After driving to college this morning in my 97 legacy ej25d, my heater didn't heat up. I drove for at least a half hour with the heater and defroster on, working perfectly fine and hot. After about a half hour, I turned the heater off. Another 5 minutes later I pulled in the college parking lot, and as I sat I got cold so turned the heater on full. The air was lukewarm at first, then cooled down to room temp. I held the revs at 2k and it heated up perfectly fine, like nothing was wrong. My thermostat has been fairly sketchy, since I bought it last November the temp gauge hasn't gone more than 1/3 of the way up. The engine is at 83k and pre-head gasket failure. My Chrysler tech instructor said there's air in the cooling system and the head gaskets are failing. What do you think?

Finally got it on a stand. Like I said before, I bought this engine and didn't really have an idea of what shape it was in, told it had 140K and came from a deer victim car. it came with an oil filter on it, so i drained that into a clear container and ran a magnet underneath, then through it. No metal shavings or slivers. Oil smelled healthy, looked to have about half of its life left. I then pulled off a valve cover. No sludge. appears to have roller followers from what I could see, so the cam was like new, no scoring. Anything else I should look for? Im going to be tearing it down eventually, so ill be looking at pistons, rods, crank, etc.

Yep, mine turned out to be a crank seal. Tricky, since the oil pump is right behind it so it gets worse when RPMs go up. I don't have the tools or confidence to touch anything timing related, so I brought it to the dealer. With my employee discount it was $223 and change, so that would probably be ~$450. 5 hours of labor for a $6 part... I had them reuse the timing belt as there was no oil contamination. It sounds sick, but since I'm building a 2.2 I just need this engine to last until she chews up her head gaskets. Another 20k I'm figuring, it's at 83k now

Nothing real specific, the vin covers everything I really need to know. I was just curious if Subaru did RPO labels, I thought it would be interesting to see everything my car came with. Otherwise, the vin only covers so much. Had to run the vin through the dealer network just to get the build date, cause apparently that was too much trouble for Subaru to put on cars in 1997. Thanks for the info

anyone know where to look for some decent cams? Im having the heads decked, polished, and ported. a slightly hotter cam could add to the airflow a little. the only research I've done only reveals that in 2004 or so it was much easier to find parts for the NA EJ series engines. Im having trouble finding cams for the EJ22E. Also, whats a good way to lift this engine with a hoist?

A bump after four years... Im building a phase I EJ22, and considering a number of things along these lines. Id hate to waste the opportunity to build a bad@$$ motor Stroker kit sounds expensive but awesome, head swaps/frankenmotors sound cheap and easy. The motor will probably eventually go in my 97 OBW, currently rockin' the EJ25D (pre-head gasket failure). Wondering if any original people from this thread long ago are still around, and if anyones had reliability/build issues with these

How it sits now. Oil pan from rock auto, new OEM oil pan bolts. Waiting to borrow my buddy's hoist to get it on my engine stand

