  1. Get an ea81 style vehicle - theres a handy spot around the 4wd select lever where a cup fits nicely, especially paper takeaway cups!
  2. Could be a weak ignition coil, when they start to go they will often produce symptoms like that.
  3. Considering it probably wont be in the water that often, or for very long, i doubt it will have any more environmental effect than a fizz boat with a dirty old 2 stroke merc on the back...
  4. Thats the wierd thing - the dizzy seems fine. The gear on the end of the dizzy shaft even looks fine!
  5. I found where those chunks of aluminium floating around in my engine came from! Check out this disty drive gear.... Can't imagine what would have caused it, any ideas? Also, as you can see, the crankshaft bearings had seen better days.... (or not, im sure that picture wasn't that dark and crappy before..)
  6. Could you clarify what means of propulsion you plan on using? It sounds as if you plan on using the tyres to provide in water propulsion? This will work to some extent IF the entire tyre is not submerged, but will be fairly unsatisfactory unless your tyres have huge lugs or paddles. I think a propellor would be a much better option. The most obvious way of doing this would be to use the rear drive shaft to run a propellor, which could be lowered into the water. You probably wouldn't want to do that, because you wouldn't have 4 wheel drive anymore. Another option would be to use one or more electric motors to drive propellor(s). These could be powerd by a large alternator on your engine, might be expensive. Or, you could put an outboard on the back! Attach it to the rear bumper mounts, power trim etc and all the controls in the car!
  7. While you could definitely do better than a 80s subaru for safety, you could most definitely do worse... The ea82 subaru is a very safe car compared to many others of its age. Personaly, i don't think they are anything like unsafe enough to make me think twice about driving one.
  8. Don't know, and don't know..... I'll be going to the wreckers in a few days to get an egr control solenoid (damn things), so ill have a look at a few cars there for you. Does yours have a tilting steering wheel?
  9. Here they are. Its only the drivers seat that has this, and its not particularly well designed in my opinion. because it doesn't have the telescopic arm, its rather difficult to raise the seat when you are sitting in it. Does the trick though.
  10. How about this diesel engine? You may need a slight suspension upgrade with it.... http://www.bath.ac.uk/%7Eccsshb/12cyl/
  11. Ingintion pulse code means the computer isn't getting a reference pulse frrom your ignition module, inside the distributor (like points in older cars). This means that either your engine was off when you took the code, or there is a fault in the module or its circuit. Rear wheel bearings consist of two tapered roller bearings and a spacer.
  12. The tapping will mean your valves are not opening as far or for as long. If its a big tap, then i would be surprised if you didn't notice some power loss. Dunno about the knock sensor, I think the tap wouldn't be "heavy" enough to effect it, but who knows?
  13. My 83 turbo wagon has adjustable height seats, So does the 87 GT leone im borrowing at the moment.
  14. A floating subie is an extremely good idea. Im very suprised no one on this site already has one! It would certainly further increase the versitility of the vehicle! An amphibious vehicle has recently went into production, cant remember what its called though. it uses no protruding outriggers, and looks very much like a normal car apart from a bow shape at the front. when it enters the water, teh wheels fold up into the guards so they are out of the water! A justy is very small though, maybe you would be better with a wagon that probably has a greater displacement to wieght ratio?
  15. I know you can re-sleeve diesels, but i don't think its an option for an ea81. For one thing, theres not that much room around the existing sleeves as it is.
  16. I have had sucsess with bearing grease on teh tracks, but any grease would probably do. i also found putting a light coating of graphite lubricant on the window seals helps immensly.
  17. Maybe you could get to 2.0l with a custon crankshaft giving longer stroke, but theres not nearly enough thickness in the cylinder walls to bore out that far. I think the boring limit is 0.5mm over.
  18. Where are the cracks in the heads? If its a crack just between the two valves, they are ok. The ea81 is a strong engine. So long as you change the oil regularly and dont overheat them, they are tough as. I remember seeing an ea81t in akaroa a few years back, yours? If you can, it would be worth fixing the motor, they are very rare here.
  19. 1.5 seconds is a long time. My ea81t and friends ea82t start in much less than a second even when totally cold.
  20. I know i've done it before without using the subaru tool, but i cant for the life of me remember how.... Anyone know?
  21. yeah, just wondering how much difference there is in general engine sound between the motors with hydraulic lifters and those with solids. Reason im asking is that someone has put solids in my ea81t (still has pushrods & valve springs for hydraulics), and im wondering if its worth finding some hydraulic ones to put in.
  22. Are you saying you want to find an ea81t to put in a non turbo car? Good luck - there are very few ea81ts around here (im assuming your from the same christchurch as me) - i have one but its the only one i've seen in well over a year. If you can find one, they seem to be a good strong engine, and would be capable of a fairly decent power output. The ea82t conversion would require much more work, but is possible.
  23. na, i spilt that on there:drunk:
  24. Suprised to find no between valve cracks on the ea81t heads! Someone had put solid lifters in it though, i might see fi i can find some hla's. On a worse note, the coolant supply to the turbo was blocked! When i took the connection off the head, it looked like a blind hole. Dug out a lot of dry crap with a screw driver. This would explain why the previous owner replaced the turbo with a NEW one just before i bought it! Hope its still ok....
  25. Brumbys did come with power steering. RWD will make steering lighter when driving, but wont make much if any difference when you are stationary or going very slow.
