  1. I know its a hard question to answer, but im just after some comparisons with non turb ea81s and even ea82s. Im asking this because i have never seen or heard another ea81t, so i have no idea what mine should sound like! Cheers.
  2. Ehh? One of my sets of ea81 mags are on my friends ea82t wagon - no rubbing, they just stick out the side a little further.
  3. The rear should have some play, but probably not as much as it sounds like you have. You shouldn't be able to feen the play with the wheel off. There is an inside ring nut on the inner side of the bearing housing that you can adjust the bearing pre load with. If the bearing is not noisy, this is probably all that needs done.
  4. Are you talking about front bearings? If so, you pay a lot of money for your bearings over there! is that from a bearing supplier or a car parts place? The bearing supplier would be cheaper than that i would think. I get good SKF bearings for around NZ$10-15 each (less than US$10 each).
  5. yep, ea81t, What silencer are you talking about? It doesn't look like it has been molten, it still has its shape to it. Ill try and take a better photo... That would explain the 'farting' hiss it makes when the rocker cover is off and i turn the engine over..... It looks like i might get my other ea81 some headgaskets and put that in for a while while i take the ea81t apart and give it a 'going over'.
  6. Its not the wear indicator on your brake pads is it?
  7. Yeah, i do. I would expect that after leaving the lifters open 4 turns for the 15 mins, that it would erquire less than 4 truns of the screw till they are loose again (cos the hla would have compressed some), but it wasnt the case.
  8. No, no sticker either. it could have fallen off though.
  9. Check out what i found inside the rocker cover today! Anyone recognise it? Its made out of a hard rubber like stuff.
  10. no, they didn't. The pushrods are definitely different to those on my '81 ea81, which should have solid lifters.
  11. Thank you! The turbo should have hyraulic lifters, but it doesn't seem to so im adjusting it as per the non turbo specs for now. Cheers.
  12. Yeah, am thinking about that, but i don't want to sacrifice gravel/snow performance too much.
  13. Could someone Please give me the proper gap setting for the tappets on a solid lifter ea81??? My manual has gone awol.
  14. ehhhcchh.... as you might see from those pics, the inside of the engine is FILTHY!! And , one of the rockers does not turn freely on the rocker shaft at all. It requires a firm push to get it to move. I think i may have to pull this engine soon..... The guy i bought it of had had the rings done and turbo replaced recently. I think a very poor job must have been done, i have also noticed the pcv hoses are almosted clogged up with a hard dirty sandy crap.
  15. I am just now adjusting the tappets on the ea81t (i had earlier adjusted them before i was told that they are hydraulic). It looks like it has solid lifters, but i was told that all turbo ea81s had hydraulic lifters! if i screw in the adjusters by the 4 turns recommended, wait 15mins, then unscrew them, they unscrew the full 4 turns agaiin before the valve closes completely! There are also no locking tabs. SO, did ea81ts come with solid lifters in 1983, or are they just stuck hydraulic ones without lock tabs?? Cheers.
  16. The float level was about in the middle of the sight glass in my carbd ea81. Im sure there is a diagram that might help you in my manual, but i cant find it! When i do, ill post a pic of the page if you want.
  17. Hello all. The turbo wagon needs a new tyre for its warrant of fitness, and it currently is on 185/60/14s. Im thinking of maybe changing them all to a 70 profile, can anyone tell me how much smoother it will be off road with these? The 60 profile ones seem to jar the car around on the gravel more than i like. Any comments? Cheers.
  18. He also made some car panels (fenders etc. i think) out of a hemp based composite around the same time. buisy man!
  19. Yes, you do. The hub nut can be checked with the car on the ground, just remove the wheel centre cap and there it is.
  20. Thanks guys, i think ill have a go at the screwdriver and hammer thing this weekend, hopefully the weather wil be cold enough! Looks like most of the inside of the floor has already been replaced, its just little bits i need to do. Then ill have to fabricate some form of a rotisserie so i can do the underside.......
  21. A loose hub (castle nut) nut could cause intermitant probs like that. It could also be an inner cv joint. They do funny things like that when the are stuffed.
  22. There is something you add to it to prevent this..... I cant remember what it is, but it was something common household ish, and you dont need to add much. Ill have a look and see if i can find what it is.
  23. No, the muffler could fall off and your car will still run fine (if a little loud!). I don't know much about those late ea82s, is it fuel injected? Someone more familiar with these later engines may be able to help further........
  24. Im sure its the best way to do it, but have you looked at the price of liquid nitrogen lately? I think ill wait till winter!
