  1. Over the last two days I was able to make some progress. I went to the local bar supply store and bought 20 pounds of dry ice. Once I got it home, I smashed it all up and spread it around on top of all the old sound deadening material. After the old nasty material got cold enough it just popped off with a few hits of a hammer. Underneath all the old material there was a few spot of minimal surface rust. Which I dealt with using a wire brush on a power drill and a quick coat of Rustoleum black paint. Once I got into painting mode I got a little carried away as you can see most of the interior floor is now black. I think I must have taken nearly 15 pounds of old nasty sound deadener out of the cab. I didn't take any pictures of the actual frozen mayhem but it was fun and DIRTY work. After the paint dried I made a few rubber grommets with some thick rubber to cover the factory floor plug holes. I used some silicone caulking in order to create a water tight seal. Next time I plan on laying down the new hush mat I bought. But here are a couple pictures. It's the first time its sat in the sun in at-least a year. 2. Need: 78 Brat Passenger side Front Turn signal (the one right next to the headlight at the front of the car) 78 Brat Side Mirrors
  3. I've got a lead on 2 Brats that I believe are just wasting away. I might be able to get my hands on them and use them for parts. Would anyone be interested in them if I tried parting them out?
  4. So I went to this place, (http://www.rpmrons.com/Subarukits.html) and it looks like they sell everything I would need to rebuild the EA71 thats sitting in my 78 Brat. Unforunatly when I called them a lot of the parts are no longer available. Does anyone have a lead on a kit that I can buy that has all the engine internals actually in stock? I find it hard to believe you can't buy pistons in the correct sizes anymore. But please, any direction would be appreciated.
  5. Anyone have a pair laying around? I need to replace the FORD mirrors the previous owner had installed....
  6. Plan for tonight. 1. prep ashtray and ashtrak trim surround for black re-spray (whoever painted it black before did a awful job) 2. remove both bucket seats 3. remove carpet Here are some pictures of the tear down. I was able to strip the god awful black pain on the ashtray, and re-install the now clean dash cover. Much much better. ][/url] Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr The carpet is pretty nasty, so that's going in the trash. Also, there is a lot of what looks to be thick cardboard floor coverings. All of that is pretty much dry, cracked and just falling apart. So all those parts are going to get trashed also. The plan is to get the Brat over to an upholstery shop and have them carpet everything.
  7. I'm planning on pulling the motor and doing some sort of a tear down. I'll be sure to post pictures. My friend and I were talking and we think maybe the valve retainer let go. But really who knows lol. I need to start making a list of the things that the Brat needs. So far I can tell already that the mirrors are wrong. They have FoMoCo stamped into them...
  8. This forum automatically formats it. You can go directly to my flikr page, it might work for you that way. http://www.flickr.com/photos/48004531@N06/
  9. Okay, so I did a little more cleaning today. I took off the god awful "3way" speakers that were just screwed into the door panels. I also took out the larger speaker that was installed under the glove box. I don't really know too much, heck I don't know anything about Brats. Do either of those speakers look factory? I highly doubt it but I really have no clue. Anyways the dash is pretty badly cracked but at least its clean now. I also need to clean the dash mat. I really think there is a panel or something missing from below the glove box. I saw a photo of a Brat that had AC and there was some panel there (which isn't on mine). The wiring under the steering column is pretty messy. Was that tachometer something that was from Subaru? ( I doubt this also). If not I am going to remove it. I didn't really know what to take pictures of but here are a few snaps I took. I'm finding all sorts of things in this car.... 10. If you've been following this thread, I'm creating a new one in a proper location and I will attempt to document the build of my Brat. Please see thread here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/142864-1978-subaru-brat-from-death-to-life-and-everything-in-between/
  11. Hey all, I've had Subaru's for the last 8 years or so but this is my first old school one. I just picked up a nice 1978 Brat. Well I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. This is one clean car (except for the interior. Its pretty rough). The motor on this one is toast. I'll try to take a picture of why in a minute but until then here are some quick pictures. Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr The goal for this car is to get it back in running condition and enjoy it for what it is. I believe the interior used to be brown but the previous owner did some painting of some of the panels black. I also ripped out the nasty speakers from the door panels. Is there anything that looks off that anyone can tell right away? Just added the picture of the end of a valve that wanted to say hello.
  12. Okay guys, here it is. The car was repainted some point in it's life, but it was done pretty well. I just got done wiping it down and ripping out the speakers that were just screwed into the door panels. I also put some protect-ant (not armor-all) on all of the trim and rubber (except tires). I think the interior is pretty tired and needs help. Not sure what panels are missing, hopefully someone can shed some light. Tell me what you guys think? Really the only damage that this car has is the front passenger turn signal / fender / corner of the hood. All in all, almost zero rust and it looks damn good. http://www.flickr.com/photos/48004531@N06/sets/72157638500708473/
  13. ea71 motor, Shipping to 91324? I know you mentioned you wouldn't ship it, but would you reconsider? PM maybe we can work something out.
  14. Wow, I hooked the trailer up to go take a look at the car and the guys dad refused to go below 1000. Oh-well. Thanks for all the help guys.
  15. Almost. Unless the guy wants too much. But what is too much for a Brat that needs a new engine?
  16. Ideally I would like to find the EA71 motor to do a simple swap. I say simple but I've never even done an engine pull or install before. I found on ebay a complete rebuild kit for about $400 but that would only help if the block was in okay shape. I should be picking this thing up tomorrow. Stay tuned for a photo overload.
  17. Thanks Tom. I'll check there first. Some of the information that website pulls up is a little bit on the thin side. Would you suggest swapped a whole new motor in or try to rebuild it with good parts?
  18. More info. 78 Brat, non-turbo, blue, with rear shell. Supposedly it was restored 20 years ago or so. Interior is supposed to be super clean, no accidents, original paint. BUT one of the pistons went through the block. So I'm assuming I will need a whole new motor. Anyone have any suggestions on who I can contact for something of this magnitutde?
  19. Here's a tiny bit more info. Its a 78 Brat, non-turbo. That's about all I know at this point.
  20. Now I'm even more excited to take a look at it this weekend. I'll keep you guys posted. Might have a fresh face around here soon.
  21. Supposedly the guy tells me it just died one day while he was driving and the mechnic he took it to told him it needs a new motor. I guess that could mean anything from the oil pan fell out, to a rod through the block to god knows what. Whats the going rate on junkyard motors? Any clue? I guess I could take it apart myself and rebuild it. Honestly, how hard can it be