I recently purchased an EJ22 from a trusted friend of mine. Got it for $200. Includes sensors and wiring attached to the engine (no harness), and AC compressor, flexplate, valve covers, etc. EDIT: does have the harness 'NOTHER EDIT: SHE'S STAYIN' STOCK. My EJ25's starting to overheat so I just need this one together sooner than later... :/ tl;dr version: -need advice on how to rebuild/where to start -what will give me more power without compromising reliability -any general tips Full, rambling and slightly boring version: The story I got is that it was pulled from a car that hit a deer and tweaked the frame, was wrote off as totaled. The last owner intended to build it, however never had the time and hasnt done anything to it. It supposably has 140k on it. Did not come with an oil pan, stored in a cool, dry, fairly clean area as far as I know. I got a "money back guarentee," so if I take the motor apart and find its blown up, the person I bought it from will buy it back. Discovered it is most likely a 97 (see thread "What year is my engine?") however by the way it sits I cannot access where the VIN is supposed to be, so the manufacture date on the oil filler cap is what I am going by for now. Im making this thread to document the build process I will most likely go through. This is a long term project. Im working on a college budget but still am (mostly) financially able to work on it. I am 17 and this is my first major build done alone. Ive been inside small block mopars and AMC I6 motors, however those have all been someone elses under their supervision and I did not do anything besides taking parts out and putting them back/installing new parts. Im also here to ask if anything could be done to improve power output without ruining reliability. I would like to keep this engine tame for daily deiver use eventually, Im waiting for my EJ25D to chew up its head gaskets (its at 81k) and might temproarily swap depending on if/when it happens. Ive done a small amount of research on porting, decking and polishing heads, delta cams, stroker kits, frankenmotors, turbo builds and the sort. Im wondering if anyone has experience building an EJ22. I know a lot can be done with these and they are strong engines for the most part (forged crank, strong bottom end, etc). Im open to NA or turbo, maybe a WRX turbo swap (last owner's intention). My main worry is that upgrades will cause fitment issues, electronic issues, ECM issues, timing issues, and, well pretty much anything that could cause a problem. Essentialy, what should I be aware of and what should I stay away from? The build hasnt started yet, so Im open to any suggestions (within reason, of course) If the motor goes in anyting soon, it would be my 97 OBW EJ25D 4EAT. As stated before, this will be a long term build. Im going to college for Chrysler training and Im an intern in the shop of a Dodge dealer. I have tools (with the exception of specialty tools, air tools, and welding equipment). I just lack in experience.

How strange, I was literally just thinking about this... Bought me an EJ22 yesterday, Ill see how far I can get in my parents garage on a college budget. Definately following this, Im very interested in the EJ25 block EJ22 heads frankenmotor. Ive also done some research, apparently a "reversed frankenmotor" (EJ22 block w/EJ25 heads) is great for turboing the snot out of due to 8.6:1cr. Ive heard of frankenmotors running around 11:1cr, higher and lower depending on heads, block, gaskets, decked heads, etc. main worry for me (being a daily driver)... Will it need to run premium?

So... '97? Should also mention that due to my lack of engine hoist its stuck in my Outback for a few days until I can borrow my buddy's. Surprisingly I got about 20 mpg hauling it around today. Feels like Im doing a wheelie everywhere... Well as you can see by the pic, its right on top of where the vin should be. Also, are oil pans the same on all years of EJ22? Want to get it covered up sooner than later. EDIT- Sorry non-mobile viewers, the pics are sideways when I upload them here. I cant figure out computers for the life of me, so... Sorry 'bout that....

Just a quick question for anyone who had had the joy of living in NY state... Im looking for new catalytic converters. Mine are rotting away at the flanges, only way theyre staying in is rust and magic. Nothing of any use at the junkyard, so my next choice- RockAuto. However it says that most cats arent legal for sale in CA or for NY vehicles with CA emissions. The Cal-cats are between $250-300 and I need two. The DMV site says that Cali emissions standards arent appliccable if the vehicle has over 7500 miles, but then states all1996 and newer vehicles must meet the standards. Anyone had this issue before? Can I go for the cheaper cats or do I have to get the expensive Cal-Cats? http://dmv.ny.gov/registration/california-emissions-standards The emissions lable on the hood says my car meets california standards, but my manual says that Subaru AWD vehicles are (in big, bold letters) EXEMPT from EPA emissions tests. Wat?

My OBW has them, had no idea how rare they were when I bought the car. I've had several tempting offers. To be honest, you're not missing much. Due to the pillarless doors, they can't cover any part of the window so the most guard you get is the small overhang. Can only keep the windows down maybe half an inch in the rain. If you're used to rain deflectors on other cars with actual doorframes, you'll probably be disappointed. I'd have to agree with the snide jerk- check junkyards (they're not that bad) or get on eBay daily. They're out there, and the only people selling them know how hard they are to find and will ask a pretty penny for them.
