FYI I got her up to freeway speeds today and the scoop helped the engine keep cooler than ever. It used to get too hot at higher speeds because the air would go right on by the holes in the hood and the fans couldn't "grab" enough. Now it really rams it in there. I guessed on the size and shape and it seems to really work well, if anyone is interested in construction details, I could write it up with a printable template. No welding required. Cost less than $25.

Ok so, the speedo (80s F-150) actually plugs right into the cable from the ea81 trans. It's not exactly accurate, but I have long since lost the original soob speedo. After I get this thing on the road in the next few days I'll figure out how off it really is. Rick, the gained entry angle is totally worth the hassle of moving the radiator up on top. You should be able to use a stock radiator, but I had to use a MR2 radiator due to clearence issues from the rollcage. Another nice thing about the top mount radiator is it dosen't get mud lodged in it when hitting the deep stuff.

And center dash gauge panel.

Hello North Idaho. Where is the social group section you speak of. I couldn't find it. Thanks, Ian

Ok, I know there are old soobs somewhere down here. Anyone in So Cal have good trail knowledge? I have a ea81 to break in for a long trip.
-
Nice, sounds good, I learned alot as a millwright. Good to hear you're still rocking the Subaru's. I just can't bring myself to get rid of the hatch. Are there any soob shows up there this year? I need a re-break in trip for this old girl. Ian
-
Hey Rick, The hatch started for the first time in a year and a half. It's back on gasoline and just got a coat of OD. How ya been? What's new? Still in Ptown? Ian
-
OK, never mind. These guys were very helpful and answered the question. http://www.philbingroup.com/catalog.htm In the above pic the right most terminal is for the positive side of the coil (black with white stripe). Ian
-
Here's a pic from GD, but the wires are too dirty to tell. The left disty of course is the Hitachi. Ian
-
Thanks Jerry, I got that much but it's the disty terminals that are unmarked and since I dont have the wiring harness I'm not sure how to connect to the disty side. Ian
-
Hi all, 84 GL Hatch, I just switched from ND disty to Hitachi and want to know which terminals on the Hitachi ignition module go to which sides of the coil. The reman unit I got is unmarked and I have to make the harness. GD? Ian

I used a Toyota MR2 radiator for my hatch (with a 4" lift), the inlet and outlet are in the proper place and I am running dual fans that "breathe" through nice little (big) holes in the hood. This radiator is set up for an inline pressure cap so you can still close the hood with just enough room. The new approach angle is totally worth the work, and a new cross support can be welded in higher with little effort. One thing to consider if you are going to go this far is to run your exhaust up and over the engine crossmember, every little bit counts. Yeah Kennedy makes a fine product, but not cheap. With the set up I have, haven't found the need for a modified oilpan, I'm hardly using the skidplade as it is. Also AMC made a radiator way back when, that was real short but very wide that should fit behind the grill. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10854&cat=500&ppuser=600

What are these "trails" you speak of?

Took the hatch out today for a test run. Absolutely no power loss with the propane, in fact I think it runs better and more consistent than the weber I was running. Not having a windshield sucks, I need to get that put in and buy some chapstick. The top mount radiator works nicely, and the new approach angle is unreal, didn't even use the skidplate once today on things I would have stuffed my old bumper into before. see pics here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10910&limit=recent http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10909&limit=recent I will try to get a better camera next time......Oh yeah Matty it is a propane only system......

The tubing is 1.5" x .095 DOM, and the 22 points are anywhere the cage terminates to the vehicle, which are 3 for the rear hoop, 5 for the front hoop, 6 for the rear downbraces and rear bumper mounts, and the rest are tied in to the rollcage from the front bumper mounts to the strut towers down to some lower bracing and skidplate supports and back though the firewall. Gd the power is good, I'll let you know more after I take it out for the first time and give it a real test! Ha Ha, yup no heater. As far as the 225 goes, I think you can mix and match parts to do whatever works for your application, housings, fittings...that's what I did.
-
More crappy pics......As you can see the bodywork still needs work but the rest is done, took it out for a short drive today.....Hey Chris, thanks for all the tubing, the exhaust works great. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10855&cat=500&ppuser=600 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10854&cat=500&ppuser=600 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10856&cat=500&ppuser=600

So who has a lifted rig in the southern Cali area that knows some good places to get dirty?
-
I've got some higher quality pics coming soon, and the cage, yeah I already had the black paint...

Thanks guys.... The propane system was put together by a tech at Suburban Propane's Conversion Center in Portland, OR. Basically I told him what I wanted and what it was going on and he gave me all the parts. I am using the Impco 200 carb with a bolt pattern that fits the Weber base adapter, the carb is oversized a bit, but the only thing that does is cost more. I wanted one that would work with a turbocharger or without. It runs really smooth and the propane conversion was actually the easiest part of the job. The conversion center I went to had a huge collection of used tanks so I had plenty of options for mounting.
-
Ok so I've been gone for a while, but for good reason. I just finished my "yearlong" project I started after sinking it in a mudhole last winter. Propane conversion, 22 point rollcage bumper to bumper, top mount radiator and raised radiator mount for better approach angle, adjustable strut lifts for max ground clearance off-road and proper camber on the road. Sand rail seats with the slots for my five point harnesses, power steering (VW top end). Propane tank is 33 gallon, mounted where the back seat used to be, custom exhaust that goes over the crossmember, and the obvious, completely gutted interior and unhatched. Crappy pics can be seen here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10820&cat=500&ppuser=600 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10821&cat=500&ppuser=600 Better photos are on their way...

I don't like to run the stock rubber flex disks due to the wearing and cracking. What I have found is that the same part for an old vw bug seen here .......http://www.doghouserepair.com/mall/description.php?ItemID=1252 fits perfectly and is much more durable. I have always run these on my vw's and have never had to replace one. Discount Import parts in Milwaukie or Beaverton will have these in stock. Make sure to get the urethane one.
