  1. Replacement part was brand new. Standard brand, bought through RockAuto. I'm out with the car now. All fuses are good under the hood. The relays in the underhood fuse block click when I turn the lights on. High beams work fine, still no low beams or fogs.
  2. Thanks, Fairtax. The car is all stock, no aftermarket fogs or DRLs. I replaced the turn signal switch about (2) years ago when her turn signals quit working. I'll check fuses first and go from there.
  3. I got a phone call last night from my daughter who's away. She said the low beam headlights on her 99 Forester both went out at the same time. The high beams work fine. I asked her to try the fog lights with the stalk in low beam and she said they aren't working either. Just so I'm prepared when she comes home this evening, is there a fuse for the low beams in the Forester that controls that entire circuit, as well as the relay for the fog lights? Or am I looking for something else?
  4. I think that's exactly what he was doing. He's used to pushing the gas to go-go-go, and was on and off the throttle. He's coming from a 99 Dodge Durango with a completely different drive system and he has to get used to the Subaru system. He's in his late 60s and trying to deal with new technology.
  5. We figured it out, the AWD system is working properly. Not sure what dad was doing, but the car is functioning properly. He's happy and keeping the Outback now.
  6. Yes, I have dedicated snows on my Impreza. I know his all-season tires are at a disadvantage.
  7. When the front wheels are spinning, the car isn't moving forward at all. It doesn't seem like the rears are doing anything, almost like it's only a front wheel drive car. Maybe it is the traction control and I'm used to how my older Impreza gives power to all (4) wheels all the time in snow. He's disappointed because my Impreza goes right up the hill, while he's sitting there spinning the front tires.
  8. He's running the stock Bridgestone Dueler H/Ts that came on the car. It only has about 300 miles on it. I suggested to him it may be the tires, but confused why only the front tires are spinning until you really get on the gas. He's losing faith in the car already. He's hinted at taking it back to the dealer and turning it back in. I told him let me work on some info; there might be something we are missing or there could be a fault with the system. He's agreed to keep it for now.
  9. My dad just bought a new Outback after my raves about my Impreza and seeing how it handles the snow. We just had a fresh 4-5" of snow today and dad was anxious to try out his Outback in it. Something doesn't seem right with his AWD. From a stop on a hill, when he gives the car gas, the front tires spin and the rears appear to be gripping, the engine will bog, but the car won't move. If he engages X-Mode, same thing without the bogging. If he turns traction control off, the car jerks back and forth, with power visually shifting to all wheels, but no real forward movement. If he really gets on the gas, all (4) wheels start to spin, and the car will move up the hill. I've read through the owner's manual and can't seem to find anything suggesting why the AWD system doesn't seem to be functioning properly. If I do the same hill in my '95 Impreza, all (4) of my tires spin and dig in...up the hill I go. Is there something about the new Subarus that would cause this odd behavior?
  10. That helps with the linkage locations, thank you! My other issue is it appears the (2) bolts that hold the handle in place are completely blocked by the window mechanisms and tracks. If I lower the window, the glass is in the way. With the window up, the linkage and track block the bolts. Do I have to gut the door just to do this handle? I read somewhere it can be done start to finish in 5-10 minutes, however I'm finding that hard to believe with what I'm looking at.
  11. We have a 99 Forester and the driver's side front door handle broke, will not release the latch. I can see where the plastic piece just inside the housing broke off. I have a new handle to install, but simply cannot figure out how to get the old handle off. I have the door panel off and can't figure it out. Is there a tutorial somewhere I can reference? This is my better half's car, so need to get it fixed soon. Thanks for the help!
  12. The center of the plug was a light tan. Around the area of the threads, it had a crusty carbon material. I showed it to a coworker well versed in cars, and he said it's not bad looking, but definitely not as clean as the other (3) I took out. He's thinking a compression test is in order.
  13. Ok, swapped on a known good coil pack, new NGK BKR5E-11 plugs gapped to .44 and new Subaru plug wires. The engine is still missing, although the CEL light hasn't come back on yet. Cylinder 3 misfire not showing up anymore, only cylinder 4. I'm pulling my hair out. What else am I missing?
  14. Update: I went to Harry's U-Pull-It in Pennsburg and found a 99 Forester with a great looking coil pack. I put the "new" pack on our Forester and it seemed to be running better, idles smoother. That was about (2) weeks ago. Last night, she tells me the CEL is back on. When I scan the codes, not only am I getting the P0304 code, but now P0303 has shown up. If memory serves me, cylinder 3 is passenger side rear, correct? Opposite side of cylinder 4? I have a set of new NGK plugs and Subaru plug wires ready to go. I still have the old coil pack. I'm going to put the old pack back on and replace the plugs and wires. Am I approaching this in the proper way? I've never seen both cylinders 3 & 4 misfiring at the same time. At idle, I can definitely hear that the idle is rough, however from about 1000rpm up, the engine smooths out. Advice? Thanks. We are trying to make the car last another year before she gets a new Impreza.

  16. moosens, there were a few late 90s, early 2000 Legacy Outbacks there, as well as a few older Legacy wagons. If I recall, majority of them were a dark green or the light green with gold trim. All the Subies I saw were automatics, no manuals. Sure in a few months when you're ready to go there things will change.
  17. I went to Harry's Pennsburg this morning and braved the 18 degree temps...hit the jackpot!! There were probably more Impreza wagons there than Foresters AND Legacys combined. I came across a '95 Impreza 2-dr that had the factory fog lights. I grabbed the switch and wiring off that car. Next, found (2) Impreza Outbacks a few rows apart. One white and one black. The white one's hood was immaculate, but missing the scoop and vents. The black one's hood was smashed, but scoop and vents were intact. So, I grabbed the black scoop & vents and the white hood. I later found out that both Outback Imprezas were put out in the yard yesterday and both had already been picked at pretty well. Amazing how quickly the parts disappear off these Subies. Walked through the rest of the lot and picked-up a few more parts and miscellaneous things I found on other Imprezas, as well as a coil pack for our '99 Forester, which I believe is the cause of our intermittent misfire on cylinder 4 on that car. I bumped into a guy who has a 2.5RS and was parts searching for another Impreza he's fixing up. He and I got chatting and I ended up helping him remove some parts from the black Outback he didn't have the right tools for. All in all, an awesome morning!!!
  18. The 2015 is a brand new, redesigned car and those that are on the road haven't been out there long enough to really be able to give a fair report of issues with them. Probably why you haven't received any input thus far.
  19. All great suggestions! Thanks for the input. Probably taking her car to work with me Tuesday and dig into it after hours.
  20. Is there any particular brand of coil pack I should go with should this pack be bad? Are the 2.5 engines picky about them?
  21. Our '99 Forester will throw code P0304 every now and then, Misfire Cylinder 4. We had the head gaskets, timing belt, water pump, etc. done over the summer. Subaru head gaskets, Gates timing belt kit through Amazon. Prior to the job, car was running horribly, as would be expected with coolant flowing into cylinder 4. At the time, we were getting the P0304 code. Since the job was completed, car runs well again, however, over the last 2 months, the CEL has started coming on about every 1-2 weeks with the wonderful P0304 code. The car still runs well, although I did notice the other night, at idle, the engine was shaking a bit, but once RPMs rise, the roughness goes away and the engine feels strong through the power band. Is it possible the code is somehow locked in the computer and won't completely clear without some fancy-dancy code reader? I'm running NGK V-Power plugs and Standard brand wires. I have a set of Subaru wires on standby if I need to change over. Any thoughts on the recurring code? Thanks!!
