No idea what it is(85 Brat). But, it made it this morning, and yesterday, when it was very cold out, and the car was still very cold. Sounds like it's coming from under the hood on the driver's side, and kind of makes a whirring sound. Didn't seem to be related to vehicle or engine speed though. Made the sound for a few seconds, then stopped. Then did it again later, and so on. Seemed to completely stop after the car was good and warmed up. Any thoughts?

I found a good constant power... then I verified it was the clock circuit when I accidentally grounded it. It was a green connecter, driver's side under the dash, not connected to anything. Had a black and yellow wire in it, with the black(white stripe I think) being the constant. Someone had previously tapped it, though there was no wire on it when I got the car. So all is good now, but I'm still curious as to what the other wires in the brown connector for the stereo are.
-
The clock is what I was planning to tap. Do you know off hand which wire that is, and the best place to get to it? And I guess no one knows what this yellow wire is for then?
-
Are we talking about the same vehicle? Every thread I've read on here says there is no constant power on an EA81, at the stereo. And the yellow didn't have power on it either. The red is the ACC, not the red/green. The Red/green is the one in question.

I know where to pull a wire from, my goal here is to make it as stock looking as possible for the wiring. So I don't have extra wires all over.
-
I have a multimeter, but I was doing this in the dark, in 10F weather. So I will wait to probe it with the multimeter until warmer, daylights hours. And the memory wire is basically why I am asking. If one of these wires are unused for this application, I can rewire it, and maintain a disconnectable harness for easy removal.

Anyone have the list of what all the wires on the brown plug(85 Brat) do? So far, I've got a confirmed ACC, ground, and lights/dimmer. But there's a yellow wire that I couldn't determine, and a red/green(I think) that was very low voltage(test light barely came on). Any idea what these do?

I guess it really depends on if you have any hills in your area, and if you feel like being lazy on the clutch/gas when starting.

EA82 xmember->EA81 car?
Speedwagon replied to Speedwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So no one has any real advice on how to go about how to do this? Seems like in my searching, half the links in the old threads are dead, so they aren't of much help, if there was help there before. No pictures, write up, nothing? -
Can the EA82 trans crossmember be modified to fit the EA81 vehicle? Or is this something that would require more work that it's worth? Or, can the mounting tabs of an EA81 xmember be cut off and welded onto the EA82 xmember, with good success? Yes, yes, I know... Jerry's kit. But what if I don't want to get his kit? What if I want to do the work myself? I can't find any threads that actually detail what gets done in this area, they always just reference Jerry's kit.

When I bought a '91 Legacy about 18 months ago(for my sister, and it left Colorado for Chicago), it came with a set of tire cable chains. Stock tire size on that car is 185/70/14. I kept the chains, as they are illegal in Illinois. Will they safely fit on the Brat's tires of 185/70/13? I know nothing of chains, since I'm from the midwest where they are outlawed. I do know that throwing a chain would be a bad thing though.

I don't see it as any different than the Jeep guys swapping in Ford axles under their rigs. You take the vehicle you like, and make it more suited to your needs, with the appropriate parts. If that happens to be a SA from a Ford or Toyota, so be it. I think it says something about Subaru's interior though, if someone is willing to put the rest of that under a Subaru, instead of a Heep.

I went back today to get the flywheel for this 5 speed conversion, and I took another look at the '82 Brat they had there. Didn't pay attention before, but on top of it were 2 sliding rear windows, plus the one still in the back. One of the windows that was just sitting there, was the 2 piece slider(instead of the center 3/4 window sliders). The window was complete, so I grabbed it to replace the crappy, no latch, 4 piece in my '87 brat! And I didn't even have to do anything to get it, either!

Clutch doesn't quite work(5 speed swap)
Speedwagon replied to Speedwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok, now I get it. The car I snagged the trans and clutch from was an '88. Probably be easier long term, if I just go get the flywheel. -
Clutch doesn't quite work(5 speed swap)
Speedwagon replied to Speedwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well I tried to do that, but the EA82 disc wouldn't fit into the EA81 plate. So then I tried the EA82 disc and plate, but when I start to bolt it up, there is no pressure to hold the disc in place. -
Denver junkyards with 80s Subarus?
Speedwagon replied to Speedwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The blue one is a wagon. I don't think any of them were spectacular inside or out though. A few were not bad as I recall, but I didn't take great notice of them. -
My gas tank... it is a bomb
Speedwagon replied to Speedwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Got this problem fixed! Someone removed the charcoal canister from the vehicle and plugged the vent line with a bolt. I snagged a new canister and piping from the junkyard yesterday. Much better now! -
Softopper, for a Brat?
Speedwagon replied to Speedwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, it was very much shot down anyways... -
http://www.softopper.com is located in Boulder, CO. They don't currently make anything, but I was wondering if there might be interest in such a product? If anyone here was interested, it might make it easier for me to pitch it to them to produce a topper. I think I'd like to have one, as they are small and lightweight, yet can still cover the bed easily.

Brat rear suspension question
Speedwagon replied to Speedwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So the only way to get good travel, would be aftermarket big money coilovers? Like the kind they put on buggies? I'll check out the Ranchos for now though. -
After looking at an EA82 at the junkyard today, it got me thinking of the Brat's rear suspension. From what I've gathered from searching threads, the EA82 is wider and would require a fair amount of work to fit it into the rear of the Brat. What I'm wondering, is if there would be an advantage to doing custom coilovers in the rear of the Brat, and remove the torsion bars. Would anything be gained by doing such a thing, for offroading? More flex or anything? Obviously, it would need to be properly sized for the application. Thoughts?

Denver junkyards with 80s Subarus?
Speedwagon replied to Speedwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I found 3 cars with D/R 5 speeds today. Quite a few EA82s, and a couple EA81s there. Here's some pictures I got from the two yards Denver U-Pull-and-pay: Are the brat seats complete in the picture? Or do they look like they are missing parts? Basically, are they worth grabbing or not? Colorado auto and parts: I'll be going back tomorrow, to pull a 5 speed. If any of the locals are interested in coming along to help, I'll gladly pay your $2 entrance fee.
