250 miles actually. More like a 4.5 hour drive with the twisty NZ roads. I havnt seen or head of a ej18t. -

I had a similar problem. The shaft on the end of the starter on which the gear slides on had become so dry and crappy that the solenoid no longer had the strength to move it. I took it apart and oiled it up, now it works fine. (Apart from a few other problems....) -
If you have high oil pressure and worn bearings because of blocked oil passages, you will most likely notice considerable bearing noise. If you have good oil pressure, and a quiet, smooth engine, thats a fairly good indication of a good bottom end.

Sweet, i didn't know toyota made a water/air intercooler. What engine is that off? It looks more compact than the subaru water/air intercooler, yes? -

EA82 worn control arm bushings?

These are the two circular bushings on the rod going from the lower control arm to the rear of the wheel well, yes? I think you should price new ones, they should be quite cheap. If they are too dear, second hand ones will probably be ok, as long the donor car hasn't done too many kms. When you have it off, check the thread on the rod, they can get damaged. If they are damaged the nut can feel as if its tight when its not. If you decide to buy new ones, rest assured that you will notice a huge difference in how the car drives with them. Loose leading rod bushings make for a horrible drive. -

Thats why i ended up using a sealant. Problem is i have never heard of either product, any idea what kind of sealant it is? I already have the oem HGs for my ea81t, just need to decide whether or not to use a sealant.

I've had, and heard of, much worse advice coming from mechanics! I know what you mean though. I think in this case the guy did believe what he was saying, maybe he was misinformed by someone else.

hey, you can get 13 inch and up spinners over here, if you guys can only get them in 18 inch count yourselves lucky. I have seen far too many early 80s toyota starlets and datsuns with ridiculous spinners on their factory wheels. Disgraceful. I was thinking about putting a set on my boat trailer though.....

Hey! i don't live in a third world country! However, we do seem to get third world cars, so ill let you away with it. Regarding the distributer, i'm not sure, my friend who owns it lives over 400km away (thats considered a long way when you live in New Zealand!), so i can't really go over and check. Cheers. -
Its definitely coming from the HG, i can see it seeping out. Wasn't a silver gasket, it was almost black. Thats interesting that you guys don't use sealant, friends at the parts store strongly recommended it. Guess I should have asked here first! Might just keep driving this motor and see how it goes, it doesn't seem to be leaking coolant internally yet. Ill just have get the ea81t ready to go back in asap. I've got oem HGs for the ea81t, so ill put them on dry. Thanks.

Got my carb'd motor running in the turbo wagon, used a blue non setting sealant on the head gasket. Just noticed its leaking coolant out the top of the head. No water in oil as yet. This is with a aftermarket head gasket (i know, i know oem is best but i figured a cheap one would do as this engine is only a temporary thing!). I think the sealant i used is crap, cos i cleaned up the surfaces nicely and torqued and retorqued the head properly. What kind of sealant do others use?

Yeah, if the wheels were chromed when they shouldn't have been, it could affect the strength. Fatigue will result in a fracture, not softening of the material. I had the same thing happen on my Holden, had to swap with the spare wheel. Don't know what the cause was. Loose wheel nuts will allow the rim to bend much more easily. -
I think there is an advantage to having a bearing with a seal on the outer side. I find that the hub seals leak when driving through deep water. If you have some grease between the hub seal and your bearing seal any water will get trapped there and wont get into your bearings. However, if you don't drive through rivers etc there is no advantage to sealed bearings. By the way, the reason i say you should remove the inner bearing seals is to allow extra grease from betwen the bearings to circulate. This will extend the relubrication interval.

Fronts are 6207 deep groove balls (SKF). If you get sealed ones, take the inner seal of each off and throw it away. You will then need to wash all of the grease out of them before you can put different stuff in.

Seems that the carb fuel pump draws through the injection one fine - i just had to "wake up" my carb pump from its long sleep with a hammer.

Finally got the carb'd motor running in the turbo wagon, i go to take it for a drive and the brake pedal goes staight to the floor. .. It seems to be coming from where the reservoir attaches to the master cylinder. Odd, cos the whole lot looks fairly new. Do these things have a habit of leaking, and if so, can they be fixed or just replaced? (I think this may be happening because the reservoir got knocked sometime when the turbo motor was coming out.) Cheers.

Are the fuel pumps off fuel injected models centrifugal types, or something else? Reason i'm asking is that i am putting a carb'd motor in place of the ea81t (very temporarily) and am wondering if i can draw fuel through the FI fuel pump (which is disabled) with the carb fuel pump. Thanks.
