Weber carb installation problem
spicypeanut replied to mojoinacoma's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I'm not sure exactly what this one is. Mine did not have this. It doesn't look like the line is factory, maybe it was a "cold air intake" hose? You can just "T" the driver and passenger sides together and connect the 1 into the weber plate. What I did originally was I drilled a few more holes in the weber plate and just connected them as if they belonged there. This sort of goes with my last answer. Just add another hole in the weber plate and hook it up. That way it stays as functional as it can. -
Weber carb installation problem

Go get yourself a can of PB Blaster. Spray it on the threads and let it soak over night. Then come back in the morning and give those stubborn bolts a try. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Blaster-11-oz-Penetrating-Catalyst-Lubricant-16PB-THD/202597469 It has never failed me. -
Are brats really this expensive now?
spicypeanut replied to comatosellama's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've been following the market on gen 1 brats closely. Examples that have been mostly restored are going for 10k +. Which surprises me given that the motors are usually going on 100,000 miles or are just a junkyard motor. I would expect a rebuilt engine for 10k+ -
Does this motor have AC on it? If so I need to buy it!

Lots of Subaru Reprodution Decals (my new store)
spicypeanut replied to Pooparu's topic in Products for your Subaru
Glad to see your store is up and running. Mine came out pretty good. A bit more than I would have liked to pay but I think it came out good in the end. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/142864-1978-subaru-brat-from-death-to-life-and-everything-in-between/?p=1269667 -
1979 Brat exhaust issue.
spicypeanut replied to 914Driver's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Hi Dan. My Brat's exhaust was changed some-where down the line before I got it. Last time I was underneath it, I saw two pipes, I believe its a full dual exhaust. The only thing I added was a catalytic converter. So it is most certainly do-able. -
Transmission Predicament 1980 BRAT

Mark, You are absolutely right. I've heard so many horror stories from places like that. Even normal transmission shops you have to be careful. -

EA71 UEL Headers?
spicypeanut replied to spicypeanut's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
better yet. just texted you. -
Anyone have any leads on a UEL header for our EA71 motors? I'd love to just buy one if they already existed. Otherwise I'd have to pay someone to make some fancy custom unit. Any leads?

Did some more work on it this weekend. The car is pretty much rust free. And I would like to keep it that way. I actually had some time to myself on Saturday so I jacked the Brat up, removed the wheels, cleaned the inside wheel wells, and spayed them with an anti-rust coating. Nothing like a few hours sliding around on the garage floor, with little particles all over my hands and arms....I didn't take too many pictures because I had some place to be and was running late. It took me a solid 3 hours or so. But I think you get the idea. I sprayed a WHOLE bunch in the front fenders, as far up and forward as I could go. Just to make sure. I'm always cruising eBay. I think I have a sickness. You should see all the parts I have stashed in my garage. -
Okay, so here is my big surprise update. I recently picked up a factory ea71 air cleaner assembly (two actually) from 2 fellow members. The better one I left un-touched and pristine. The air cleaner that needed some TLC, I took that one over to my machine shop friend. The machine shop guy "Larry" has been working with metal basically his entire life. He is a plethora of information and wisdom. During this project I even got to use some tools that were owned by his father (which were used while building prototype B-29 Bombers back in the day. Anyways, we get to work and the end product is a factory EA71 air cleaner that bolts right up to the aftermarket Weber carburetor. I've never actually seen this done before. Who knows, maybe its the first time someone has wanted the engine bay to look stock while using a Weber? What do you guys think? Before: yXynQaU - Imgur by blue03wrx, on Flickr After: Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr You can see sort of what we did here: Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr Here's what we basically did. 1. Cut large circular hole in original air cleaner bottom 2. Cut equally large sized circle out of Aluminum 3. Cut Aluminum to fit around funky Weber carb opening 4. Drill and bevel holes for all factory lines 5. Rivet new base plate to factory air cleaner bottom

This is what gen 1 brat tail lights look like. 1977-1981. If yours do not look like this then you probably have gen 2 tail lights. Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr

spicypeanut replied to jacksokm's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just to add my .02. I was able to ALMOST get my brat to pass smog with the weber on it. I had all the factory lines routed as if the weber was the factory carb. So the EGR system was working as it was intended to. With that setup, and the timing retarded, it almost passed. Then I added a single catalytic converter to the exhuast and tried again. Passed no problem.- 10 replies

Can you take a couple pictures of what broke? I tried looking up there but couldn't really tell if anything was broken. There is a definate squeek when I press the clutch but everything works just fine. So I'm not really sure if mine is cracked or not.
