  1. I have an '89 DL wagon that looks very similar. I have had no luck finding interior parts, so I am repainting and refurbishing as much as I can. John
  2. Good point Wagonist. I did not read the fuse legend. It would in fact have practical benefits tho only need one kind of fuse. This being my first Japanese car and my first Subaru, I obviously have a lot tip learn! John
  3. It's an '89 DL wagon, the style with sealed beams not composite head lights. Every fuse in the fuse box is supposed to be a 15 amp fuse? Hmm. I guess I'd just never seen a car or truck where all the circuits in the harness had the same amperage fuses. But I'm learning that subaru does things differently! Lol John
  4. I've never seen anyone do that! All I can think is he was stranded in the middle of nowhere, or he got them on sale, or he didn't know jack about cars. John PS: hope I don't have a bunch of shorts to run down...
  5. Hey All, So I got to looking at the fuse box in my '89 DL, and noticed that some PO had replaced ALL the fuses with 15 amp fuses!! Is there ANY legitimate reason to do this, other than the most dire of dire emergencies, or to have one wrapped in foil like I found? Going to have to address that ASAP. John
  6. Hey All, It wasn't till I got my dash out, that I even realized what the clock in my dash was. Obviously, it's not working. It's this a common failure item for this model? If so, can it be replaced? Not a big deal. Just wondering. John
  7. Dude. You just threw me into a mild stationary panic, wondering if my new JVC tuner would fit the dash of my '89 DL. I ran and grabbed the DIN chassis and stereo receptacle out of the dash. It fits. The thread in fitting the iPhone/iPod in place of the stock digital clock is pretty cool. John
  8. Hey All, After reading these threads, I'm thinking I'll try to fish new wire to the speakers. I have a test light, so I will try to find the switched hot and constant hot. Thanks for the advice! John
  9. That's hysterical! Love it! Thanks for posting! John
  10. Thanks Guys! i will have to study on this. i'm kind of hopeless on wiring...and thanks for the link to the other thread. i just find it strange that there's a green wire in the harness which is cut like all the others, but doesn't show up on the wiring diagram. it's a solid dark green... john
  11. Hey All, I thought as long as I have the dash out, out would be a good time to get the wiring ready for the stereo I'm going to put in. The car came to me with no stereo, and of course the PO had cut off the stock wiring plugs. The car in question, is an'89 DL wagon. Now I have three manuals by Haynes and Chilton with wiring diagrams in them. Two of them barely acknowledge that Subaru put stereos in cars, and none of them seem to know there was a DL model. So. What I need, is a diagram or color codes as to what the wires in the harness are for. I found one diagram online that seemed to be alright (it was for a '90 Loyale) until I realized it didn't show the solid green wire in my harness. At any rate, if you have the info, or happen to have the stock stereo plug, any help would be appreciated. John
  12. If you're like me, everything is harder, costs more and takes longer than you think it will... John
  13. Hmm...Not sure I get what he's driving at. I agree, I think the Speedo should be straight forward. To do the fuel gauge, you could either pull the tank sender and adjust it that way, or fill the tank and adjust accordingly. For the temp, my hope is with the switch on, engine not running, the value should be zero, so that might work. We'll keep after it. This weekend's supposed to be warmer, so maybe I can take a run at it. John
  14. Be aware, there are two different styles. I found this out the hard way on eBay. One style is for sealed beam headlights, the other is for the large plastic composite headlights. I need a left side for the seaLed beam style if anyone has one.... John
  15. Hey Skishop, the pulley wobbles and grinds when you turn it, so pretty sure the clutch is toast. I'm like you, I'd just as soon replace what needs to be replaced and do the job once. I figure if I start collecting parts a little at a time, by the time summer's here I should have them collected. Thanks for the advice & info! John
  16. Thanks Skishop! so in your opinion, should the TXV be replaced? john
  17. i went out to the interweb on this topic, and found a LOT of people having trouble re-installing their needles. not cool. i guess i'll leave the plastic face off for now, and adjust as i go. john
  18. Yikes. I was kind of afraid of that. John
  19. before i go, Dinky26, if your lens is scratched or faded badly, you might want to move up the force continuum on polish. the maguires did a pretty good job, but not perfect. almost wish i'd used something a little more agressive. john
  20. ok. that seems to be fixed. i'm going back to bed i think.
  21. Hmm...on my kindle is says i moved the photos. on my laptop, they display fine. are you guys seeing all the photos? this has been one of those days...
  22. Hey All, in the spring, i would like to repair the air conditioner on my '89 DL wagon. i'm sort of confused as to whether my A/C is factory, or dealer installed. what i can tell you, is the compressor is mounted outboard of everything on the accessory drive. there is a prominent metal tag riveted on the passenger side of the engine bay that states the system uses R-12 refrigerent. obviously, R-12 is obsolete now, thanks to the EPA. so. as i start collecting the various parts to refurb this system (my plan is to install the parts myself then have a shop charge the system), and change over to R-134, what are the parts that are absolutely necessary, and which are merely a good idea? i was told once on a GM A/C system, that the orifice tube would need replaced (whatever that is). i know the clutch is shot on my current compressor, and i think that i will need the receiver and dryer? opinions and info welcome! john
  23. Hey All, decided as long as my dash was out, i would spruce up my gauge cluster a bit. i used some Testors orange flourescent model paint to refresh the needles and face plate, and some Maguires plastic polish to remove some scratches from the clear cover. looks much better in my opinion. if i pull off this dash thing, they will sing songs about me for a thousand years! question: the needles don't seem to index in any particular fashion; just push onto a round shaft. if i set them to their lowest values (ie: cold, empty, 0 mph) will they self index when they receive signal from the sensors/speedo cable? what say you?
