1978 Subaru Brat. From death to life and everything in-between
Thanks for the lead. I've been reading all I can about coatings. I'll keep the thread posted on what I end up with and how it turns out. And now the teaser. Untitled by blue03wrx, on Flickr

1978 Subaru Brat. From death to life and everything in-between
I've got a surprise in store for everyone. Stand by over the next week or so. Things to do: 1. Surprise 2. Anti-rust coating (I wanted to coat as much of the under-body as I can to preserve the car). What products out there work the best? 3. Air Conditioning (For the So Cal Summer heat) 4. Remove, and repair Steering wheel cracks 5. Remove, and replace faulty left turn signal stalk (when using the turn signal and making a left turn, the signal will stay on and not "click" off after completing the turn)

1400 Crate motor on CL
I saw this yesterday. I'm pretty close to this place. If it was a 1.6 I would have been all over it. Even the 1.4, I was tempted to just go get it.

EA71 Rebuild questions
1. add a weber carb 2. check the clearances on the motor you tear down, and order accordingly 3. try to get yourself a factory service manual, it details everything you could possibly need.

1978 Subaru Brat. From death to life and everything in-between
Ah, thanks for the photo. I'm sure I've actually seen that before (now that I see it). Good luck finding a pair, let alone a pair in nice shape. I bet I could have my upholstery guy whip up a couple sets. Do you think there would be any interest? Maybe $25-30?

Seat belt covers? Oh why did you have to inform me of such a thing. Now I'm going to spend hours looking into that. To save me some time, could you elaborate, show me original documents or photos that show what you are talking about? (so I can try to get a set lol)

CA Smog on Subaru
Whats the deal with CA smog exemption? I keep trying to go to the DMV sit but it gives me a 404. How can we get an exemption?

CA DMV Historical Plate for 78 Brat
So I've been curious for a while about the Historical license plates and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on getting one for the 78 Brat. Here's some links to the DMV site. License Plate Main: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/dmv/vr/placardsanddecals Link to Historical Plate Paperwork: http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg17a.pdf So would there be any pro/con to having a Historical Plate? I know the Brat in my opinion is a historically significant vehicle. But is it worth getting the special plate?

CA Smog on Subaru
Well, my experience was with a freshly rebuilt ea71 motor with an aftermarket Weber carb, and aftermarket (albeit very old) exhaust with glass-pack mufflers. In that configuration it actually passed the high speed portion of the smog test but failed the low speed portion. We had a cat installed and it passed both the high speed and low speed tests. Although the low speed was close to failing (probably because the smog guy let the carb load up and didn't rev it at all to get it cleared out before he started the test. But it did pass.)

Tailgate Dashboard Light
Probably the switch or wire that goes to the tail gate was pinched or damaged in some way. I would try to trace it and make sure the circuit is in good shape.

Headlight Problem on 1980 Subaru Brat
I'd imagine they are the same. Nothing really changed much in the first gen.

Hi everyone!
Those are some wonderful pictures. I love looking at old photos, mostly to see how things have changed over the years. I know on my Brat, the Weber Carb is supposed to be the go to carb on these early motors. I'm not too familiar with the Subaru 360's but it might be worth looking into if a Weber fits on that motor.

Love those wheels on that car. Specs on the wheels please!?

OEM window molding
I wonder if we can get a group buy going. Maybe have the company whip up 30 sets or so. I know for a fact there are quite a few people on the board that would jump at the chance to buy a whole new set. @djcommie could you call that place and ask?

Where specifically did you put the glue? The boot has a small lip that slips under the hole on the transmission tunnel. Did you put glue on the top of the lip of the rubber boot? Or did you let the boot only sit on top of the transmission tunnel and put glue on the underside of the boot?

Re-adjusted the tow hitch last night. Needed to space it out and angle it down slightly so it wouldn't come into contact with the tail gate (when the gate was dropped). Cleaned up the nuts and bolts, and customized a piece of flat unistrut to space out the distance. Works perfectly. I've got a call into my upholstery guy, who will be fixing the headliner, and shift boot. Things left to do: 1. BRAT side sticker 2. Take it to my interior guy, have him fix the Headliner, and Shift Boot. 3. Either put ERA-specific Air Conditioning or Brand New Aftermarket Air Conditioning. (Maybe Restomodair.com) 4. Repair steering wheel, Wrap steering wheel with Black perforated leather wrap.
