  1. See what I mean about the crosstrek? It's so sad Either way, the wrx are nice cars. Just HAVE to keep up with maintenance or it won't late 100k+. Here in Ct, I've always just run good all seasons (and I mean good) and usually do just fine (until the car turns into a pole) in which case, good snow tires would help. I think there's something about studded snow tires on subarus. Do a little bit of research on that because I'm not sure.
  2. A cat is unlikely to set that code. Or at least jist one bank. You likely need an O2. But you should check the wiring for that bank and make sure its not damaged. If not. Put in a new O2
  3. So I've driven a 17' 5mt crosstrek. It wasn't like... Really slow or anything. It's probably sufficient for the car. Even with 5 people and luggage in it. I feel though that if you went to its max weight with or without a trailer. You'd notice a little more of an issue merging with traffic etc. But then again, you have a lot of weight on the car why would you be pushing it? Never driven an outlander so can't help with the comparison. You could definitely fit hockey sticks and groceries in the crosstrek. I feel like the forester would provide more space then the crosstrek. But there are true numbers put there if you wanted to compare facts on which one has more cargo space. Not sure about the global platform. In theory and the way Subaru has been marketing it, it sounds really promising. I think they're too new for anyone to have any concrete answers on it though. About the wrx. My best friend has a 03 WRX (I know, much older. But ground clearance hasn't changed much if at all) He's never had a serious issue in the snow. But he doesn't drive when it get past 4-5". The problem with the wrx and impress (non crosstrek) is that once the snow is higher then the bumper (which happens often in CT) the car turns into a snow plow. And no you have to keep traction while plowing snow. The deeper the snow the easier to lose traction. Imo, unless you want a "race car" or a fast car. Stay away from the wrx's. Higher maintenance cost, less reliability at higher mileage, higher insurance rate. I'm not again the wrx's I like them. They're just not right for a most family men. If I were you id test drive both the forester and crosstrek and see which one you like. Don't worry too much about the power issue. Because any car fully loaded isn't going to be in the left lane doing 85+. Heck, bring some stuff to the dealership and load it in both cars (to test cargo space) see which one fits you, your wife, and your family better.
  4. I have a 09 forester. Very similar design to current MY. And ill tell you it doesn't ever feel like its going to tip, unless I take a 30 mph corner at 70. The crosstrek Imo is underpowered. Even flooded in a 5 speed seems like I'm going to get passed by a pruis (little exaggeration but you get my point) The crosstrek is a lifted impreza. No hate om the crosstrek, I LOVE them. Both are similar enough cars and should handle very similar in the snow. The forester has a 2.5L engine where's the crosstrek has a 2.0 (unless changed in the current MY) They both are just as reliable. These new engine (after the oil consumption issue) has no real issues. Just a thought. In 2018 Subaru is releasing they're brand new Ascent. 7 passenger, 2.4L turbo engine. Very nice car so it looks.
  5. Yeah. Imo (I don't work on non EJ platforms much) but if you're having luck with the axles, JUST not the boots. Oem is the way to go and should help you're issue. Might only last 1k miles on a boot. But that is much better then 50 lol Good luck
  6. I gotcha. Yeah from what I've seen people talk about on here, the oem boots are FAR superior then any of the aftermarket ones. Could try getting new from dealer. They'd probably only be like 5 -10 dollars each for NOS
  7. Or if you're having luck with those aftermarket axles not clicking or vibrating. Get some oem boots. Car-part or maybe from the dealer? I've read a few posts here of people saying a few aftermarket axles are ok but the boots are garbage. So get some oem quality boots and but them on your aftermarket axles. Problem solved.
  8. Common issues I've seen or other people on this site dislike about aftermarket cats. Include but not limited to: Return of the P0420 Rust out after a short period of time Separate internally Don't fit Don't seal (at the gasket surfaces) Etc 1 and 2 are the more common issues. From what I've seen and read about oem cats verse aftermarket ones. If the ecm needs to see the cat being minimum 85% efficient to not set the P0420, the oem one will start out at as close to 100% as physically possible. Because they want the cats to last the life of the vehicle. Aftermarket companies can keep their price lower by having the cats start at say 90% efficient. So it might not set the P0420 when you install the cat. But give it a couple thousand miles (sometimes 10-20k) and it'll come back. There are companies who sell cats that start at sub 85% (all relative numbers) because some manufacturers don't set the P0420 until like 70-80% Most of the Japanese cars Imo set P0420 much easier then the domestic. So either fork out the cost of an oem or find an aftermarket that has a really good reputation.
  9. Dealer? I've gotten EA82T timing covers from my dealer. NOS If not junk yards? Someone on here who has a spare set?
  10. Id adjust the valves if the heads are off anyways. Would make it easier (provided you know how to do it)
  11. Automatic? I'd think you'd have compatibility issues with the svx being 94' non obd 2 and the impreza transmission being obd2... Others will chime in about it I'm sure, but that's the jist I get about mix and matching non obd and obd.
  12. According to alldata on a 2014 forester (no updated info on 15'+ yet) the ecm is behind the glove box. And it says you need to remove the glove box to access it
  13. Um. Ok. We'll the service procedure I pull up from alldata says the centre two get an extra 45 degrees at the very end.... Either way. Doubtful they're going to fail either way.
  14. Just to note your post gloyale. On OEM SOHC head bolts. There are bolts with a black head. Those go in the middle, I think it's because the middle two bolts get an extra 45 degrees in the torqueing. And the middle ones are slightly different to handle the extra torque?
  15. I...honestly don't know of the newer cars...they used to be under the steering column. But then I saw one under the hood on a new wrx...
  16. The launch can't get into the air bag system? Must be a cheaper version. Yeah idk about getting it to flash etc. I really didn't think it was possible. If it does i wanna know how you did it lol.
  17. It says, symptoms of code are: "TROUBLE SYMPTOM: Improper idling Poor driving performance" So id get that fixed, then deal with the smoke. One step at a time, and any code related to the ecm is critical to fix asap
  18. Just looked up diagnostic tree related to that code. It referred me to P0606. Then said to basically inspect main harness to ecm, power wire to ecm. Ground wire.
  19. Or fuse is blown. But I'm pretty sure you need a scanner to read codes from air bag. I didn't even think air bag would flash like the check engine light.
  20. Did you remember to plug the module back in? I'm pretty sure its under the radio unit (below the center console piece) Might explain why its on and won't flash. Also, on an 02. I'm pretty sure you can get air bag codes through the obd2 connector. With appropriate scan tools. If you don't have access to the scan tools, I understand your method of choice.
  21. You might be able to get a few hundred more if you sat on it. But 500$ would be the best best to sell asap
  22. All the plastic splash shield underneath is really for is aerodynamics. To help prevent wind from getting stuck under the engine when driving. Helps with fuel economy a little. That's why most if not all newer cars have then. Don't think that dinky plastic is going to protect you from anything. Lol.
  23. Well, considering you had no issues installing the new one. I wouldn't worry about what the manual says. I've had a few times were the service procedure was overcomplicated for the task at hand.
  24. I've had two subarus that with a bad heater core caused an over heating issue. Glad you got to the bottom of it
