park it in the back yard for parts, would anyone be able to tell me what the newest year Legacy is that has a really high compatibility parts wise with a 2001 Legacy Wagaon? Or, for that matter, other Subarus...not sure if the Forester or something uses a lot of the same parts. Thank you!
  10. I had a similar issue a few weeks ago. The solution that was recommended to me was to bang on the starter a number of times. I also cleaned the battery terminal contacts which couldn't have hurt.
  11. Luckily there's not much room in there to hit it too hard but I'll use some wood next time. Thanks for the advice. Hopefully it lasts the winter and come spring i can try a rebuild. Thanks again everyone!
  12. Well it's been a few days now of no trouble starting. Thank you all for the advice! I gave the starter a good number of hits with a hammer and cleaned up the terminals. Since then no issue, even in the cold and sitting over night without being plugged in. I have a safety on Monday to pass so this is perfect. Thanks again!
  13. It's been warm since the night of my last post so the car has started easily but tonight it's dropping to -15c. I'm going to give it a good wack tonight for good measure and then again in the morning if it needs it. Hopefully that solves it.
  14. I'm not sure about Imprezas but the Legacy's replaceable filter is under the hood just in front of the driver, metal object the same shape as your replacement but not necessarly the same colour with two hoses going into it. There may be two, one in the tank and one under the hood. Usually the tank ones aren't replaced but I could be wrong.
  15. It's an automatic with 239,000km, purchased it three years ago with 209,000 on it. With the initial startup after cold it won't start in neutral or park when the brake is pressed but let go of the brake and I believe it has started in both park and neutral. There aren't any CEL lights but I just replaced the knock sensor a couple weeks ago. The downstream O2 pops up every couple of months and then but it's pretty much welded on so I might have to get a mechanic to change it. I was thinking the neutral safety switch but I'll give the starter a good wack tomorrow morning and see if that fixes it. I'll let you know!
  16. Hello, I'm having a really weird problem and having been able to pull up anything in my repair book, online or on the forum here. A lot of that has to do with not really sure how to word the searches. The temperature has started dropping and ever since it got below zero if the car has sat for a few hours while at work or over night when you go to start it (pressing the brake, turning the key) nothing happens, no crank, no start, nothing. If you let go of the brake and turn the key it starts up. Drive five minutes, turn off the car, go into a store or something and when you come back the car starts fine with pressing the brake. The other morning I tried not pressing the brake when starting the first time of the day and nothing happened. Tried with brake and nothing happened. Without brake, nothing. Moved the gear shifter through the gears a few times and nothing. This may have been a coincidence and may not have started if I did my usual first try with the brake. My wife tried a couple hours later in the morning and it started up fine. On occassion you have to use your foot to raise the brake to get it to start. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the times when it starts it kind of half dies before fully starting. I'm thinking it's the neutral safety switch but the brake thing and the starter being weird on occassion is throwing me off. As I said it only started once the temperature dropped. This has happened on a couple occassions since we bought the car three years ago, maybe once or twice in a winter but never constantly. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for any help. If there's a previous topic I missed my apologies! Edit: It's a 2001 Legacy.
  17. I stuck it in today. I ended up drilling a hole on the passengers side and had lots of wire in the kit to make it the driver's front corner where everything else is plugged in. I took a couple pictures to show any other people interested but the camera died before I couple take the rest. I'll take more this week and post them.
  18. I'm dreading the upcoming cold, so is my 2001 Subaru Legacy as it gets to about -50c or so here. This has led me to buy a Little Buddy Interior Car Warmer (900w). Anyone installed one before? It looks relatively straight forward in theory but I was wondering about best location to install and best spot to drill through the fire wall. Thanks!
  19. I just a oil pan heater on there for this winter and it makes a huge difference in getting the car moving and heat coming into the car. I only used the adhesive on the pad and it seems to be sticking on there even after a long trip.
  20. I followed these steps and had no real issues. Took me a while to do it since it was my first time and I was taking it slow but could easily be done in the time frame stated. Thanks!
  21. Just as a long after update, the kit came with a sealant can. I put that in after the second can of coolant and it seemed to seal it up. I'll see next summer if it holds. Might replace the o-rings if it starts leaking again, if not then I won't bother. Thanks all for your help!
  22. I had checked the rad after we got to our destination initially and it appeared full. The engine would have been a little warm, cooled down enough to open it safely but I guess warm enough that the air hadn't worked it's way back up because it looked full. I checked it Tuesday morning and was able to add some more coolant into it. We didn't have a problem on the way home, either it just needed topping up (most likely) or some intermittant problem that is dormant at the moment. Feel a bit silly if it only needed coolant but hopefully this thread will help someone else in the future! Thanks all for your help and advice.
