Hi all, I've got my transmission over at the re builder and he is having trouble finding one or two gears for a full rebuild. Just wanted to consult the guru's here to see if anyone could lend a hand with a place to buy new gears. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. -Best, Spicy

Update: Metal chunks came out while draining the transmission. Definitely broken teeth. Not sure how that happened since I was putting along at about 30 mph on the street. I assume from all the years the metal just decided it had had enough. The transmission is at the builders place now. While its getting redone, we will have fresh bushings swapped in to hopefully tighten up the shifter. Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr

Wonder how this would do in my brat. Any increase in performance over a weber? -

EA71 Transmission rebuild kit
spicypeanut replied to spicypeanut's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Thanks guys, this pretty much convinces me that my original assumption of the blank letting go and falling into the flywheel is correct. I'm planning on taking it to my mechanic in about a week or so. -
How rare are 1st gen and 2nd gen Subaru Brat?
spicypeanut replied to i_subie's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I know this is an old thread, but just to add my .02 The Subaru Brat is most def a rare vehicle, especially one that is in nice condition. Most of them have either been crushed or rusted into the ground. So finding a nice, rust free, clean example of a first generation Brat is tough to come by. -
Uh I am pretty sure there is a piece of metal missing that would normally block off that hole, looking into the transmission it would seem there are some nice little metal shavings.... has anyone ever seen this happen before? Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr It looks like the factory casting of the transmission housing had that spot cast as if the factory intended to punch it out. Well what I think happened is, that little square piece of metal broke loose some-how and fell into the transmission and bounced around on the clutch/flywheel. I won't know for sure until my mechanic looks at it. Here is a similar engine/transmission and the metal plate is clearly visible. e3bf90ea (1) by blue03wrx, on Flickr

Hey all, I'm doing some research to see if there are any rebuild kits out there for the factory EA71 4 speed 4wd transmission. Anyone have any good leeds? I may have to do a rebuild. Not sure exactly.

Yeah I do have it up on auto trader, we are redoing our house and can use the extra money to help redo the kitchen before we move in. I would prefer not to sell it but the money would help get me into the house. I did just find the bed trim piece that holds down the carpet which is pretty rough but I'll be able to restore it. So I'm still continuing with the build regardless. Regarding the ac, I think it might be best if I went with a brand new aftermarket system. Does any one have any suggestions?

1978 Brat parts vehicle
spicypeanut replied to randyintexas's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Dude. I'm so sorry to hear that! -
Just aquired some new parts. Box of AC related goodies. Compressor, dryer, compressor bracket, switch, fan (plus an extra good fan). Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr This is the bit that goes up under the dash. Its a bit tired. Is there a company that I can send this out to for a rebuild? Does anyplace like that even exist?Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr New wheels mocked up. I still haven't decided what wheels I want to get tires for. Untitled by blue03wrx, on FlickrUntitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr I cleaned this up, had some rust on some of the bits. Cleaned up the housing, de-rustified, fresh paint and all around polishing up. Picked up a 78 BRAT this week :)
spicypeanut replied to bleuquila's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I really want to know what this is. I can't imagine it would be a horn. Since it looks like it has a vac line on it. Unless it was some sort of air horn... I'm 99% sure that wasn't factory. Just look how it was stuffed into the engine bay. Where did the vac line from it go to? With it installed there, one of the 2 factory horns are shoved up and out of the way. Which I don't believe was correct. The horn pointing towards the sky should be below the other horn facing forward. -

I'm liking this project. If you have any other questions let me know and I might be able to help. Check this post to see how the jack is supposed to sit. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/142864-1978-subaru-brat-from-death-to-life-and-everything-in-between/?p=1228736 I'm not sure what the blue circular thing is. Is that supposed to be a brake booster of some sort? Also, it looks like the motor current in the engine bay might have had ac at one point. It looks like the bracket it there for the ac compressor. Edit #2, it looks like this has the newer ea81 motor in it (based on the shape of the air cleaner). The original ea71 air cleaner is circular. -
